If you're like us, you're probably wondering why it's taken a TV company so long to give us the show we always wanted: the show where Carlton from The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air sings a duet with Peter Frampton.
And who's to thank for this brain-curdling idea for a TV show? Why, none other than our very favourite shiny-toothed, giganto-trousered, violently smug dream-wrecker Simon Cowell, who has also roped in Lea Thompson from Back To The Future, Xena: Warrior Princess, Macy Gray and Michael Bolton for the show – the imaginatively-titled Celebrity Duets.
Reality TV shows are just so much better in America than they are in England, aren't they? Simon Cowell launches a celebrity duets show and – as well as having the bald-faced cheek to call it Celebrity Duets – he gets gigantic names like Chris Jericho, Lucy Lawless, Cheech from Cheech And Chong, a gold-medal Olympiad, the Mum from Back To The Future, Carlton out of The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air and a couple of other people we haven't heard of to take part.
And then there's the staggering list of professional singers that Simon Cowell has roped into appearing on Celebrity Duets too; Michael Bolton, Belinda Carlisle, Peter Frampton, Macy Gray, Chaka Khan, Kenny Loggins, Smokey Robinson and Dionne Warwick have all agreed to take part.
Remember when the BBC tried to a similar duets show with Just The Two Of Us , who did they get to appear? A couple of newsreaders, some bloke from Hollyoaks and Gaby Roslin singing with Curtis Stigers and one of Atomic Kitten, that's who. What a bag of shit. Anyway, according to Access Hollywood, this is how Celebrity Duets will work:
Each week, the celebrity competitors — as long as they remain in the competition — will be paired with a different recording superstar among Grammy Award-winning and No. 1 artists… In addition, legendary producer David Foster will serve as a judge for the weekly singing competition. Additional recording superstars and other show participants will be announced.
The announcement of Celebrity Duets will no doubt tear a giant divide down the middle of America, between households who want to see the long awaited duet between Belinda Carlisle and Cheech, and those who'd naturally favour watching Jerry Springer foxtrot on Dancing With The Stars. Still, on the bright side – knowing what goes on during these reality TV shows after the Kristy Swanson affair – we might finally be able to see what the offspring of Kenny Loggins and Xena: Warrior Princess would look like, and it's all thanks to Celebrity Duets.
