TIPPETT KEITH (P)

Bristol, Gran Bretagna. 25/8/ 1947 – 14/6/2020.

Ha studiato pianoforte classico dall’età di quattro anni a quella di 18. Ha avuto il primo impegno con il coro di St.Thomas di Martyr Beckett a Bristol. Ha studiato anche organo classico ed ha iniziato a Bristol a suonare jazz tradizionale e bop. Nel 1967 è andato a Londra. Mentre studiava, a Barry nel Galles del sud, ha conosciuto Marc Charig, Nick Evans, Elton Dean, con i quali ha formato un sestetto insieme al bassista Jill Lyons e al batterista Alan Jackson. Tornato a Londra nel 1967 ha messo su una orchestra di 50 elementi la “Centipede”, un insieme di musicisti jazz, rock e classici. Nel 1971 si esibisce in duo con Stan Tracey e nel 1973 ha diretto il trio “Ovary Lodge”. Ha registrato con Howard Riley, Hans Reichel, Trevor Watts, Dudu Pukwana, Peter Brotzmann, Louis Moholo. Ha suonato e registrato con Elton Dean, nella “Dance Orchestra” di John Stevens e nella “Ninesense”. Nel 1974 ha ricostituito la “Centipede”. In seguito ha guidato il “Mujician”, la “Dedication Orchestra”, il “Dreamtime”. In seguito ha preferito lavorare in trio in duo o come solista. Musicista che avrebbe voluto infondere alle sue orchestre il sound ed il carattere di quelle di Gil Evans.

Incoraggiata dal padre, il trombettista Reg Driscol, ha iniziato a esibirsi nei locali di Londra nel 1959 e con una sua orchestra nel 1963. Dal 1964 al 1966 ha fatto parte del gruppo di rhythm-and-blues gli “Steampacket” diretto da Brian Auger e del Brian Auger Trinità. Nel 1968 ha registrato il suo primo disco da leader. Nel 1970 ha sposato Keith Tippett e dal 1970 al 1975 ha collaborato nel Centipede. Spesso si è esibita in duo, scrivendo anche le parole dei brani interpretati. Nel 1976 ha messo su un quartetto vocale, il “Voice”i nsieme a Maggie Nicols, Brian Ely e Phil Minton. Ha lavorato con lo “Spontaneous Music Ensemble”, ha registrato con Carla Bley, con Harry Miller, Derek Bailey, con i Working Week e ha collaborato con il marito in duo ed in trio. Ha registrato un album di poesie con il John Wolf Brennan’s Hextet. Alla fine degli anni ’70 si è mossa nel campo del blues, del rock e nel free. Le sue esibizioni sono risultate sempre perfette per improvvisazione, tecnica ed intensità.

Musicista di jazz statunitense poco conosciuta, anche se la sua è una storia molto particolare. Negli anni trenta per una donna era difficile essere accettata come sassofonista, dopo varie audizioni, finite nel nulla, prese la decisione di vestirsi da uomo e farsi passare per tale; in questo modo potè suonare e vivere di musica. In questo modo ha lavorato sino alla metà degli anni ’70. A lei è stato titolato il Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, gruppo interamente composto da donne.

TIPTONS (THE)

Il Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, è un gruppo nato nel 1989 formato da quattro sassofoniste. Hanno registrato con la Knitting Factory nel 1993 e poi con la New World. Nel corso degli anni l’organico è cambiato, molte sassofoniste sono state sostituite da altre. Le due musiciste fisse del gruppo sono state Amy Denio e Jessica Lurie che hanno anche scritto la maggior parte del repertorio. Il gruppo si è sciolto nel 2000.

Per sei anni è stato il primo clarinetto nell’Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala di Milano. Spinto da curiosità ha voluto provare a suonare anche del jazz e lo ha fatto con molta professionalità e con risultati eccellenti. Musicista dalla grande tecnica, dalla suono puro. Riesce a supplire in qualche modo alla naturale carenza di swing che gli viene dagli studi classici, con molta vitalità e soprattutto molto entusiasmo.

