SPAULDING JAMES (SA-FL)

Indianapolis, Indiana. 30/7/1937.

Altosassofonista dalla sonorità molto calda tale da avvicinarsi molto al timbro del sax tenore. Figlio del chitarrista Jimmy, ha compiuto gli studi al Cosmopolitan School di Chicago, ha iniziato a lavorare nell’ambito regionale dal 1930 al 1940, facendo parte della prima orchestra regionale dell’Indiana, la “Bobcats Orchestra”. Ha studiato il sassofono C-melody, il clarino ed il flauto ed ha debuttato in gruppi locali di rhythm-and-blues e, durante il servizio militare, ha diretto la banda del corpo ed ha fatto parte del gruppo di Freddy Hubbard e Larry Ridley i “Jazz Contemporaries” di passaggio a Indianapolis. Entrato a far parte dell’esoterico Sun Ra in una delle sue leggendarie orchestre. In seguito una breve collaborazione con il gruppo R&B del pianista Sonny Thompson ed il primo gruppo da leader nel 1960. Si è trasferito a New York dove è arrivato il successo, sia al sax alto che al flauto è diventato una dei sideman più richiesti della Blue Note. Ha collaborato con Freddie Hubbard nel 1962, con Horace Silver, con i Jazz Messengers, Wayne Shorter, Larry Young, Joe Henderson, Stanley Turrentine, Duke Pearson e, non a caso, con diversi musicisti che privilegiano la matrice africana del jazz come Randy Weston nel 1965 e con Max Roach, con il quale ha partecipato alle sedute di incisione dell’album “Drums Unlimited” del 1961. Negli anni ’70 ed ’80 ha inciso con Archie Shepp, Ricky Ford, Charles Tolliver, Bobby Hutcherson e Alvin Queen. Nel 1966 sempre per la Blue Note con un suo gruppo ha registrato uno splendido omaggio a Duke Ellington ed a Thelonious Monk. Ha registrato con Alvin Queen nel 1981. Improvvisatore sinuoso e pieno d’immaginazione. Come flautista forse è uno dei migliori per la precisione secca degli attacchi. La sua fama non è adeguata al suo valore nonostante che, flautisti di diverse generazioni, lo abbiano assunto come punto di riferimento. Recentemente, a conferma delle sue capacità, è stato riscoperto da David Murray che lo ha impiegato prima nella sua esplosiva big band e poi nel gruppo “World Saxophone Quartet”. Solista a volte ispiratosi a Eric Dolphy ed al calore di Charles McPherson. Negli anni successivi è diventato un punto di riferimento nel free jazz.

Ha iniziato a studiare il sassofono a 16 anni, ha frequentato il Southgate Technical College dal 1975 al 1977 e il Trinity College of Music dal 1977 sino al 1981. Ha studiato in Canada con Steve Coleman. Ha debuttato con l’ottetto di John Williams, ha fondato il gruppo “Itchy Fingers” che nel 1986 è stato premiato a Londra. Ha suonato poi con John Warren, nel Jazz Train di Simon Purcell, con Julian Arguelles e John Mullen dal 1986 al 1987. Ha fatto parte del trio con il bassista Ronan Guilfoyle e Steve Arguellese e nel 1988 ha guidato un suo gruppo. Ha collaborato con Paul Motian, e con Bob Stebson e Mick Hutton ha girato il Regno Unito. Ha fatto una tournée in Europa ed in Africa ed ha registrato diversi album. Nel 1988 ha lasciato il gruppo per formarne un altro con il chitarrista John Parricelli, il bassista Steve Watts ed il batterista Steve Arguelles. Ha suonato in duo con il chitarrista Phil Lee, con gli indiani Dharambir Singh e Sarvar Sabri oltre ad altri sei elementi. Ha insegnato alla Royal Accademy of Music di Londra ed alla Middlesex University ed ha suonato con Loose Tubes, Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, Django Bates, Ashley Slater, Billy Jenkins e registrato con Phil Lee, Stan Tracey, Don Weller.

Figlio di un cantante di opera a 11 anni si è trasferito con la madre a Concord in California ed ha ricevuto le prime lezioni di pianoforte, clarino e violino classico dal patrigno. Ha iniziato ad interessarsi di jazz frequentando la Colorado State University e nel 1967 ha studiato al San Jose State College. In seguito è andato a Berkeley dove ha studiato con Charles Tyler, Raafael Garrett, Frank Wright e Cecil Taylor. Ha suonato con Donadl Garrett, Sonny Simmons, Prince Lasha, Frank Lowe, Bert Wilson e con l’East Bay Jazz Enseble. Ha codiretto un gruppo con Tyler e Butch Morris con il quale ha lavorato anche a Los Angeles. Negli anni ’70 ha vissuto a Parigi dove ha diretto il gruppo “Emergency”e a Rotherdam dove ha collaborato con la “Dutch Jazz Society”e con la “Sunshine Creative Orchestra” di Han Bennink. Nel 1976 in Germania, Francia e Olanda con il “Sea Ensemble”. Tornato a New York nel 1978 ha lavorato e studiato con Raphe Malik, all’inizio degli anni ’80 con la grande orchestra di Cecil Taylor al “Lush Life”, poi con l’Unit e nella Dance Orchestra. Dal 1984 vive a Oakland dove ha registrato con William Parker e Paul Murphy nel “Trio Hurricane”. Ha un gruppo il “Double Trio”con Ben Lindgren e Donald Robinson. Ha fatto parte del New York Free Jazz Quintet, nel 1992 con il quartetto di Lisle Ellis, nel 1994 in trio con Paul Plimey e Ellis, nel 1994 ha formato il gruppo “G-Force”. Ha registrato e diretto nel dicembre del 1995 “Ascention” di John Coltrane alla San Francisco Great Ameruica Music Hall. Ha anche collaborato nel gruppo ROVA, con i quali spesso ha registrato con la Black Saint di Milano. Ha diretto il ROVA nel 1997 al Festival di Bergamo, nella rilettura del brano “Ascension” di Coltrane.

