Ha iniziato a suonare prima la chitarra, a sette anni il pianoforte, ad undici anni i timpani, il violino, lo xilofono ed infine il vibrafono alle scuole superiori. Ha frequentato il Michigan State University, ma il primo impatto con la musica lo ha avuto nel 1939 quando, frequentando la chiesa, ha cantato come tenore in un gruppo gospel. Ha scoperto il jazz suonando in piccoli gruppi locali e qui, nel 1944, è stato scoperto da Dizzy Gillespie che lo ha convinto a trasferirsi a New York nel 1945, dove ha conosciuto Charlie Parker ed il bop. Ha registrato con Dinah Washington, ha suonato con Dizzy Gillespie, Howard McGhee, Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Lucky Thompson, Woody Herman, Illinois Jacquet, Fats Navarro, Ray Brown, Kenny Clarke. Ha registrato con Jimmy Heath, Tadd Dameron, Thelonious Monk, Howard McGhee, Charlie Parker, Nat King Cole, Machito, Gil Fuller e Woody Herman. Quasi per caso, nel 1950, insieme a John Lewis, conosciuto durante il periodo trascorso con Gillespie, hanno messo su un quartetto ed inciso un album che ha avuto molto successo, ed è nato il Modern Jazz Quartet. Il gruppo iniziale era formato da Jackson, Lewis, Percy Heath al basso e Kenny Clark alla batteria, sostituito subito dopo da Connie Kay. Il gruppo è stato attivo sino al 1974. Successivamente Jackson ha continuato a suonare ed incidere con vari gruppi. Si è ritrovato con i suoi vecchi compagni del Modern Jazz Quartet, in occasione di concerti o tournée occasionali. L’esperienza fatta nel MJQ ha portato Jackson alla completa maturazione musicale. La voce del suo strumento è diventata liquida, piena di suggestione. Senz’altro il più grande vibrafonista bebop della storia del jazz. Pur suonando nei rigidi schemi dettati da John Lewis ha sempre conservato la sua personalità di autentico solista bop. Ha inciso anche nelle pause degli impegni del MJQ, con Ben Webster, Sonny Rollins, Henry Renaud, Ernestine Anderson, Horace Silver, Ray Charles, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson. Insieme a Ray Brown ha diretto una grossa orchestra. Ha insegnato alla Lenox Jazz School. Ha registrato con Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, con Mickey Cocker, musica fusion. A quanti gli hanno chiesto quale è l’origine del suo modo di suonare, suono pieno di soul, di blues e di gospel, egli ha risposto che gli viene dalla chiesa e dal cuore. Egli nei suoi soli ha reso sempre semplici le armonie più complicate, questo lo ha portato ad essere uno dei più grandi interpreti di ballads. Ha influito sulla sua musica anche il lungo rapporto con Lewis, che lo ha aiutato a fondere bop e armonia. Tutti i vibrafonisti moderni hanno attinto al suo stile e gli devono profondo rispetto.

All’età di 14 anni ha iniziato a suonare nella sua città con Thad Jones, Paul Chambers, Tommy Flanagan e con Wardell Gray nel 1949. Ha studiato alla MIller High School. In seguito insieme a Eddie Locke ha formato un duo “Bop and Locke”. Sciolto il duo con Locke, ha suonato nei teatri e nei night club, nel 1955 ha lavorato al Teatro Apollo di Harlem, poi in Canada e a New York, con qualsiasi gruppo e tipo di musica. Ha suonato con Teddy Wilson, dal 1959 al 1961 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Charlie Shawers, con Buck Clayton, con Pee Wee Russell, con la grande orchestra di Benny Goodman, dal 1962 al 1964 con quella di Lionel Hampton, nel 1965 con Lucky Thompson all’Half Note di New York, con Kenny Burrell. Ha girato il Belgio con Clayton, ha registrato con Ray Bryant e con Billy Strayhorn, con King Curtis, con Joe Newman, Gene Hammons, Etta Jones. Dal 1964 al 1970 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Earl Hines. Nel 1969 ha formato il JPJ Quartet, insieme a Budd Johnson, Bill Pemberton e Dill Jones, poi ha registrato con Illinois Jacquet ed ha sostituito Sam Woodyard nell’orchestra di Duke Ellington. Ha registrato con Dexter Gordon, Charlie Shavers, Paul Gonsalves, Ray Nance, Roy Eldridge, Roland Kirk ed ha suonato con Sy Oliver al Raimbow Room di New York. All’inizio della carriera ha lavorato in gruppi minstrels e nelle medicine show, nel territorio del Texas. Nel 1920 si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha lavorato sino al 1935 in Maxwell Street. Ha inciso per la Paramount come leader e come accompagnatore di Ma Rainey nel 1928 e con Blind Blazer nel 1929. Il suo ultimo impegno è stato con Sweet Williams. Precursore dello stile hokum, egli ha usato il banjo come una chitarra.

Ha iniziato a suonare il basso all’età di nove anni, ha studiato anche fagotto e pianoforte e a 14 anni ha suonato con l’Orchestra Sinfonica di Oakland. Ha frequentato il San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Ha fondato con Herbie Hancock il gruppo “Headhusters”. Nel 1985 si è trasferito in Giappone, dove è stato molto attivo in concerti con Tsutomu Yamachita e Sadao Watanabe. Ha insegnato in molte scuole giapponesi. Nel 1998 è tornato negli States per ricongiungersi ad Hancock nei “Returns of the Headhusters”, con il quali hanno girato l’America e l’Europa. Durante la sua carriera ha anche collaborato con Sonny Rollins e con gli Steps Ahead.

