The Hidden Forces of Life — Introduction

Featured

Isaac Newton identified various forces that operate in the physical external world around us. His work was followed up by numerous others and codified into laws of physical substance. The force of gravity is one such force that impacts the movement and attraction of physical objects. Other forces operative on the physical level include electromagnetic force, strong nuclear force and weak nuclear force. These forces together create the physical structure of the universe as we conceive it and know it.

We recognise physical forces and can observe and even predict their effect on physical objects. We can also recognise the operation of forces in different aspects of our being, such as the operation of attraction and repulsion on the vital level. Many have recognised the existence of a universal vital force, called variously Prana, Qi, Mana (and other names) depending on the culture from which the name originates.

If we extend our view to the mental level, we can identify mental forces that impact us, thought-suggestions, both visible and occult. We can trace mental influences through time as we identify the lines of mental development.

It becomes clear that each aspect of existence is governed by and acted upon by forces both seen and unseen, and that there is also an interaction where the various elements of existence impinge upon one another. It also becomes clear that as we explore the complexity and interactions that take place in the entire universal creation, that there are forces and powers that we have not yet identified nor fully appreciated or understood. As we delve further into quantum mechanics we see actions which are inexplicable under the laws of Newtonian physics, which implies the action of forces not yet fully revealed to us. What we begin to recognise is that forces interact and as they interact they create a new result which is neither solely the one nor the other of the two interacting forces. Consider the creation of a new human being, which occurs through the interaction of the genetic material provided by the male with the genetic material provided by the female. The child expresses a new, combined set of genetic patterns, taking some from each of the two original sets of genes. There are forces at work which govern this interaction of genetic material and the results.

We believe we make our own decisions about what to do, when to do it, how to do it and why we do it. Upon further reflection we see that a chain of ’cause and effect’ has operated to bring us to this specific point in time, place and circumstance, and that our actions are very much controlled and dictated by these antecedents. What role do these hidden forces of life play, and to what extent are we able to understand, modify, control or decide utilizing our free will and independence? In order to understand our own actions and the context within which we live our lives, we need to delve into the hidden, occult levels of the creation that drive all actions in the universe.

William Shakespeare in Julius Caesar has Brutus exclaim: ”There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.”

Sri Aurobindo notes: ”This is certain that when we go back into ourselves very deep away from the surface appearance, we find that the mind, heart and sensational being of man are moved by forces not under his own control and that he can become an instrument in the hands of Energies of a cosmic character without knowing the origin of his actions. It is by stepping back from the physical surface into his inner being and subliminal consciousness that he becomes directly aware of them and is able to know directly and deal with their action upon him.”

Suggestions For Optimizing the Benefit of this Blog for Your Study of Sri Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga

Featured

The Sri Aurobindo Studies daily blog is sponsored by the Institute for Wholistic Education with a unique, self-directed and systematic study of Sri Aurobindo’s major works.  For the last 13 years, we have focused on page by page review, directed headline, commentary and citations from Sri Aurobindo’s and The Mother’s writings.  A new post is generated just about daily.  The current book under review is a compilation titled Living Within: the Yoga Approach to Psychological Health and Growth, put together by Dr. A.S. Dalal and featuring citations from both Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.  You are welcome to join us at https://sriaurobindostudies.wordpress.com

GENERAL ADVICE TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR PARTICIPATION:   We took up the daily ‘page by page’ review of the writings of Sri Aurobindo with the idea that it would provide both a comprehensive understanding of Sri Aurobindo’s work, as well as a new depth of understanding.  We have found that covering approximately one page per day, and reflecting on the subject and the citations, has enormous benefits so we encourage you to take your time, work at your own pace, and not try to rush through the process.  There is no benefit to speed.  It is much more important to let the writing sink in and begin over time to transform the view and the interpretation we have in all areas of life.   The effect is cumulative and the further one goes, the deeper the understanding becomes.  This is not so much an intellectual exercise and there is no need to strain the thought process.  Let the concepts simply be absorbed and sink in and begin to address the way all life and action is understood.