Monroe, Louisiana. 23/10/1892. – St.Louis, Missouri. 2/1/1973.

E’ arrivata la notorietà nel 1929 con l’incisione di “The Dirty Dozen”. Si è esibito in molti locali, nei gruppi più disparati, dai medicine show al jazz, dal blues al vaudeville, ha inciso con molte case discografiche sino al 1960 quando per un grave male ha dovuto lasciare l’attività. Pianista di barelhouse, vivace e spassoso, dal repertorio pieno di doppi sensi e frasi maliziose esposte con voce ironica e graffiante.

Seattle, Washington. 12/2/1967.

Ha studiato clarinetto e pianoforte classico e nel 1986 ha iniziato a studiare anche il sassofono tenore. Ha frequentato il New England Conservatory a Boston e ha debuttato nel gruppo “Human Feel”. Nel 1992 si è trasferito a New York dove ha formato il gruppo “Pachora” con Brad Shepik, ha suonato con Tim Berne, con il sestetto e con l’ottetto “Sanctuary”di Dave Douglas, con Myra Melford, Sam Rivers e nel 1994 con il gruppo “Twice and Erick Friedlander’s Chimera. Ha collaborato anche con John Zorn, Mark Dresser, Ben Perowsky e John Hollembeck. Al Knitting Factory nel febbraio del 1995 ha presentato la sua “Un-Big Band Suite”in tributo di Albert Ayler. Ha suonato con Anthony Coleman, con il quale ha partecipato al Tampere Jazz Appening in Finlandia nel 1998. Ha guidato nel 1997 il quartetto “Yeah,No”. Il mondo musicale di Speed è espresso in modo stralunato ed ipnotico. Nella sua musica vi sono echi della musica klezmer che di per stessa ha un potere stordente e coinvolgente nei confronti dell’ascoltatore. Volendo trovare un suo punto di riferimento si è portati a pensare alla musica di Ornette Coleman. Anche considerandolo un musicista di avanguardia nella sua musica vi sono molti riferimenti al linguaggio della tradizione. Ha suonato con Dave Douglas, con Michael Formanek.

SPELLMAN BENNETT ALFRED JR.

Elizabeth City, North Carolina. 12/8/1935.

Poeta, giornalista e saggista, personaggio molto importante nella cultura afroamericana. Dopo essersi laureato in Scienze Politiche nel 1956 ad Howard, si è subito distinto per la sagacia e la intensità dei sui saggi sul rapporto tra arte e società e per le raccolte poetiche. Nel 1959 si è interessato del jazz, scrivendo per il Down beat e per il Metronome. Ha pubblicato una biografia critica su Art Tatum e nel 1966 il “For Lives In The Bebop Bussiness”, in seguito riedito con il titolo “Four Jazz Lives” (University Of Michigan Press) volume di grande rilievo storico sociale. In esso sono raccontate le vicende umane di quattro giganti del jazz: Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Nichols e Jackie McLean. Nel 1972 ha insegnato ad Harvard sul fenomeno degli afroamericani, Nel 1975 è entrato come consigliere nel National Endowment for the Arts e nel 1978 è stato nominato direttore del Expansion Program. In seguito si è ritirato da ogni carica per dedicarsi al sua vero amore: la scrittura.

Direttore d’orchestra quasi sconosciuto, perlomeno molto meno famoso di Boyd Raeburn e di Stan Kenton, nonostante sia stato lui il primo ad aver suonato con il suo complesso del jazz progressivo.

SPENCER O’NEIL, WILLIAM (DR)

Cedarville, Ohio. 25/11/1909. – New York 24/7/44.

Dopo aver lavorato in piccoli gruppi locali è andato a Buffalo, New York, dove ha suonato con Al Sears nel 1930. Dal 1931 al 1937 ha fatto parte della “Mills Blue Rhythm Band”, poi ha suonato con Lucky Millinder e con John Kirby dal 1937 al 1943. Ammalatosi di tubercolosi nel 1941 ha dovuto rallentare il lavoro e quindi abbandonarlo. Usava suonare quasi in piedi, seduto su di uno sgabello da bar e riesce difficile immaginare come avesse potuto azionare in quella posizione i pedali.

 

SPENDEL CHRISTOPH, JOSEF (P-KEYB)

Butom, Polonia. 19/7/1955.

