TYNER MCCOY, ALFRED SAUD SULAIMAN (P)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 11/12/1938.- 6/3/2020.
La madre pianista lo ha spronato ad intraprendere la strada musicale e, dopo aver frequentato la Granoff School of Music, a 15 anni ha diretto un gruppo di giovani, e lavorato con orchestre locali tra cui quella di Cal Casey, con Lee Morgan, Cal Massey, Jimmy Garrison e Albert ”Tootie” Heath. Poi ha avuto modo di suonare con musicisti in transito per la sua città: Kenny Dorham, Jackie McLean, Sonny Rollins, Max Roach. Nel 1956 ha incontrato John Coltrane e suonato con lui al “Red Rooster”, poi ha suonato con Benny Golson e nei Jazz Workshop con Curtis Fuller, Leroy Vinegar e Lennie McBrowne e nel 1959 con il Jazztet di Golson e Farmer. Nel 1960 è tornato con Coltrane e, questa seconda collaborazione, ha lasciato un segno profondo nella sua vita musicale. E’ rimasto con Coltrane sino al 1965 salvo qualche parentesi con Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter ed ha registrato da leader con la Impulse. Ha registrato per la Blue Note, con Roy Haynes, Clark Terry, Frank Strozier, John Gilmore, Thad Jones, Gary Bartz, Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Lewis, Freddie Waits, Ron Carter. Nel 1966 ha organizzato un suo trio con Jimmy Garrison e Elvin Jones. Nel 1972 è entrato nel trio Sonny Fortune e poi Azar Lawrence ed il violinista John Blake, ha fatto parte di una All Stars con Sonny Rollins, Ron Carter e Al Foster. Ha anche lavorato con i Messangers di Art Blakey nel 1963. Ha collaborato anche con Billy Harper, Michael Brecker, nel 1995 ha diretto i suoi Afro-Cuban All Stars. Pianista poderoso, originale, dal tocco inconfondibile. La sua tecnica è basata su ruggenti masse sonore. Egli è stato una presenza vitale nel panorama odierno del jazz. Vero erede di Coltrane, è stato il primo pianista ad applicare al piano la tecnica modale.

Cantante che ha fatto parte dell’Arkestra di Sun Ra per quasi tutti gli anni ’70, sino alla sua morte. Dopo essere stata colpita da una grave malattia, negli ultimi tempi, non essendo più in grado di cantare ha suonato il violino. Nel timbro di voce ricorda molto Sarah Vaughan.
TYUS CHARLES AND EFFIE.
Duo vocale che ha avuto un certo successo negli anni dal 1924 al 1931 incidendo diversi dischi per la Oken e per la Columbia accompagnati da Clarence Williams, da Ernest Elliott e Buddy Childer.