You may also find that you prefer a different approach, such as taking up a particular idea or concept that intrigues you, and using the search box to identify all references and follow them through day by day.  We recommend a “free progress” form of learning.  It is not about ‘information’ but about widening, opening and deepening the understanding within your own being.

The resource at this blog link gives you an enormous capability to direct your own study according to your own interest and at your own pace.  We have the following resources available which you can tap into from the home page:

Upon completion of the current title Living Within, we expect to take up another compilation by Dr. A.S. Dalal titled Growing Within as the next subject.

The page by page review of each of these books follows in date order and provides a citation reference to the chapter and page of the book from which the citations and commentaries are drawn.

ARCHIVE OF PRIOR POSTS IN DATE SEQUENCE:

The archive is organized by month from August 2009 through the current month.  Within each month the relevant articles appear in date sequence order.  The first book taken up was The Life Divine, so study of that text will start with the August 2009 posts.

SEARCH BLOCK:

There is also a search feature which is very useful when you would like to find all references to a particular term or concept across all the books that have been covered.  For instance, if you want to find references to ‘rebirth’ or ‘supermind’ or ‘divine life’ simply type the relevant words into the search box and you will have immediate access to all posts with that reference.

DAILY PODCAST:

There is also a link to a daily podcast which began in the winter/spring of 2021.  The podcast converts the daily posts from that time forward into audio files for those who prefer to listen rather than read the posts.

OTHER WAYS TO ACCESS THE DAILY POSTS AND PODCASTS:

The daily posts feed to www.facebook.com/SriAurobindosWritings  if you prefer to use facebook for the day to day postings.   You may choose to “like” or “follow” that page if you want to get the most recent post each day when it appears.    However, all of the archive, search functions and organized presentation for past titles appear only at https://sriaurobindostudies.wordpress.com

DAILY POST REMINDERS:  if you choose to “follow” this blog directly at https://sriaurobindostudies.wordpress.com  (go to Reader  link near top left of home page, do a search in the box for Sri Aurobindo Studies and then click on the “follow” button) you will get a reminder follow up when the daily post goes “live”.

ACCESS TO THE BOOKS:

The print editions of the books are available world-wide through various agencies or centers including S.A.B.D.A. from Puducherry.  The USA editions are published by Lotus Press through arrangement with the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Copyright Department.   You can find all the USA print editions at www.lotuspress.com   Most of these titles are now also available for download as e-books through either Amazon kindle, Apple itunes, or Google play.  Some of the links to the e-books are on the home page of the daily blog.  All of the current e-book links can be found at the respective title at www.lotuspress.com    Also, as each book was completed in the blog, a print and e-book edition of all relevant blog posts has been published by Lotus Press under the general umbrella of Readings in …. (and the appropriate title of Sri Aurobindo).  This may provide another convenient way to access the systematic study on your own.

QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS:

The purpose of the blog is to engage the reader in the deeper sense of Sri Aurobindo’s writings, to explore the depths and breadths of the ground he covered, and to make the books highly accessible to the reader.  We therefore encourage engagement and are happy to have participants make relevant comments to the post when they have something to add or respond to; and to bring forward questions so that we may try to assist in guiding you to the appropriate references or direction to have those questions answered.

THE BLOG EDITOR:

My name is Santosh Krinsky and I have been actively studying Sri Aurobindo’s work since I was handed a copy of The Life Divine back in 1971.  I resided at Sri Aurobindo Ashram from mid 1973 through early 1974 and have been continuously involved with this work since that time.  I also act as the editor-in-chief at Lotus Press, the USA publisher of the writings of Sri Aurobindo.  I reside at this time in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA with my wife Karuna and we welcome visitors who are interested to join us for meditation, or one on one sessions.   We also maintain a library for the use of friends and devotees.   We manage the Institute for Wholistic Education, a 501©3 tax exempt organization under the local name Sri Aurobindo Center of Honolulu, Hawaii.

