Indian climber loses life while descending Mt Makalu, Nepal

While climbing down from the summit of Mount Makalu, an Indian mountaineer identified as Narayan Singh lost his life during an expedition to the world’s fifth highest mountain, said an official on Friday.

Mira Acharya, an official of Nepal Tourism Ministry said that Narayan passed away at the camp 4 on Thursday night while he was descending the 8,485-metre summit.

“Indian climber Narayan Singh died in Mt Makalu. He died at camp 4 while descending the summit,” Acharya said.

The incident comes a day after two West Bengal-based climbers – Biplab Baidya (48) and Kuntal Karar (46) – lost their lives in Nepal on Wednesday due to high altitude sickness during an expedition on Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest peak.

The fifth highest mountain in the world, Mt Makalu is in the Mahalangur Himalayas that is 19 km southeast of Mt Everest, on the border between Nepal and Tibet Autonomous Region, China.