Ha ricevuto le prime lezioni di musica a cinque anni. Nel 1963 si è trasferito in Germania, dove ha frequentato l’Istituto Robert Shumann di Dusseldorf e la Folkwang Hochschule di Essen. Ha iniziato la carriera con il gruppo “Jazztrack” del quale ha fatto parte dal 1975 al 1979, poi con il chitarrista Toto Blanke ed in duo con Wolfgang Schluter. Dal 1983 è stato attivo principalmente alla testa di una sua orchestra, partecipando ai maggiori jazz festival europei, dove ha anche accompagnato: Albert Mangelsdorff, Christof Louer e Wolfgang Dauner. Ha registrato insieme a molti musicisti americani come: il sassofonista Bill Evans, Jeremy Steig, Steve Gadd, Bob Mintzer, Lonnie Plaxico, Jim Pepper e Michal Urbaniak. Negli anni ’80 ha fatto parte del popolare gruppo “Special EFX” a New York. Nel 1990 la sua musica ha avuto una svolta da acustica ad elettrica e appunto nel 1997 ha fondato l’”Electric Band” ed ha suonato in duo con Michael Sagmeister. Ha anche insegnato alla Musikhoschule di Francoforte sul Meno.

SPERLING JACK, JOHN JR. (DR)

Trenton, New Jersey. 17/8/1922.

A quattro anni ha studiato il violino ed in seguito la batteria da autodidatta. A quindici ha iniziato la professione e nel giugno del 1941 è entrato nell’orchestra di Bunny Berigan. E’ arrivato a New York dove si è impegnato nello studio della batteria. Durante il servizio militare dal 1942 al 1946 ha suonato nella banda della marina militare, anche sotto la direzione di Tex Beneke che aveva assunto la direzione dell’orchestra di Glenn Miller alla sua scomparsa. Dal 1949 al 1954 ha suonato con Les Brown ed è apparso allo show televisivo di Bob Crosby. Ha lavorato con Eddie Miller, nell’ottetto di Dave Pell e con Henry Mancini nello show televisivo “Peter Gunn”e “Mr.Lucky”. Ha lavorato negli studi a Los Angeles e dal 1959 al 1972 ha fatto parte della dirigenza della NBC. Ha collaborato con Pete Fountain, Benny Goodman, Charlie Barnett, Bob Florence ed altri. Grande estimatore e imitatore di Gene Krupa. Classico batterista di stile mainstream.

Gruppo bop nato nel 1990, che ha ricalcato il gruppo che negli anni’80 era diretto da Charlie Rouse. Gli altri componenti del gruppo sono gli stessi, Kenny Barron, Buster Williams e Ben Riley. Al posto di Rouse c’è Gary Bartz che si è ben integrato nel contesto.

SPIKES BENJAMIN, “REB”, FRANKLYN (COMP)

Dallas, Texas. 31/10/1888. – Los Angeles, California. 24/2/1982.

Compositore, sassofonista, autore ed editore a Los Angeles, è rimasto famoso soprattutto per aver composto insieme al fratello John il motivo “Someday Sweetheart” diventato uno standard di jazz. Nato in una famiglia di origini molto varie, tra gli avi aveva irlandesi, francesi, norvegesi e nativi americani. Nel 1987 con la famiglia si è trasferito a Los Angeles dove ha lavorato in un cantiere edile, prima di trasferirsi a San Francisco nel 1907. Soprannominato “Rebel” accorciato in “Reb”. Attirato in un primo tempo dalla pittura, decise per la musica, imparò a suonare vari strumenti e nel 1914 a San Francisco è entrato nell’orchestra di Sidney Leprotti come sassofonista baritono. Nel 1919 a Los Angeles ha aperto con il fratello John un negozio di musica ed in seguito una loro casa discografica. E’ stato anche impresario nel 1930 di Les Hite e di Lionel Hampton.

 

SPIKES BROTHERS.

I fratelli Benjamin “Reb” Spikes e Johnny (John Curry) Spikes, sono stati attivi per oltre mezzo secolo, ottenendo molto successo. La loro dimora fissa è stata Los Angeles, dove hanno gestito dei negozi musicali, dei nightclub ed una casa editrice, con la quale hanno lanciato diversi motivi di successo, oltre a dirigere i ”Majors And Minors”, gruppo nel quale hanno avuto come cantante Ivie Anderson e si sono esibiti sul palcoscenico del “Follies Theater” di Main Street. Nel 1922 sono stati i primi a registrare dischi di gruppi neri. Nel 1924 hanno scritto un dramma per Eddie ”Rochester” Anderson e nel 1927 hanno composto una colonna sonora per un cortometraggio. Gradatamente hanno abbandonato l’attività, poiché John è diventato cieco e Reb anch’egli malato, è diventato agente immobiliare.

 

SPIKES’SEVEN PODS OF PEPPER ORCHESTRA.

Il vero nome del gruppo di Kid Ory, nelle incisioni fatte a Los Angeles nel 1922. Sono stati i primi dischi prodotti in questa zona degli Stati Uniti da una orchestra di neri di New Orleans.

 

SPINA VITTORIO (BJ-G)

Nizza, Francia. 25/4/1905.

Nel 1912 è arrivato con la famiglia a Roma, dove ha cominciato a lavorare come mandolinista in vari circoli della capitale e ha debuttato come professionista nel 1924 con Amedeo Escobar. Ha suonato con Johnny Russell, nel 1930 con Sesto Carlini, nel 1935 ha diretto un’orchestra a Roma insieme al trombonista Ben Pickering. Ha suonato a Roma alle Grotte del Piccione con il trombonista Frank Whiters. Dopo la guerra ha collaborato con il violinista Benedetto Ciopettini. Ha preso parte nel 1962 alla trasmissione televisiva “Tempo di Jazz”. E’ stato uno dei pionieri del jazz italiano.

