Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State on Monday advised corps members to avail themselves of the various entrepreneurial trainings at the orientation camp by acquiring skills for self reliance.
Ahmed gave this advice during the opening of the 2016 Batch ‘B’ Orientation course of the National Youth Service Corps at the permanent orientation camp, Yikpata, Kwara State.
The governor was represented on the occasion by the Head of Service, Hajia Sara Umar.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 1,961 prospective corps members took the oath of allegiance, which was administered by the state Chief Judge, represented by Justice Aminat Ishaq.
Ahmed said: “I advice you to take advantage of the skill acquisition programmes at the orientation camp and prepare yourselves for the future.”
He said the State Government believed in providing employment for the youth of the state and had, therefore, put in place various empowerment schemes.
Ahmed said the State Government had set aside over N1.9 billion for empowerment and micro credit schemes, adding that corps members posted to the state could benefit from.
The governor also charged the corps members to participate actively in community development service during their primary assignments.
He said: “Your contributions to community development are noteworthy, as it could further enhance the relevance of the National Youth Service Scheme.
“Work hard with the grassroots people to improve the health and socio-economic lives of the community you are posted to.”
Ahmed advised the corps members to be cautious of dangerous reptiles that might be looking for cool places to stay as a result of this hot weather, by wearing their boots always.
In his address, the NYSC State Coordinator, Eric Enyenihi, congratulated the corps members on their successes in the final examinations that qualified them for the national service.
The coordinator stated that a total of 1, 961 corps members comprising of 1, 071 males and 890 females, were registered as at the close of the registration at 12.00 midnight on Friday.
Enyenihi lauded the governor for his financial assistance in form of the annual subvention to the NYSC and meal subsidy during the orientation camp.
The coordinator also called on Ahmed to provide adequate security at the camp in order to prevent cases of theft being experienced there.