Dal 1969 al 1975 ha lavorato con gruppi di jazz locali, mentre ha frequentato studi classici al Conservatorio di Tolosa. Nel 1977 è andato a Parigi dove è entrato nell’orchestra di Claude Bolling, ha suonato poi con le orchestre: Ornicar, la Gerard Bandini’s Swing Machine, con Jean-Loup Longnon e François Laudet. Nel 1983 ha messo su un gruppo in onore di John Kirby ed un suo album del 1985 ha avuto molto successo. Nel 1988 ha fondato il gruppo “Saxomania”, che nelle registrazioni si è avvalso della collaborazione di Benny Carter, Spike Robinson, Phil Woods, Guy Lafitte e Clarke Terry. Ha debuttato nel 1888 al banjo con gruppi locali e nella metà degli anni ’90. Ha suonato poi con il violinista Cy Anderson, con il quale è arrivato a suonare sino a Louisville nel 1900 e ha girato l’Ohio e il Mississippi. Nel 1909 il gruppo di Anderson si è sciolto e nel 1917 egli è andato con la Wistler’s Jug Band, con la quale ha registrato nel 1924. Dal 1925 ha alternato spesso la chitarra al banjo.

TITTARELLI DANIELE (SA)

Musicista romano, sassofonista hard bop, dal modo di suonare molto personale e fantasioso, dal timbro scuro, forte ed aggressivo. Ha diretto un quartetto molto affiatato e coeso. Ha fatto parte del quartetto di Roberto Gatto, del sestetto di Gianluca Renzi e della PMJO la Parco della Musica Jazz Orchestra.

Pausala, Macerata, Marche, Italia. 1900.

Nel 1917 si diploma in cornetta al Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia, suona nella Banda municipale e nel 1924 entra nella prima orchestra da ballo nata a Roma, i ”Phillips And His Seven Boys”. Suona poi con la “Florida Jazz Band”, a Milano nella “Jazz Columbia”. Ha suonato con Oscar Leman che dirigeva un’orchestra internazionale che accompagnava la celebre Josephine Baker. Ha anche suonato in Svizzera ed in Germania e nel 1944 ha lasciato l’attività.

TIZOL JUAN VINCENTE MARTINEZ. (TB)

San Juan, Portorico. 22/1/1900. – Inglewood, California. 23/4/1984.

Ha iniziato a suonare con l’orchestra municipale di San Juan. E’ emigrato negli Stati Uniti nel 1920 e ha lavorato per un lungo periodo all’Howard Theatre di Washington. Ha suonato poi per breve tempo con Marie Lucas, Bobby Lee e poi con la White Brothers Band. Nel settembre del 1929 è stato ingaggiato da Duke Ellington, che lo aveva ascoltato all’Howard Theatre, con il quale è rimasto sino al 1944. Nell’aprile dello stesso anno ha suonato con Harry James sino al 1951 e nello stesso periodo ha collaborato con Louie Bellson e con Peral Bailey. In seguito è tornato con Ellington dal 1951 alla fine del 1953 e ancora nel 1960 e nel 1961. Si stabilisce in California ed in seguito a Las Vegas. Nel 1953 ha collaborato con Charles Mingus. E’ tornato con Ellington sino al 1970. In seguito si è ritirato dalla scena musicale. Come solista non si è molto messo in evidenza mentre, come compositore, ci ha lasciato degli ottimi brani.

St. Louis. Missouri. 16/7/1925. – Manila, Filippine. 5/5/1982.