Giovane musicista di jazz, pianista dotato tecnicamente e dalla tecnica delicata a volte intimistica. Nel 1979 si è esibito per la prima volta in un concerto. Nel 1982 è entrato nell’orchestra della Rai diretta da Bruno Tommaso. Nel 1984 ha ricevuto il premio internazionale come miglior giovane musicista e ha vinto il TOP Jazz 1992 della rivista Musica Jazz come nuovo talento. Ha collaborato con Paolo Fresu, Flavio Boltro, Franco Cerri, Enrico Rava, Ray Mantilla, Irio DePaula, Tiziana Ghiglioni, Elliot Zigmund ed altri. Nel 1992 ha pubblicato il suo primo disco “Mediterranea Suite”. Entra a pieno diritto nel gruppo dei nostri migliori pianisti.

Kiev, Ucraina. 17/2/1907. – Greenville, South Carolina. 1/3/1982.

E’ arrivato bambino negli Stati Uniti ed è cresciuto a New Heaven nel Connecticut. A dieci anni ha iniziato a studiare la tromba alla Hill House High School che ha suonato nella banda della scuola. Dal 1924 al 1931 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra da ballo del violinista Paul Specht. Ha suonato nel 1931 con Ben Pollack, poi con i Dorsey Brothers nel 1935, con Ray Noble, Glen Miller, Bob Crosby, con Jack Teagarden nel 1939. Nello stesso anno con l’aiuto di Glenn Miller ha messo su una sua orchestra. Non avendo eccessiva fortuna ha dovuto sciogliere l’orchestra e nel 1941 ha suonato con Dave Tough. Ha rilevato l’orchestra di Bill Downer ed è arrivato anche il successo. Ha partecipato a diversi film sino al 1959 epoca nella quale l’orchestra si è sciolta. Si è stabito a Las Vegas dove, dopo un periodo di silenzio per una grave malattia, ha ripreso a dirigere delle orchestre. Nel 1973 è stato alla guida della “Ye Olde Fireplace”. Tromba dalla notevole tecnica e dalla voce splendida. Le sue orchestre hanno interpretato perfettamente lo stile sweet.

SPIVEY VICTORIA, REGINA (P-VC)

Houston, Texas. 15/10/1906. – New York. 3/10/1976.

Il successo pieno è arrivato a 16 anni sull’onda di una sua composizione “Black Snake Moan”. Diventa una artista sicura ed una abile manager. Nelle sue registrazioni si circonda di ottimi musucisti di jazz, come Henry Red Allen, Louis Armstrong, Lonnie Johnson e Tampa Red. Sposata al ballerino Billy Adams si esibisce con lui in vari spettacoli. Ha fondato la sua casa discografica la “Spivey”, nella quale hanno inciso grossi bluesmen, ottime cantanti affermate e nuovi talenti. Nel 1950 si è dedicata ad amministrare una comunità religiosa. Ha portato avanti il messaggio del blues classico di Bessie Smith e per più di mezzo secolo è stata un personaggio di spicco della scena del blues. Cantante dalla voce chiara, dallo stile aggressivo e pungente, dal vibrato sottile, lamentoso. Dope Head Blues, Murder In The First Degre, Black Belt, Brooklyn Bridge ed altri sono i suoi capolavori, nei quali ha narrato in modo amaro e distaccato storie di suicidi, di emarginazione, di violenza e di droga.

Nel 1961 ha fatto le sue prime esperienze nel jazz. Nel 1965 ha partecipato ai primi concerti con Cicci Santucci, Enzo Scoppa e Romano Mussolini. Dal 1968 insieme a Mussolini ed a Marcello Rosa ha accompagnato Tony Scott, Henguel Lualdi, Larry Nocella, Sal Genovese e Glauco Masetti. Entrato nel gruppo di Carlo Loffredo, nel 1977 ha insegnato al Centro Jazz St.Louis di Roma. Ha suonato freelance con Harry Edison, Eddie Davis, Bud Freeman, Toots Thielemans, Eddie Miller, Kai Winding. Ha fatto parte del trio di Amedeo Tommasi, ha collaborato anche con Buck Clayton, Attila Zoller e Valeri Ponomarev.

 

SPLASC (H)

Compagnia discografica ed etichetta italiana, fondata nel 1982 come società cooperativa, il cui presidente e direttore è stato Peppe Spagnoli. Sino al 1999 ha registrato solo jazz italiano, offrendo un vasto panorama del jazz nazionale. In seguito ha anche offerto incisioni di musicisti americani e ha avuto anche il pregio di ristampare una serie di 500 registrazione del jazz italiano di avanguardia.

 

SPOERRI BRUNO (ST)

Zurigo, Svizzera. 16/8/1935.

Dopo aver studiato psicologia ed iniziato a comporre musiche per film, si è specializzato dal 1965 in musica elettronica. Nel 1952 ha messo su il suo primo gruppo, nel 1956 ha suonato con Francis Notz, poi è entrato nel “Modern Jazz Group” e poi nel “Metronome Quintet” sino al 1975. Nel 1960 ha organizzato una grande orchestra. In seguito ha suonato nel “Jazz Rock Ensemble” di Hans Kennell, nel 1974 ha guidato i “Jazz Containers”. Ha lavorato anche per l’orchestra di Radio Zurigo. Ha prodotto molto come arrangiatore e compositore, nella musica per colonne sonore di film ha ottenuto diversi premi ed in seguito si è interessato di musica elettronica.

