The moors are implicit in every tale in these books. They hang over every story and every life in this part of the world. They are the empty space which give shape to the rivers, the roads and the villages in the Dales below. They are also the void from which the stories emerge. The wild wind blowing through the heather, the dripping of water emanating from the disused mine shafts, the bleak and solitary call of the curlew – all bring voices.
