The 10 per cent reservations in government jobs and higher education for the economically backward sections in the general category would be implemented from Monday, said the Gujarat government.
With daylong discussions and voting in both the houses on the last day of winter session, the Constitution (One Hundred and Third Amendment) Act, 2019 was passed by the government. On Saturday, President Ram Nath Kovind gave it a nod.
To provide quota to the general category people with a family income of up to Rs 8 lakh per annum, the Act amends Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution.
The new quota will also be implemented in admissions and jobs which got advertised prior January 14 for which the actual process has not yet started.
In such cases, fresh announcement will have to be made. If the recruitment or admission process is been practised before January 14, the 10 per cent quota will not be applicable, the state government said.
With the new 10 per cent quota becoming a law with the President’s approval, the total reservation now stands at 59.5 per cent.
The opposition questioned the legality of the legislation as the SC has already fixed 50 per cent as the upper cap of the reservation.
