Old Boys

This is the first of two movie remakes out this week, and the only one of the two which looks any good.

In this vibrant school-set re-working of Cyrano De Bergerac, an awkward but imaginative pupil (Alex LawtherGhost Stories) helps the handsome but spectacularly dim school-hero (Jonah Hauer-King) pursue the fiery daughter (Pauline Étienne) of a visiting French teacher (Denis Ménochet).

I laughed a lot while watching this so I’m really looking forward to it.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

Piercing looks to be quite an odd film, but one where Reed (Christopher Abbott) kisses his wife and baby goodbye and seemingly heads away on business, with a plan to check into a hotel, call an escort service, and kill unsuspecting prostitute Jackie (Mia Wasikowska).

The trailer feels a little all over the place, but with enough to make it worth watching.

NOTE: This film was originally out last week, but has been bumped to this week for some reason.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Hit!

On the Basis of Sex tells the true story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity JonesRogue One: A Star Wars Story), her struggles for equal rights and what she had to overcome in order to become a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

This looks a bit dull to me, so I’ll be giving it a miss.

Director: Mimi Leder
Writer: Daniel Stiepleman
Also stars: Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Cailee Spaeny, Kathy Bates, Stephen Root, Jack Reynor, Sam Waterston, Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!

Capernaum (aka Chaos) tells the story of Zain (Zain al Rafeea), a Lebanese boy who sues his parents for the “crime” of giving him life.

He’s a gutsy streetwise child as he flees his negligent parents, survives through his wits on the streets, takes care of Ethiopian refugee Rahil (Yordanos Shiferaw) and her baby son, Yonas (Boluwatife Treasure Bankole), being jailed for a crime, and finally, seeks justice in a courtroom. It was made with a cast of non-professionals playing characters whose lives closely parallel their own.

Following her script, writer/director Nadine Labaki placed her performers in scenes and asked them to react spontaneously with their own words and gestures.

However, I tried watching the trailer and really didn’t get it.

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!

Cold Pursuit is the other remake of the week. This time, old racist Liam Neeson stars in a new version of Stellan Skarsgård’s In Order of Disappearance.

Writer: Frank Baldwin
Original screenplay: Kim Fupz Aakeson
Also stars: Emmy Rossum, Tom Bateman, William Forsythe, Laura Dern, Julia Jones, Raoul Max Trujillo, Domenick Lombardozzi, Aleks Paunovic

Hit or Miss? Verdict: Miss!
