The city’s Public Works division has partnered with HandsOn Santa Clarita, a local non-profit volunteer organization, to build a Community Reinvestment Program that assigns court-appointed community service volunteers to help keep the streets of Santa Clarita clean.
Since the program’s inception less than a year ago, nearly 80 tons of debris from public right of ways have been collected from Santa Clarita streets.
City staff supervise an average of eight volunteers assigned to a street to clear weeds, trash, litter and even abandoned furniture from the street. The Community Reinvestment Program services streets that the City’s Public Work’s division identifies as “hot spots” in need of the program’s assistance – typically areas that are not covered by a Home Owner’s Association or in the Landscape Maintenance District zone.
The program’s noticeably bright orange colored trash bags can be seen lined up along the streets that were serviced. The trash bags even have the City logo on them with the line, “Helping to Keep Santa Clarita Clean,” and that’s exactly what the program is aiming to do.
