DCW issues notice to police over lapse in rescuing children

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Tuesday issued a notice to the Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, over ‘lapses’ in rescue of 17 girls from G.B. Road.

It is filed seeking to know the reasons for sending the girls back in violation of the orders of Child Welfare Committee along with the details of officers under whose approval the girls were sent back to the brothels.

According to the notice, the 13 girls were produced before the CWC after.

However, the DCW said, “The CWC had told the police to conduct age verification of the girls and until then, it had ordered, that all 17 girls be housed in a shelter home. Despite strong reservations and directions from statutory authorities, the girls were sent back to the brothel by the police.”

“Further, a statement by the Delhi Police is being reported that the girls were sent [back] to the brothel as they were allegedly staying there of their own will. However, the police failed to note that in case the girls turn out to be minors they were to be rescued regardless of their consent,” read the DCW’s letter.
