IBM opening its first quantum computing data system in Europe

IBM is opening its first quantum data center in Europe. The data center, slated for operation by 2024, will house multiple IBM quantum computing systems featuring utility scale quantum processors, each with over 100 qubits.

The facility will serve as IBM Quantum’s European cloud region, enabling users to access cloud-based quantum computing resources for research and exploratory purposes, the company said in a statement. The center will comply with European data regulations, ensuring that all job data processing takes place within EU borders.

The IBM Quantum Network already has over 60 organizations in Europe, including Bosch, CERN, and T-Systems. These organizations are leveraging quantum hardware and software through the cloud for diverse applications, ranging from material science and high-energy physics to energy transition and financial use cases, says IBM.

This marks IBM’s second quantum data center and quantum cloud region following its Poughkeepsie, New York location.