From time to time I have done extensive interviews with organizations such as SelfGrowth.com and Cultural Integration Fellowship.  These video interviews have been recorded and are also available as follows:

Cultural integration Fellowship:  https://www.facebook.com/LotusPress/videos/1493420001101922  Solving the Existential Crisis of Humanity Through the Evolution of Consciousness with Some Practical Examples (Auroville)

SOME FINAL THOUGHTS:

We hope you will enjoy this process and look forward to the daily study.  The posts are relatively short in length in order to fit into just about any schedule.  We find this is best taken up either early in the day before the daily activities carry us away, or in the evening when work is done and there is some opportunity for quiet time and reflection.  Thank you for joining this program and please don’t hesitate to let us know if we may be of further service in some way during this process.  You will note that the blog is already 13 years in process, so you can make of this part of a lifelong pursuit if you so choose, as we ourselves have undertaken to do.  Personally, I find this method of approach far more beneficial than simply trying to read through any of the books in a normal somewhat hurried manner the way things are done in university courses.  Take your time, reflect, and let this be a light-filled and uplifting part of your day.  The benefit is not in the quantity of the reading and study, but in the quality and the impact it has in your life….

Sri Aurobindo Studies

Featured

Sri Aurobindo’s integral yoga has enormous implications for the time we find ourselves in.  As we systematically destroy the basis of life on the planet, and wall off one another through ultimate fragmentation, we are left with the stark contrast of choosing between survival and destruction, life and death, growth or decline.  Sri Aurobindo recognizes the necessity of the individual within the context of the collectivity, universality and the transcendent consciousness of Oneness.  The individual is the nexus or hub of the evolutionary urge, but not separate from nor at the expense of the life of the cosmic whole.

We post the daily blog entries also to our facebook page:  www.facebook.com/sriaurobindoswritings

We also have a daily twitter feed on Sri Aurobindo’s studies at www.twitter.com/santoshk1

We have systematically worked our way through The Life Divine as well as The Mother , Essays on the Gita and Rebirth and Karma, The Synthesis of Yoga, The Ideal of Human Unity and The Human Cycle: The Psychology of Social Development  The newest posts appear near the top.  If you want to start at the beginning, go to the oldest post and roll forward until you reach the final posts as of today.

Another option is to “search” for the chapter you would like to study and see all posts relating to that chapter. You may have to ask for “older posts” once you have the search results if you are looking for one of the earlier chapters.

We have separated the posts relating to each book into their own folder as an additional organisational tool.

Similarly you can use the search box to find specific concepts, terms or issues you are interested in. The results will show all posts that address those concepts or terms. You may have to click on “older posts” to find all the references here as well.

The next book we are taking up is The Upanshads by Sri Aurobindo, following a similar format to that we have utilised for The Life Divine , The Mother, Essays on the Gita and Rebirth and Karma, The Synthesis of Yoga, The Ideal of Human Unity and The Human Cycle: Psychology of Social Development.

Biological Energy Developed from Food and from Other Sources

People are not generally consciously aware of the energy interchanges that take place to fuel their bodies and drive their life energies. They understand that they need to eat food as a form of ‘fuel’ for their energy, and they count ‘calories’ that are produced by various food sources. Clearly, the connection between matter (in the form of food) and energy (in the form of life action and biochemical processes) is recognised and accepted. We also recognise that Einstein’s famous equation about the convertibility of Matter and Energy in physics also holds true in the field of life. And for most people, the entire subject of life-energy comes down to food and various stimulants.

Stimulants provide an artificial short-term apparent energy boost, not by bringing in new energy sources, but by prodding the biochemical systems to overproduce compared to their natural status. In fact, stimulants tend to eventually weaken the system by using stored energy for short-term requirements at the expense of longer-term balance, wellness and harmonious functioning of the body.

