Top Gear – Customized

Having Top Gear character means having the commitment to do what is right as God defines right, regardless of the cost. Most of the time our problem isn’t knowing what is right or wrong, but rather having the will to do right. In and of ourselves we fall short, but by abiding in Jesus Christ our minds are renewed moment by moment, day by day, week by week, year by year…and thereby our life is transformed. This is a process that requires our participation.

Scriptures

John 8:31-32

Verse

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

Thought

Although we would love a quick fix for many things in life, taking one vitamin won’t fix your health deficiencies; one workout won’t get you in shape; one day of dieting won’t put you where you want to be on the scale; one day of saving money won’t do much to enhance your finances. Renewal only produces life-altering results with time and diligence. By the same token, attending church once in a while, saying a prayer or two and reading a few Bible verses isn’t going to allow God to renew your mind and customize your character. Transformation takes place ONLY as you read God’s word and get to know Jesus personally. As you continue to abide with him over time and with diligence, God’s amazing work will become apparent in your life and you will want more.

Questions

Where is your character most likely to falter—thought life, honesty, forgiveness, pride, anger, selfishness, materialism, authority, truthfulness, or maybe your speech (what you say)?

Response

Commit to abiding. Until you take real steps toward abiding in Jesus Christ through God’s word, nothing will really change. Determine to spend time in God’s word and focus on Scripture that will strengthen your character where it’s most needed. Be patient with yourself; God loves you!

Prayer

Dear God, why is it often so hard to do what I absolutely know is right? Thank you for giving me your word as a way to know you and as a guide for life. Help me to abide in Jesus. I commit to spend time reading, hearing and learning your word each day. I want you to mold and customize my character as only you can do. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