Musicista affermatosi come uno dei migliori pianisti italiani di scuola tradizionale. Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte classico a nove anni e nel 1996 si è diplomato al Conservatorio. A 16 anni ha iniziato a suonare nei locali di Milano e nel 1992 è balzato alla ribalta con la “Milano Jazz Gang”, con la quale ha fatto diversi tour. Nel 2000 ha incontrato il leggendario pianista jazz ed educatore Barry Harris di cui è diventato buon amico e mentore. Ha partecipato a numerosi festival anche oltre oceano. Importante club di New York, sito a Manhattan nella 52a strada, aperto nel 1944 dove si sono esibiti Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins e Billie Holoday. E’ stato chiuso nel dicembre del 1946.

 

SPOTLITE.

Compagnia discografica ed etichetta fondata da Tony Williams nel 1968, da non confondersi con il celebre batterista. La sua prima sede è stata a Londra e nel 1974 si è trasferita a Sawbridgeworth nell’Hertfordshire. Ha pubblicato più di cento LP e con l’avvento del CD si è concentrata a produrre dischi di musicisti inglesi.

Nel 1938 si è diplomato in pianoforte e composizione nel locale Conservatorio. Nel 1945 è arrivato a Milano, ha preso contatto con il jazz e nel 1948 ha partecipato al Festival Nazionale del Jazz di Firenze con Armando Pareto (tp) Sandro Bagalini (st) Carlo Loffredo (b) e Gino Parodi (dr). Nel 1949 ha inciso con Gil Cuppini, nel 1950 con Piero Rizza, ha suonato in duo con Gorni Kramer. In seguito si è dedicato completamente all’arrangiamento, alla composizione ed a esibizioni di piano solo.

 

SPRAGUE PETER, TRIPP (G)

Cleveland, Ohio. 11/10/1955.

Ha vissuto l’infanzia in Colorado e a otto anni con la famiglia si è trasferito nella cittadina di Del Mar, vicino San Diego in California. A dodici anni ha iniziato a studiare la chitarra, ha seguito dei regolari corsi a Boston sotto l’insegnamento di Pat Metheny, nel 1976, e di chitarra classica presso il New England Conservatory Of Music con Yoshiaki Masuo. Ha fondato la Dance of the Universe Orchestra a San Diego, ha suonato con Bob Mover a Montreal e a New York. Tornato a San Diego, ha suonato con Charles McPerson, in seguito ha suonato con Eddie Harris, con Art Pepper, con Tommy Flanagan e con Kenny Barron e occasionalmente con Chick Corea. Ha registrato freelance con la GRP All Stars Big Band nel 1992, con David Benoit, con Bill Childs. Nel 1988 ha insegnato al Musicians Institute di Los Angeles. Chitarrista preparato, molto dotato tecnicamente ed in possesso di una particolare sensibilità, si è posto all’attenzione agli inizi degli anni ’80. Strumentista entro la tradizione più pura, quella cioè che fa capo a Charlie Christian. A volte non disdegna delle visitazioni con i suoni ed i ritmi sudamericani, o a duetti classicheggianti.

Ha iniziato a studiare la batteria a sei anni da solo ed in seguito ha studiato con Philly Jo Jones. Ha iniziato la carriera a Londra da freelance con Stan Tracey, con il quale ha suonato e registrato dal 1965 al 1977. Ha anche registrato nello stesso periodo con Frank Ricotti, con John Williams, con Joe Harriott, con Tubby Hayes, ha fatto parte della “Passport” di Klaus Doldinger, della “Bebop Preservation Society” , dei “Nucleus” di Ian Carr, il “Centipede” di Keith Tippett. E’ andato in tournée con Hanniball Peterson, nel 1992 con il quintetto di Alan Skidmore ed a diretto un suo gruppo.

 

SPRINGER JOE, JOSEPH (P)

New York. 22/5/1916. – Florida. Dic.1985.

Ha iniziato la carriera professionalmente nel 1931 a Cony Island, New York. Nel 1935 ha lavorato con Wingy Manone e nel 1940 ha suonato alla Hickory House con Louis Prima e ha fatto il suo debutto discografico. Ha suonato e registrato con Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Oscar Pettiford, Tiny Grimes, Ben Webster, Charlie Barnett, Jimmy McPartland e nella metà degli anni ’40 ha accompagnato regolarmente Billie Holiday. Dopo un breve ritorno con Rich, dal 1960 ha lavorato freelance a New York e poi in Florida.

 

SPRINGHER MAX (VIOL)

Alessandria, Egitto. 6/7/1910.

Di origini rumene da parte di padre e di madre italiana, ha compiuto gli studi musicali ad Alessandria d’Egitto e dal 1925 ha frequentato il Conservatorio di Parigi. Trasferitosi a Milano per diversi anni ha suonato con celebri orchestre da ballo ed ha iniziato ad interessarsi di jazz dal 1930. Ha suonato alla Capannina di Forte dei Marmi e con una sua orchestra al Casino di San Remo. Nel 1940 ha inciso i suoi primi dischi, nel 1946 ha inciso con Giampiero Boneschi e nel 1957 ha messo su un gruppo con Franco e Berto Pisano e Libero Tosoni sul modello dell’Hot Club de France.