Food of course has its limitations as an energy source. There may be insufficient food, or it may be of poor quality, or it may have offsetting side effects depending on its composition and purity. The ability to convert food into life-energy also tends to weaken over time as various organ systems reduce their efficiency in action through ‘wear and tear’. Thus, we see the decline of the bodily systems, eventual weakening of the organs and the immune system, and the advent of disease, suffering and eventual death.

There are other sources of energy, and those who have figured out how to access and utilize them can find ways to extend both the length of life and the health and wellness experienced during that time. Certain yogic practices, and in particular hatha yoga and the practices of pranayama, can dramatically benefit the body both short- and long-term.

Some individuals have learned how to draw energy from others, and there are cases of individuals feeling drained or exhausted after meeting with such an individual. Those people tend to thrive at the expense of others, with the only issue here being the fact that energy sources other than material food actually exist.

Some people are ‘energized’ by any subject that holds their interest, by joyful or uplifting experiences, or through emotional interactions of a positive nature. This is actually part of a vital interchange that occurs all the time, although mostly unnoticed.

Spiritual practitioners also frequently report the descent of a force coming down from above the head and filling their being with force, light or energy. This represents yet another way that energy interchange can take place other than through the use of food.

The Mother notes: “Some people don’t know how to receive the forces at all. These live on the energies concentrated in the body — for there is some concentrated energy in all the cells of the body. They live upon that, but after some time, they are drained out completely if they don’t know how to recuperate; when they have spent all the energies which were concentrated inside them either they fall ill or they never recuperate them. So this cannot last very long; it lasts the average lifetime of human beings, and yet, at the end of a certain number of years they are no longer able to make the same effort or to produce as much, or above all to make any progress.”

Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, The Hidden Forces of Life, Ch. 4 Cosmic and Universal Forces, pg. 94

Drawing on the Universal Energy for Life-Force

If we observe the way we receive energy normally, we can determine that the sun is the immediate source of physical energy and it then gets transformed, or converted, into other forms of energy including life energy. The first step in this transformation comes about through the ability of plants to turn solar energy into life-energy. The plants then store the produced energy, using some of it for growth and some for life activities. Animals, in turn consume plants to obtain a share of this physical energy which they need to survive and thrive. Some beings then consumer animal flesh to take this energy, now several steps removed from its source, The secret to direct conversion of solar energy into life-force, and the creation of storage mechanisms for that energy in the form of the physical forms of the plants (and animals) is held by the absolute simplest living organisms we know!

Somewhere locked away in the coding of our existence, this secret lies hidden. Some individuals have found ways to partially unlock this secret and they are able to draw their life-force directly from universal forces without requiring the medium of food and the conversion steps implied thereby.

Paramahansa Yogananda relates a tale in his classic text Autobiography of a Yogi, of an individual he met who was able to draw the energy directly from the universe and who thereby needed to eat very little, if anything, in order to maintain an active life.

Many people, mostly unconsciously, have some amount of capacity to draw on the universal forces more or less directly, even if they remain primarily dependent upon consumption of food to provide the basis for their physical existence. They absorb the energy through receptivity, and through the breathing process, they absorb Prana and distribute it to work within their body.

Another secret lies in the mitochondria within the body’s cells. This is the “energy factor” that converts the components absorbed from the food into usable biological energy.

This opens up an entire range of speculation about the possible future ability to reduce, or even entirely abandon, the need for food to convert, store, and provide energy in the ascending scale of what is known as the ‘food chain’. Once the linkage between a physical processing capability and the utilization of universal force has been broken, we can conceive of a future in which the individual can draw energy directly.

It is interesting to note that in a corresponding way, Nikola Tesla envisioned the production of mechanical and useful electrical energy directly from the atmosphere without intervening mechanisms. The example provided by those individuals who have learned to rely on universal forces rather than physical food for their sustenance and energetic needs provide a further hint of our future status.

A disciple asks: On what do our physical reserves [energy reserves] depend, Mother?

