From producer Brad Fuller (A Quiet Place) comes the sci-fi thriller The Astronaut, and a first look image unveiled today of star Kate Mara (The Martian, “American Horror Story”) indicates that the genre film is going to be intense.

The Astronaut also stars Laurence Fishburne (John Wick films, The Matrix trilogy, Event Horizon) and Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate, “The Last Of Us”).

In the film, “When astronaut Sam Walker (Mara) returns from her first space mission, she’s found miraculously alive in a punctured capsule floating deep off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Expecting to be reunited with her husband (Luna), she finds herself placed under intense NASA surveillance in a high security house for rehabilitation and medical testing under the control of General William Harris (Fishburne). However, when disturbing occurrences begin happening around the property, she fears that something extraterrestrial has followed her back to Earth.”

The sci-fi thriller was written and directed by Jess Varley (Phobias),  making her solo writing and directorial debut.

Producers include Fuller Media’s Brad Fuller (A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II, Universal’s The Purge films) and Cameron Fuller, alongside Wonder Company’s Eric B. Fleischman (J.D. Dillard’s Sleight) and Chris Abernathy (Barbarian).

“This story is very close to my heart and I’m profoundly grateful it’s resonated with such an immensely accomplished team of creatives. I couldn’t be more excited for audiences to fasten their seatbelts and go on this thrilling ride with us!” Varley previously said in a statement. It’s interesting to note that the statement came with the announcement of Emma Roberts’ casting as Sam Walker. The announcement that Mara would take over the role of Sam Walker arrived last September, ahead of the film’s production in Ireland.

The Astronaut is currently in post-production, so stay tuned for additional details on the sci-fi thriller as they arrive.

The supernatural webcomic Death of a Pop Star is headed to the screen, with Variety reporting that Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body, Lisa Frankenstein) will produce the film adaptation.

Additionally, Isa Mazzei (Cam, Faces of Death) will be writing the script!

From creator Violet Karim, Death of a Pop Star ” tells the supernatural story of Sophie, a beloved pop star at the top of her game — until she takes a tumble from the top of the stairs and wakes up in Hell. Lucky for her, the Grim Reaper is her number one fan and, in a desperate attempt to save his idol, secretly gives Sophie a second chance at life back on Earth.

“But with Sophie’s resurrection comes a deadly target on her back when she’s threatened with being dragged back to Hell.”

Wattpad Webtoon Studios is behind the upcoming film adaptation.

Death of a Pop Star is one of those titles that just lends itself so perfectly to a live-action adaptation,” said Wattpad Webtoon Studios president Aron Levitz. “Violet created such a mesmerizing, must-read story, and when it came to choosing a partner to help us bridge the gap between the living and the dead, who else does that better than Diablo Cody?”

Diablo Cody will produce alongside Mason Novick. “As a huge fan of both pop music and the undead, I am so excited to help bring this offbeat story to the screen,” said Cody.