Fa parte di una famiglia che lavora nel vaudeville ed ha debuttato a tre anni come ballerino con la madre ed a quattordici ha deciso di studiare la batteria. Prese lezioni di pianoforte dalla madre, si trasferisce sulla West Coast dove la madre aveva aperto una scuola da ballo. Ha suonato la batteria nella orchestrina della scuola, con qualche gruppo dixieland e dal 1943 al 1946 ha fatto il servizio militare in marina. Dal 1946 al 1947 ha studiato al San Josè State College, poi al San Francisco State College, conoscendo Dave Brubeck con il quale ha fatto parte dell’ottetto e del trio dal 1949 al 1951. Ha iniziato a suonare anche il vibrafono e dopo essersi laureato è tornato con Brubeck. Ha guidato un gruppo con Jerome Richardson e Vernon Alley, ha suonato con Alvino Rey. Nel 1951 ha collaborato con il chitarrista Nick Esposito e ha diretto un suo gruppo a San Francisco. Nel 1953 entra nel gruppo di George Shearing, mette su un’orchestra latino-americana molto commerciale, pur continuando a suonare del jazz. Ha collaborato con Carmen McRae, Anita O’Day, Rose Mary Clooney, Stan Getz. E’ morto di morte violenta. Eccellente musicista anche se tendente ad effetti di stile commerciale. E’ stato uno dei primi ad introdurre nel jazz elementi di musica latino-americana. Come vibrafonista aveva un suono molto bello.

Quartetto cooperativo nato nella metà degli anni ’90, formato dal chitarrista elettrico Charlie Hunter, da John Schott, Will Bernard e dal batterista Scott Amendola. Gruppo conosciuto inizialmente come James T.Kirk, ma arrivato negli studi della Paramount è diventato lo”T.J.Kirk” poiché i suoi riferimenti principale sono: T (Thelonious Monk) J (James Brown) e Kirk (Roland) Ha fatto molti tour ed ha registrato diversi dischi ottenendo sempre il favore del pubblico e della critica.

TOBA:THEATRE OWNERS BOOKING AGENCY.

Organizzata da uno dei fratelli Barassi originari di Menphis nel 1907, è riuscita a controllare più di ottanta teatri frequentati da negri. La musica che si suonava era jazz, ma soprattutto blues. Per quanto mal considerata per il trattamento poco umano nei riguardi degli artisti, ha procurato loro sempre lavoro e ha contribuito alla diffusione della loro musica.

TOCA LAWRENCE (TP)

New Orleans, Louisiana. 1900.

Ha debuttato nel 1928 con la “Bill Hamilton’s Oriental Orchestra”. Durante la depressione ha lavorato con Kid Milton e con Paul Barnes. Nel 1942 è entrato nell’orchestra di Emile Barnes, con la quale si è esibito per diversi anni alla ”Harmony Hill” uno dei più famosi cabaret di New Orleans. Nel 1951 ha inciso con la “New Orleans Band” di Emile Barnes e poi ha suonato con George Lewis. Ha suonato con Albert Jiles e Emma Barrett alla ”Happy Landing”. Dal 1955 ha lasciato l’attività.

Borehamwood,Hertfordshire, Gran Bretagna. 6/8/1956.

Ha suonato dal 1973 al 1977 con la “National Youth Jazz Orchestra”, dal 1978 al 1982 con i “Turning Point” di Jeff Clyne. Dal 1982 al 1988 con il gruppo “Nucleus” e dal 1989 al 1992 con Ian Carr. Ha lavorato anche freelance come musicista di rock e nella pop music. Nel 1990 ha fatto parte della “Colin Towns Mask Orchestra”.

TOFFOLETTI GUIDO (G-ARM)

Venezia, Veneto, Italia. 1950.

Cresciuto musicalmente in Inghilterra, dirige un suo gruppo la “Blues Society”, che segue il filone del blues cittadino, in modo ortodosso, libero da compromessi. Nella sua musica vi è l’ombra del rock però molto sbiadito. Come chitarrista dovrebbe avere più coraggio ed essere più presente nell’ambito del gruppo.

TOGASHI MASAHIKO (PER)

Tokyo, Giappone. 22/3/1940. – Giappone. 22/8/2007.