The Mother responds: “Physical reserves? You mean the reserve of energy? It depends on the capacity to receive the universal vital force; because in fact, through food also it is these vital forces one receives but one receives them from below. But in order to have reserves you must know how to receive the universal vital forces constantly and to have a kind of balance in the being which prevents you from spending more than you have.”

“A proportion has to be kept between the receptivity and the expenditure. It is a kind of harmony in the being which must be established. Only, some people have an almost instinctive power of attracting towards them the vital forces or absorbing them — the universal vital forces, I mean — and so they make up their expense as they go along spending. These people can produce much more than others. Some of them, in certain conditions like sleep or a kind of repose or relaxation, can accumulate forces and later they exhaust them, so to say, in their activities and they must yet once again charge the battery afterwards — this is already a much less favourable condition.”

Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, The Hidden Forces of Life, Ch. 4 Cosmic and Universal Forces, pp. 93-94

Overcoming the Discomfort of Cold Temperatures

Dealing with the heat radiation that comes from the sun is a matter of gaining the ability to absorb and utilize the energy without being overwhelmed by its force. Turning then to the issue of how to deal with cold, we have an entirely different scenario, in that we have a reduction in the energy available to us to absorb heat. Cold represents a lack of force, rather than an active force in its own right.

Nevertheless, it is useful, and important, to be able to determine how the body can effectively respond to cold. The normal reaction is an attempt to shrink in and close off the body from the impact of the cold, and in particular, to protect the body core. Obviously shelter, clothing and external heat generation are mechanisms we utilize, but this is not the answer to the question raised by the disciple to which the Mother responded.

The famous escape artist Harry Houdini reported that he systematically trained his body to bear the cold by bathing in ice and eventually he used this capability as part of his career. In this case, he habituated the body to respond to cold and accept it rather than try to escape it or protect against it through external means.

The Tibetan tradition describes a practice known by the name of tummo, which is a form of meditation practice which utilizes pranayama and visualisation. Advanced practitioners are able to withstand extreme cold, and Western scientists, studying the phenomena, have validated the increase in body heat by skilled practitioners of this method.

The great Tibetan yogi, Milarepa, is said to have utilized ttummo as part of his spiritual practice. It is noted that he spent long periods of time in the Himalayan mountains meditating without apparently suffering the cold of the caves he was frequenting.

A well-known French traveler, author and Tibetan Buddhist practitioner, Madame Alexandra David-Neel, described her initiation and development in the practice of tummo, and her subsequent ability to withstand extreme cold.

We thus see several different techniques, one through habituation, the other through active generation of internal heat, used by people seeking to mitigate the impact of cold on the body. In neither case, is the individual burdened by feeling like he is suffering from the cold.

A disciple asks: “Can one do the same thing when it is cold?”

The Mother answers: “Yes, I think so. I think one can always do the same thing in all cases.”

“The sun is a very powerful symbol in the organisation of Nature. So it is not altogether the same thing; it possesses in itself an extraordinary condensation of energy. Cold seems to me a more negative thing: it is an absence of something. But in any case, if one knows how to enter the rhythm of the movements of Nature, one avoids many discomforts. What makes men suffer, what disturbs the balance of the body is a narrowness, it is always a narrowness. It happens because one is shut up in limits, and so there is, as Sri Aurobindo writes here, a force which presses too strongly for these limits — it upsets everything.”

Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, The Hidden Forces of Life, Ch. 4 Cosmic and Universal Forces, pp. 92-93

Receptivity to the Universal Vital Forces

In May 1973, a devotee from the West was visiting Auroville in South India. At that time, it was primarily an eroded, dusty plateau, not the lush forested scene that one can see today if one visits. May is an extremely hot month, and the visitor had just arrived a couple of weeks earlier from the United States. As he was walking around in the mid-day sun, he was struck by the intensity of the sun’s heat and force and at one point, he curled up on a hillside, overwhelmed with heat stroke and a pounding headache that accompanied it. After lying there for a while, he was prompted to get up or he would die on that hillside, so he found a way to get up, walk back to shelter and get some water. He lived to tell about it, but the trauma was deep. This is an example of not being able to open, receive and hold the universal force that was flowing.

