Here are some of the details of what to expect at this year’s annual meeting:

Division of Workers’ Compensation Commissioner Cassie Brown Presentation

Appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott as the DWC Commissioner in November of 2018, Cassie Brown will provide the annual meetings keynote presentation expected to include an overview of leading workers’ compensation related issues of interest to nonsubscribers. This will be Commissioner Brown’s first appearance with the organization.

Key Topics to be Covered by Legal Panels

The always popular legal panels will once again feature some of the state’s top workplace injury defense attorneys including:

  • Bill Ashcraft (The Ashcraft Law Firm – Dallas)
  • Robert Estrada (Blanco, Ordonez, Mata & Wallace – El Paso)
  • Jerry Fazio (Owen & Fazio – Dallas)
  • Bernie Hauder (Adkerson, Hauder & Bezney – Dallas)
  • Donna Peavler (The Peavler – Dallas)
  • Karl Seelbach (Doyle & Seelbach – Austin)

Topics to be covered during the legal panels include:

  • Key steps in accident investigation
  • Arbitration clause enforcement
  • Venue selection
  • Retention and use of store/company surveillance videos

Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions and visit with the attorneys one-on-one.

ODG Update

Phil LeFevre will provide an overview of ODG’s new platform and recent updates to the guidelines. Phil has been with ODG for 17 years and has worked with more than a dozen states in the adoption of the guidelines.

Presentation on “Injury Prevention: Maximizing Your Return on Investment”

Steven Clark of Select Medical’s WorkStrategies will review current issues and trends associated with the costs of workers’ compensation. His presentation will also include education on four injury prevention methods, strategies for successful implementation and how to maximize return on investment. The presentation has been certified for one hour of continuing education (CE) for Texas adjusters and certified case managers (CCM).

Report on the 86th Texas Legislature

TAN’s government relations team of Lucinda Saxon and Karen Reagan will provide an overview of key business and workers’ compensation related issues of interest to nonsubscribers.

Nonsubscriber Networking Reception

A networking reception sponsored by the Austin-based law firm of Doyle and Seelbach for conference attendees will be held at the historic Austin Club. The evening setting, just blocks from the state Capitol, provide a memorable backdrop for the culmination of the days activities.