Figlio di un bassista, egli ha iniziato a studiare il violino a sei anni e a 14 anni ha esordito nella orchestra da ballo del padre. Ha iniziato ad interessarsi di jazz, ha fatto parte del gruppo di Sadao Watanabe, nel 1956 del Cozy Quartet, ha suonato con Toshiko Akiyoshi e con Tony Scott. Nel 1961 ha messo su il suo gruppo il “Jazz Accademy”. Nel 1965 sarà il primo gruppo giapponese di free jazz, accompagnando vari solisti americani di passaggio, come Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Lee Morgan e Blue Mitchell. Un incidente nel 1969 non gli permette più di suonare la batteria e quindi ha iniziato a suonare le percussioni. Ha scritto delle composizioni per gli show. Nella metà degli anni ’70 ha ripreso a suonare la batteria e a fatto dei tour, registrando con Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Masahiko Sato, Yuji Takahashi, Steve Lacy, Gary Peacock, Helen Merrill ed altri. Nel 1988 ha guidato un trio con Lacy e DeJohnette, nel 1990 il gruppo “J.J.Spirit” e con Paul Bley nel 1999. Suona musica spirituale, nel quale sono presenti elementi della religione zen. Dal 1970 suonava su di una speciale sedia a rotelle essendo paralizzato in seguito ad un incidente.

TOGNOLI LUIGI (ANCIE)

Sassofonista molto considerato nel jazz italiano, molto competente armonicamente. Biologo e musicista perfezionista in tutte due le attività. Uomo schivo e discreto non compare spesso nelle cronache musicali e, per diverso tempo, non ha nemmeno inciso. Sassofonista che si ispira a Brecker, versatile, di una originalità concreta, accompagnata da un gusto raffinato e senza artificiosità.

Si è trasferito con la famiglia a Lincolntown nel North Carolina e ha frequentato la Johnson C.Smith University di Charlotte. Nel 1929 ha debuttato con la Taylor’s Dixie Serenade di Dave Taylor e nel 1931 ha fatto anche il suo debutto discografico. Nel 1934 è andato a New York, dove ha suonato con Charlie Alexander al “Glens Fall” e poi con l’orchestra del Savoy Ballroom. Nel 1936 ha suonato con Fats Waller, con il gruppo di Snud Mosley al Black Cat, con la stesso gruppo diretto da lui al Cafè Creole nel 1938 e nel 1939 al Platation Club, anno nel quale ha registrato con i suoi Tolbert’s Gentlemen of Swing. Nel 1940 ha suonato con Otis Hicks, con Red Richards. Ha continuato ad esibirsi con i suoi gruppi nei club dell’area di New York. Nel 1946 ha conseguito un master alla Columbia University ed è tornato a Charlotte dove ha fatto il supervisore alle scuole superiori, nel 1948 alla Southern University di Houston ed è stato attivo alla Federazione dei Musicisti Americani.

Dal 1970 ha fatto parte di diversi gruppi a Sverdlovsk in Ucraina, mentre completa gli studi al Sverdlovsk Music College. Ha iniziato ha entrare ufficialmente nel jazz nel gruppo del pianista Vladimir Lukachev nel 1972. Dal 1973 al 1975 ha lavorato in una orchestra da ballo a Ural e nel 1975 si è trasferito a Novosibirsk per studiare il sassofono alla Novosibirsk State Philarmony. Ha messo su il Musical Improvising Trio con il bassista Sergey Panasenko ed il batterista Sergey Belichenko, ha fatto parte della Novisibirsk State Circuì Orchestra, nel 1977 ha suonato con Igor Dmitriev nel gruppo Zolotoye Gody Dhaza (Jazz Golden Years) con il quale ha partecipato a molti jazz festival e nel 1981 ha ricostituito il suo quartetto “Homo Liber”insieme anche al pianista Yuri Yukachev. Dal 1981 ha insegnato al conservatorio, dove nel 1985 ha messo su un’orchestra tra gli studenti, la “EuroSib International Orchestra” diventata poi nel 1995 la “Novosibirsk State Philarmony.