The Mother tells another story, where some individuals found a way to open themselves and appreciate the power of the sun’s heat and force rather than succumbing to it.

There is a famous tale in the Puranas about a wife of Surya, the sun-god, who closed her eyes, trembled and could not bear the intensity of her husband’s force. Because of her closing of her eyes and trembling, Surya imprecated her to give birth to Yama, the God of Death, and Yami, the River Yamuna. She struggled for a long time to find a way to deal with the effulgence of the sun and her story has many twists and turns in it. Surya at one point asked his wife’s father, once he understood the issue, to reduce the intensity of his radiance sufficiently to allow the wife to bear the force. We see here an eventual accommodation whereby the universal force can be received and assimilated through achievement of an understanding between the universal force, in this case the sun, and the recipient of that force in the form of his wife.

As we see in these texts the universal force has both an impersonal and a personal aspect and a relationship can be developed if one appreciates the personality of that force and takes step to befriend rather than fear its power.

The Mother observes: “I knew young people who had always lived in cities — in a city and in those little rooms one has in the big cities in which everyone is huddled. Now, they had come to spend their holidays in the countryside, in the south of France, and there the sun is hot, naturally not as here but all the same it is very hot (when we compare the sun of the Mediterranean coasts with that of Paris, for example, it truly makes a difference), and so, when they walked around the countryside the first few days they really began to get a terrible headache and to feel absolutely uneasy because of the sun; but they suddenly thought: ‘Why, if we make friends with the sun it won’t harm us any more!’ And they began to make a kind of inner effort of friendship and trust in the sun, and when they were out in the sun, instead of trying to bend double and tell themselves, ‘Oh! how hot it is, how it burns!’, they said, ”Oh, how full of force and joy and love the sun is!’ etc., they opened themselves like this (gesture), and not only did they not suffer any longer but they felt so strong afterwards that they went round telling everyone who said, ‘It is hot’ — telling them ‘Do as we do, you will see how good it is.’ And they could remain for hours in the full sun, bare-headed and without feeling any discomfort. It is the same principle.”

“It is the same principle. They linked themselves to the universal vital force which is in the sun and received this force which took away all that was unpleasant to them.”

“When one is in the countryside, when one walks under the trees and feels so close to Nature, to the trees, the sky, all the leaves, all the branches, all the herbs, when one feels a great friendship with these things and breathes that air which is so good, perfumed with all the plants, then one opens oneself, and by opening oneself communes with the universal forces. And for all things it is like that.”

Receiving and Utilizing the Universal Vital Forces

In our fragmented process of understanding, we frequently create an artificial separation that does not exist in reality. Thus, seekers sometimes undertake to find ways to draw on the universal vital energy, when in fact, it is through the flow of that energy that they live, breathe, exist, grow and undertake actions. A more precise formulation of their interest is how to tap into the universal vital force consciously, at will, and with enhanced power flow.

The first thing necessary is to understand the nature of universal forces, wherever they are operative. All existence occurs as a result of the operation of universal forces. For the most part, we take their action for granted, and thus, do not see or recognise them as such. As an example, in his book The Mother, Sri Aurobindo points out that “Money is the visible sign of a universal force, and this force in its manifestation on earth works on the vital and physical planes and is indispensable to the fullness of the outer life. In its origin and its true action it belongs to the Divine.” Few actually consciously recognise what Sri Aurobindo implies here.

We are constantly drawing on the universal vital forces and then expending them again in our various actions and activities. This occurs automatically, unconsciously and spontaneously. The Mother provides the example of how children are automatically participating in this flow of energy on the vital level.