Ha studiato privatamente musica e dopo il servizio militare nel 1925 ha suonato con Coleman Hawkins, dal 1952 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra che si esibiva al “French Poodle” di Chicago. Ha suonato in seguito con Ira Sullivan, nel 1954 è entrato nell’organico della Bee Hive e qui ha avuto modo di suonare insieme a Lester Young, Charlie Parker e Sonny Stitt. Dal 1959 in gruppo con Johnny Griffin e Eddie Davis, poi con Norman Simmons, ha accompagnato Carmen McRae dal 1962 al 1964, con Buddy De Franco nel 1964, nel 1965 è entrato nei Jazz Messengers di Art Blakey, con il quali ha fatto un tour in Europa, in Giappone ed ha preso parte ad una puntata della serie televisiva “Jazz 625” della BBC. Dal 1969 è stato il bassista fisso al Half Note di New York e qui ha suonato con Al Cohn , Zoot Sims, Anita O’Day, Jimmy Rushing, James Moody. Ha registrato con Lee Konitz, Andrew Hill, lavorato con Hazel Scott, con Clark Terry si è esibito all’Expo di Montreal e nel 1975 ha fatto una tournée europea. Ha inciso anche con Johnny Hartman, Wardell Gray, Lee Morgan, Sun Ra.

 

SPYRO GYRA.

Gruppo di jazz-rock messo su a Buffalo nel 1974 su iniziativa del sassofonista Jay Beckenstein e del pianista Jeremy Wall. Nel 1981 il sestetto era composto oltre che da Bechenstein e Wall, da Tom Shuman (tast) Chet Catallo (g) David Wolford (b) e Eli Konikoff (dr). Nel corso degli anni è diventato un settetto composto da Beckenstein, Shuman, Dave Samuel (vib)Julio Fernandez (g)Roberto Vally (b)Richie Morales (dr)Manolo Badrena (per). In seguito spesso è diventata una vera big band con l’aggiunta di molti ospiti.

Orchestra inglese da ballo fondata nel 1940. E’ stata la più importante orchestra della RAF, composta dai migliori musicisti inglesi delle orchestre da ballo dell’epoca. E’ stata diretta dal pianista Ronnie Aldrich. Finita la guerra nel 1947 ha continuato ad essere attiva, come una normale orchestra fino al suo scioglimento avvenuto nel 1964.

 

SQUIRES BRUCE, “WILLMARTH” (TB)

Berkeley, California. 2/1/1910. – North Hollywood, California. 8/5/1981.

Ha iniziato a lavorare all’inizio degli anni ’30 e dal maggio del 1935 al febbraio del 1937 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Ben Pollack, con il quale ha anche registrato. In seguito ha suonato con Jimmy Dorsey dal febbraio del 1937 al gennaio del 1938, con Gene Krupa dal gennaio 1938 al marzo del 1939, poi con Benny Goodman, con Harry James, dal 1940 al 1941 con Freddie Slack e nell’estate del 1942 con Bob Crosby. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale ha continuato ad essere attivo negli studi sino alla fine del 1970 epoca nella quale si è ritirato dall’attività.

 

STABENOW THOMAS (B)

Kirchberg, Germania. 11/9/1952.

Ha studiato alla Musikhochschule di Stoccarda dal 1975 al 1980 e ha debuttato nel “Ulmer Jazz Quintet” nel dicembre del 1976. Ha registrato con Emil Mangelsdorff, con Heinz Schonberger, con il trio di Klaus Doldinger nel 1978, con Frederic Rabold nel 1979, con Bernd Konrad, con Lauren Newton e la “Human Music Association”nel 1980. Ha guidato un suo gruppo, poi lo “Straight Four” e ha fondato una sua etichetta e compagnia discografica la Bassic-Sound. Ha suonato con Peter Herbolzheimer, con Roman Schwaller, con Klaus Weiss, con Rob van Bavel, con il “Saxophone Connection” e alla fine del 1980 ha fondato il gruppo cooperativo, il ”Trio Concept” con il pianista Klaus Wagenleiter ed il batterista Harald Ruschembaukm. Agli inizi degli anni ’90 ha suonato con Wolfgang Hafner e freelance con Johnny Griffin, Ack van Rooyen, Toots Thielemenas, Albert Mangelsdorff, Charlie Antoliny, Stan Getz, Charlie Mariano, David Friedman, Dianne Reeves, Al Porcino, Joe Haider, la WDR Band e la SDR big band. Ha registrato con il pianista Joe Keineman, il “Sudpool Jazz Project”, con i sassofonisti Harvey Wainapel e Jurgen Seefelder, con la cantante Rachel Gould, con Franz Weyerer, con Larry Porter, con Florian Poser, con i violinisti Hajo Hoffman e Jorg Widmoser, con il batterista Joe Baudisch, con Frank Foster, con Johannes Enders, Till Martin, con il quintetto del trombettista Ingolf Burkhardt e il trombonista Ludwig Nuss. Ha insegnato alla Musikhochschule di Stoccarda nel 1984 ed in quella di Mannheim nel 1996.

Cambridge, Maryland. 1890. – New York. 1955.

Eredita dal padre la passione per la musica e la tuba, debutta però alla cornetta nella Merry Concert Band. Passato alla tuba a New York suona con Wibur De Paris, i Bobby Lee’sCotton Pickers, dal 1926 al 31 è con Charlie Johnson, i Cozy Cole’s Hot Cinders (1931) e sino al 1941 registra con Clarence Williams, lavora alla radio e sino alla fine lavora come impiegato alla Columbia University.