Ha anche collaborato con John Kirby, con Dinah Washington nel 1947, Dave Young, con Hillard Brown nel 1949 e con Eddie Chamblee nel 1955.

Ha studiato e si è diplomato all’Università di New Orleans. Nel 1917 si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha studiato il trombone ed ha iniziato a lavorare con Tig Chambers e poi con Al Simeon. Ha studiato privatamente ancora con due ottimi maestri come Honorè Dutrey e Roy Palmer. Ha suonato con Eli Rice, con Teddy Weatheford, con Art Sims nel 1925 e con Dave Peyton. Nel 1926 ha messo su un suo gruppo con il quale ha lavorato nei locali del South Side e ha registrato anche vari dischi per la Paramount. Ha suonato anche con Bernie Young, nel 1930 con Dave Peyton, con Erskine Tate, nel 1931 con Louis Armstrong, poi con Johnny Long nel 1932, con Fran Jaxon nel 1933, Jimmy Bell, Carroll Dickerson, con Jimmie Noone nel 1936,con il quale ha effettuato anche delle ottime incisioni. In seguito sarà molto attivo sempre a Chicago con suoi gruppi e con William Lyle, Zilner Randolph, Roy Eldridge, Walter Barnes, Half Pint. Nel 1939 ha lasciato la musica per diventare amministratore del sindacato dei musicisti, compito che ha svolto sino al 1957. E’ tornato a suonare Lil Haridn nel 1959 e con Little Brown Montgomery nel 1969. Negli anni ’70 ha fatto anche una tournée in Europa. E’ ancora attivo alla Preservation Hall di New Orleans. Classico potente trombonista di stile New Orleans.

Ha debuttato con Gerald Hobson nel 1927, poi ha suonato con Wesley Helvey nel 1929, poi con Zack Whyte, con i McKinney’s Cotton Pickers nel 1930, con Don Redman dal 1932 al 1940, con Fletcher Henderson, Cab Calloway, Lucky Millinder e nel 1950 è con Duke Ellington, con il quale ha collaborato per molti anni. Ha registrato e suonato anche con Count Basie nel 1961, con Charlie Mingus nel 1962, con Wess Montgomery, la Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis, Quincy Jones, con Louie Bellson nel 1964, con Gerald Wilson nel 1966, Al Cohn. Ha fatto parte dell’orchestra che accompagna Sammy Davis Jr., e nelle orchestre nei teatri di Broadway. Trombonista dalla voce aspra e un appassionato senso dello swing. Soprannominato ”Butter” da Don Redman per il suo carattere amabile e dolce.

Pianista emerso negli anni’90 sulla scena jazzistica newyorkese. Ha collaborato con Don Murray, Ray Anderson, Billy Bang, Don Byron, James Carter, Hamiet Bluiett, Vincent Chancey e Kip Hanrahan. Di origini cinesi da parte di madre, gli stessi che gli hanno dato il soprannome ”D.D.” che in cinese vuol dire fratellino. Si è diplomato in pianoforte classico alla Indiana University ed in seguito ha studiato anche alla Manhattan School Of Music con Jaki Byard e privatamente da Don Pullen.

Ha iniziato a suonare con John Hicks, Lester Bowie e Julius Hemphill, ma il suo primo ingaggio da professionista lo ha ottenuto con il gruppo dei ”Red Tops”di James Clay. In seguito ha lavorato a New York con Betty Carter, Charles Mingus, ha registrato con Charles Tyler, ha collaborato con Albert Ayler nel 1966, Jackie McLean, McCoy Tyner, Stanley Turrentine, Charles Lloyd, Roy Ayers, Freddy Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Kenny Dorham, Ray Bryant, con Ornette Coleman nel 1975 e con Cecil Taylor. Nel 1980 ha messo su la ”The Recording Society” di cui è leader, poi ha collaborato con James Blood Ulmer nei ”Music Revelation Ensemble”, con Peter Brotzman, Sonny Sharrock e con Bill Laswell. JACKSON RUDY, RUDOLPH (ST)

E’ cresciuto a Chicago, dove la famiglia si era trasferita. Tra i componenti della sua famiglia vi sono diversi musicisti. Ha iniziato a suonare in piccoli gruppi locali anonimi ed il primo ingaggio importante è arrivato con Carroll Dickerson. In seguito ha suonato con King Oliver nel 1923, con Billy Butler nel 1925 e nel 1926 + entrato nell’orchestra di Duke Ellington. Ha fatto una torunèe in Europa con Nobble Sissle nel 1929. In Europa ha suonato anche con Leon Abbey e Teddy Watherford, con i quali ha fatto in seguito varie tournée in tutto il mondo. Ha lasciato la musica nel 1940 per diventare impiegato nella Wester Union.
JACKSON TONY, ANTHONY. (P-VC)
New Orleans, Louisiana. 5/6/1876. – Chicago, Illinois. 20/4/2001.
Il suo debutto lo ha fatto in un locale di New Orleans chiamato l’Amelia, poi è passato al Tchoupitoulas, al Gypsy Schaeffer’s ed al Lulu’s White’s. Queste erano tutte case di piacere di Storyville, nelle quali egli è diventato celebre. Nel 1910 si è trasferito a Chicago e nel 1918 ha messo su un gruppo del quale faceva parte anche Sidney Bechet, con il quale si è esibito al Pekin Cabaret ed in altri club, in duo con il pianista Glover Compton. E’ stato uno dei primi pianisti ragtime della storia del Jazz di cui si ricordi il nome. Musicista leggendario, in base anche alle testimonianze di Jelly Roll Morton e Alberta Hunter, che lo ricorda come un bravissimo cantante, un pianista brillante, ottimo compositore, oltre che alcoolizzato e omosessuale.