There are ways to restrict or block off flow of these forces, and that occurs in the acculturation, education and development process as individuals try to adjust their energetic action to fit within the framework of the society within which they are living. It also occurs through traumatic experiences, painful episodes or anything that causes an individual to “close off” and shut down their receptivity or build a wall around himself. Additionally, the play of forces focused through one chakra or another tends to restrict the flow of energy through the other energetic centers, so that, for instance, people fixated on ambition, or greed, or sex will have frequently very little openness to the centers that deal with intellect, higher emotions, compassion, etc. While this is not a complete correlation, it is often the case.

For anyone who has taken steps to wall off any of these energy nexuses within themselves, the ability to reopen those centers and get the energy flowing once again is of high importance.

This then brings us to the individual who is a spiritual aspirant, who has a reasonably receptive being and who seeks to enhance the flow of energies. There is an extensive body of yogic literature that describes how to open, activate and direct the energies, so it is not necessary to go into those options here. Each of the yogic paths addresses some aspect of opening to the higher forces and putting that energy to work in a positive way. the use of asana, pranayama, mudra, dhyana, concentration and samadhi are some of the techniques to bring the energy into the being and apply it for the seeker’s purpose.

Some individuals try to grab the force and appropriate it for their own desire-fulfillment. While this can be done in some cases, it can also be highly counter-productive and even harmful, particularly if the instrument, the body-life-mind complex, is not prepared and able to hold that force. Generally the best approach is a consistent, persistent, and focused receptivity in the being.

The Mother writes: “Some people discover that with certain movements, certain gestures, certain activities, they enter into contact more closely. I knew people who gesticulated while walking… this truly gave them the impression that they were in contact — certain gestures they made while walking… But children do this spontaneously: when they give themselves completely in their games, running, playing, jumping, shouting; when they spend all their energies like that, they give themselves entirely, and in the joy of playing and moving and running they put themselves in contact with this universal vital force; they don’t know it, but they spend their vital force in a contact with the universal vital force and that is why they can run without really feeling very tired, except after a very long time. That is, they spend so much that if they were not in contact with the universal force, they would be absolutely exhausted, immediately. And that is why, besides, they grow up; it is also because they receive more than they spend. And this does not correspond to any knowledge. It is a natural, spontaneous movement. It is the movement… a movement of joy in what they are doing — of joyful expenditure. One can do many things with that.”

Preparation and Training Needed to Consciously Draw on the Universal Vital Force

We recognise that there are ocean currents which circulate ocean water world wide and regulate the climate. We also recognise that there are air currents which we can partially observe through the soaring of birds who let the air currents carry them along, and experience directly if we are participating in the sport of hang gliding, or operating an air balloon or small airplane. Meteorologists refer to the jet stream and the movement of air in consistent patterns is a well-known and accept phenomenon, on which we rely and which we utilize constantly. There are also currents internal to the earth with the flow of molten magma which over time can change the speed of the spin of the world in space and shift the magnetic orientation of the planet as well. We recognise the movement of streams of energy from the sun and other sources of radiation in the universe.

A similar process of the movement of currents occurs at the vital and the mental levels of energy. We marvel at the synchronized flight of birds or swimming of schools of fish. In these cases, it is a vital force that connects all of them and they respond instantaneously, together, to create the mass movement patterns about which we marvel when we observe them.

When we stop to reflect we can observe the symbiotic vital existence between plants and trees and animals and humans. We breathe regularly and as we do so, we are taking in the elements of the air excreted by the plant kingdom, and in turn, they take in the elements excreted by us. We are thus all part of one large vital existence. Sometimes when we enter an old growth forest, we can feel a change in the energetic nature of the life that surrounds us and we may experience a feeling of awe, or consecration or deep peace that comes over us. There are also vital energies that circulate among human beings, which can create various emotional or vital states such as devotion, love, fear, hatred, consecration etc.

On the mental plane, similarly, there are patterns of thought that move as waves or currents and which thereby tend to influence and develop in the individuals who come in contact with them. We can experience this sometimes in a highly concentrated mental atmosphere such as in a library or research laboratory.

