The self-proclaimed ‘Military Junta’, an armed faction of the opposition Renamo party, threatened on 5 January 2020 to continue and expand attacks on civilian targets in Sofala and Manica provinces in January and February 2020, if various demands were not met. The group continues to claim that security forces had abducted the family of a group member, threatening to attack schools if the family was not released. Similarly, the faction threatened to step up attacks on road traffic in Sofala and Manica provinces, and to attack military vehicles.