 

ST. CYR JOHNNY, JOHN ALEXANDER (BJ)

New Orleans, Louisiana. 17/4/1890. – Los Angeles, California. 17/6/1966.

Figlio di musicisti, sin da giovanissimo ha imparato a suonare la chitarra. Ha lavorato come intonacatore di giorno e di notte suonava. Ha iniziato la carriera con Papa Celestin, poi ha suonato con Armand Piron nel 1909, con Martin Gabriel nel 1913, con Kid Ory, con Fate Marable sui riverboat nel 1917, avendo come compagni Armstrong e Johnny Dodds, Ed Allen e Charlie Creath. Tornato a New Orleans ha suonato con Manuel Perez. E’ andato poi a Chicago nel 1923 dove ha suonato con King Oliver, poi con Jimmy Noone, con Doc Cook dal 1925 al 1929. Ha partecipato alle famose incisioni degli Hot Five e Hot Seven di Armstrong e ha fatto parte dei Red Hot Pepper di Jelly Roll Morton. Nel 1929 è tornato a New Orleans dove ha suonato raramente. Nel 1954 è ricomparso alla ribalta con Paul Barbarin, poi con la “New Orleans Creole Jazz Band” nel 1959 e i “The Young Men Of New Orleans” nel 1960. In seguito ad un incidente automobilistico ha dovuto quasi smettere l’attività. E’ rimasto il primo suonatore di banjo di valore della storia del Jazz. E’ stato premiato con l’All Time All Star Award.

 

STABILE DICK, RICHARD (LEAD)

Newark, New Jersey. 29/5/1909. – New Orleans, Louisiana. 25/9/1980.

Musicista di origini italiane. Ha iniziato a suonare nelle orchestre di fossa dei teatri e nel 1928 è stato ingaggiato da Ben Bernie che poi ha lasciato nel 1936, per organizzare una grande orchestra da ballo con la quale ha ottenuto molto successo e nella quale figuravano ottimi musicisti tra i quali Bunny Berigan.

Entrato nel mondo del jazz nel 1954, dopo aver fatto parte di diverse orchestre da ballo molto commerciali, partecipando a concerti ed incisioni nel gruppo di Phil Woods ed ha continuato la sua carriera free lance con John Eardley, Jimmy Raney, Eddie Costa, Friedrick Gulda, George Wallington, Gil Evans, Mose Allison, Carmen McRae, Don Elliott, Bob Brookmeyer, Urbie Green, nel 1964 all’Half Note al fianco di Lennie Tristano, Chet Baker, Kenny Drew, Bill Evans, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims. Ha inciso anche con l’Australian Jazz Quintet. Nel 1973 la sua carriera e la sua vita è stata interrotta prematuramente in un incidente stradale.

 

STACY JESS, ALEXANDRIA (P)

Cape Girardeau, Missouri. 11/8/1904. – Los Angeles, California. 1/1/1995.

A dieci anni ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte ad orecchio. Il suo primo impegno è stato sui battelli del Mississippi, con i gruppi di Harvey Berry e di Tony Catalano nel 1920 . Nel 1926 si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha fatto parte della “Midway Gardens Orchestra”. Ha suonato poi con Joe Kaiser, Frank Teschmacher, Muggsy Spanier, Danny Altier, Floyd Town, Louis Panico, Art Kassel, Eddie Neibauer, Paul Mares, Frank Snyder, Maurice Stein. Nel 1935 è entrato nell’orchestra di Benny Goodman con il quale ha partecipato al celebre concerto alla Carnegie Hall del 1938. Nel 1939 ha collaborato con Bob Crosby, ha inciso con Gene Krupa, Harry James, con Lionel Hampton nel 1937, Eddie Condon, Ziggy Elman, con Bud Freeman nel 1938, George Wettling, con i Metronome All Stars nel 1940, con Horace Heidt nel 1944, Tommy Dorsey, Willy Smith, Jimmy Dorsey, Pee Wee Russell. Dal 1945 si è stabilito a New York dove ha suonato sopratutto in diversi locali alla moda con propri gruppi. Nel 1951 ha suonato con Jack Teagarden, con Billy Butterfield e nel 1974 a capo di una All Stars al Festival di Monterey. Musicista dallo stile nitido e melodico, ha subito come molti suoi colleghi dell’epoca l’influenza di Teddy Wilson, rispetto allo stesso però suona con meno eleganza, poiché spesso scadeva nel banale e nel pomposo. E’ stato un pianista importante dell’epoca delle grandi orchestre swing.

Cresciuto ad Amburgo, ha frequentato il locale conservatorio dove si è diplomato in pianoforte, armonia e composizione. Nel 1965 è emigrato negli Stati Uniti a New York, ha guidato dei gruppi con Thad Jones, Tom McIntosh, John Gilmore, Roger Kellaway e Reggie Johnson. Nel 1966 ha registrato la sua composizione “Fugue 2”, con un sestetto con Jimmy Owens, Joe Farrell, Garnet Brown, Don Friedman, Barre Phillips, Joe Chambers. E’ l’autore della più lunga composizione di jazz che sia stata scritta. Ha composto brani per piano solo e per grandi orchestre. Nel 1967 il New York Jazz Sextet ha interpretato il suo ”No Exercise”, ha scritto per James Moody e nel 1973 ha composto ed inciso ”Love In The Middle Of The Air” per voce e basso con Dee Dee Bridgewater e Reggie Workman. Ha lavorato con Tyrone Washington, con Lenny White nel 1971, con Charles McGhee, con Richard Davis nel 1975. Ha arrangiato temi di grandi del jazz da Parker a Monk. Dal 1979 è scomparso dalla scena del jazz.

