Rick and Morty: The Anime Gets the Greenlight

Adult Swim has given us some anime-inspired Rick and Morty shorts before, but now it looks like they’re going all-in on an anime series based on the hit animated show from Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon.

Deadline reports that Rick and Morty: The Anime has been given the greenlight by Adult Swim, and will have Tower of God’s Takashi Sano. Though this will be the first series spinoff for Rick and Morty, Sano had actually helmed two R&M shorts before with Rick and Morty vs. Genocider and Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil).

We don’t have an official look at the series yet, but you can check out the shorts on Youtube. Hopefully this will give us an idea of what a series from Sano could look like:

With the nature of Rick and Morty as a show, we shouldn’t really expect there to be one long serialized story. Instead, the show is said to ‘adapt themes and events from the original title’ and will be separate from the flagship series.

I can’t wait to see what Sano comes up with when it comes to the Rick and Morty anime. We know that the original series already has a very unique and meta take when it comes to pop-culture, but just like the shorts, I hope that Sano’s spinoff will have a unique Japanese filter when it comes to all the jokes and genres it will be drawing influence from.

No release date has been set for Rick and Morty: The Anime, but the show is expected to premiere on Adult Swim and HBO Max.