Ha suonato con Sam Wooding ad Atlantic City, nel New Jersey. Si è trasferito a New York dove ha accompagnato sua sorella la cantante Mary Stafford, in alcune registrazioni. Nel 1920 è tornato ad Atlantic City dove ha suonato con Charlie Johnson, con il quale è rimasto sino al 1928 epoca della sua morte. Ha suonato poi con Eddie Condon nel 1929 ed ha inciso con Henry Allen nel 1935, con Art Karle e con Milton Mezz Mezzrow. Avrebbe fatto intendere anche di essere il fratello della famosa cantante Jo.

 

STAFFORD GREGG, GREGORY VAUGHAN (TP)

New Orleans, Louisiana. 6/7/1953.

Ha iniziato la professione nel 1974 e nel 1976 si è diplomato insegnante alla Southern University di New Orleans ed ha lavorato nelle scuole del sua città. Ha continuato a suonare ed ha diretto la Young Tuxedo Brass Band nel 1984 e nel 1992 la Heritage Hall Jazz Band con la quale ha sostituito la Kid Sheik Cola alla Preservation Hall. Nel 1990 è andato in tour con Wynton Marsalis per un tributo a Louis Armstrong. Ha collaborato con Danny Barker nei “Jazz Hounds”ed lo ha sostituito alla sua morte alla guida del gruppo. Ha registrato nel 1998 e nel 1999 con il clarinettista inglese Brian Carrick. Ha collaborato spesso con Michael White.

Ha cominciato a farsi conoscere con l’orchestra di Tommy Dorsey, facendo parte di un gruppo vocale i Pied Pipers e avendo come controparte maschile Frank Sinatra. Come Sinatra ha studiato la tecnica di respirazione di Dorsey, per aumentare l’ampiezza vocale con naturalezza. Cantante melodica, dalla naturalezza quasi strumentale, dalla voce elegante e dai toni pacati. Lasciato Dorsey è arrivata al successo, divenendo una delle voci leader del pop americano. Ha avuto una certa, anche se molto circoscritta, apertura al jazz.

Miami, Florida. 25/11/1966.

Cresciuto a Chicago e Silver Spring nel Maryland, ha iniziato ha studiare la tromba a 13 anni, dedicandosi all’inizio alla musica classica. Durante gli studi per conseguire la laurea in educazione musicale alla University of Maryland ha avuto modo di suonare nell’orchestra jazz dell’istituto, coinvolgendosi gradualmente sempre più al jazz. Il trombettista che lo ha maggiormente influenzato è stato Clifford Brown. Nel 1988 su suggerimento di Wynton Marsalis ha iniziato a studiare con il Dr. William Fielder alla Rutgers University. Durante lo stesso periodo è stato invitato da Bobby Watson a unirsi al suo gruppo gli “Horizon”. Nei successivi cinque anni ha intensificato la sua formazione con Victor Lewis e Shirley Scott. Successivamente Stafford è entrato nella “Latin All-Star Band” di McCoy Tyner, ha collaborato inoltre con Steve Turre, Dave Valentin e Jerry Gonzalez. Dalla metà degli anni ‘90 ha fatto parte dei gruppi di Benny Golson, di Frank Wess, della Jimmy Heath Big Band e la Jon Faddis Orchestra. Ha fatto inoltre parte dei gruppi di Cedar Walton, Sadao Watanabe, i Clayton Brothers, Herbie Mann, Kenny Barron e Matt Wilson. E’ anche apparso in televisione, nel “Tonight Show” di Jay Leno e in “You Bet Your Life” con Bill Cosby e ha suonato nella colonna sonora del film “A Bronx Tale”. Si è esibito come ospite del Billy Taylor Trio nella trasmissione della National Public Radio “Billy Taylor’s Jazz at the Kennedy Center”. Attivo anche in campo didattico, è Director of Jazz Studies alla Temple University di Philadelphia, ha tenuto dei seminari presso la prestigiosa Vail Foundation in Colorado e nel programma “Essentially Ellington” del Jazz at Lincoln Center. Precedentemente ha fatto parte del corpo insegnante dell’Institute for Jazz Studies della Juilliard School di New York. Definito da McCoy Tyner “uno dei grandi musicisti dei nostri giorni, un trombettista favoloso”, è noto per le sue doti di versatilità, a cui si combinano lirismo e grande amore per la melodia ed un grande senso di musicalità. Questo suo originale e ben definito talento gli consente di attingere liberamente al ricco patrimonio espressivo della tradizione del suo strumento, riuscendo al tempo stesso a tracciare un proprio percorso.

Dal 1973 al 1975 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Woody Herman, poi con Count Basie dal 1976 al 1980. Nel 1977 ha guidato anche un suo gruppo a Reading, ha fatto parte del gruppo di Sal Nistico nel 1979. Ha anche accompagnato spesso degli artisti pop, tra le quali Liza Minelli. Ha registrato negli studi con il sassofonista Bill Evans, con la Buddy Rich Orchestra nel 1994 in occasione della serata in sua memoria. Ha fatto anche parte della Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