Once we recognise these patterns, we can systematically work to open ourselves to those we seek to bring into our lives. Certain practitioners of yoga, for instance, practice various forms of breath control, called pranayama, whereby they focus their state of awareness on the movement of the vital energies that they bring in and circulate within themselves and thereby can influence the thoughts, emotions, feelings and physical status. Special practices of this sort are not, however, absolutely necessary to draw upon the vital force; rather, a sense of openness and receptivity can provide the opportunity needed for these forces to act within one consciously, while it must be recognised that they are active all the time, at some level, whether we are consciously aware of it or not.

A disciple asks: “Sweet Mother, how can one draw on ‘the universal vital Force’? “

The Mother responds: “One can do it in many ways. First of all, you must know that it exists and that one can enter into contact with it. Secondly, you must try to make this contact, to feel it circulating everywhere, through everything, in all persons and all circumstances; to have this experience, for example, when you are in the countryside among trees, to see it circulating in the whole of Nature, in trees and things, and then commune with it, feel yourself close to it, and each time you want to deal with it, recall that impression you had and try to enter into contact.”

The Question of Possession of an Individual by Vital Beings

Once we acknowledge the idea that forces, beings or entities from the vital planes can act upon and through human individuals, the question then arises as to how we can identify this action and distinguish it from what we might call normal actions of a human being under the impulsion of the action of the gunas and the attempt to achieve certain objectives either presented to him by desire, or created in him through fear.

It is difficult to judge this action when it is minimal, lightly applied or within a range that could be attributed to human behavioral patterns generally. Where we can begin to recognise such an influence is under circumstances where the action seems to far exceed normal human boundaries, and has an outsized impact, beyond what could otherwise be expected. There also arises the issue of an advanced soul taking birth to manifest something new, or various other births that do not represent possession, per se, but more of an intervention or implementation of a particular stage of development.

With this understanding, it becomes almost impossible to distinguish such a possession when looking backwards at historical reports from the past about individuals who, indeed, seem ‘larger than life’ but whose actual lives are outside our ken.

We do have one instance that is within our current historical setting that has widespread documentation with audio and video footage extensively available, along with the first hand reports of numerous observers or people who had interactions with him, and that is the case of Adolf Hitler. By all accounts he was possessed by a demonic force that had a world-wide impact, causing massive suffering, destruction and chaos, led to the annihilation of many millions of people, and took control of much of the European continent during the time of his ascendancy.

Anyone listening to Hitler’s speeches, actually harangues, or observing film of his actions and speeches, can feel the force and the demonic influence he is representing. He was able, expressing the demonic force that possessed him, to bend the will of masses of people to do his bidding, even overcoming their normal reservations about the actions being taken. The being that possessed him actually wound up overwhelming the human instrument and destroying his psychology, and, when his achievement was denied, he turned on his own people and tried to bring utter destruction on them at the end.

In this case, we have both the impact of his action in the world, and the audio and video documentation to determine that there was an extreme demonic action taking place that went beyond the normal human scope. Observers in real time in the 1930’s and 1940’s confirmed the possession.

Possession by a vital being is also possible on a much smaller level, although clearly much more difficult to distinguish. An instance was reported where several individuals observed a leader of a group angrily denouncing one individual who was leaving the group. During this diatribe, two separate individuals reported seeing a form of an entity expressing itself over the face of the speaker, projecting itself as a dark, foreboding and angry being into the atmosphere of the group.

Sri Aurobindo observes: “The first thing that we have to note of importance to the problem preoccupying us is that these Forces in their action seem often to surpass the measure of human relativity; they are in their larger action superhuman, divine, titanic or demoniac, but they may create their formations in him in large or in little, in his greatness or his smallness, they may seize and drive him at moments or for periods, they may influence his impulses or his acts or possess his whole nature. If that possession happens, he may himself be pushed to an excess of the normal humanity of good or evil, especially the evil takes forms which shock the sense of human measure, exceed the bounds of human personality, approach the gigantic, the inordinate, the immeasurable.”

How to Acquire Knowledge of the Action of Vital and Mental Beings and Forces Upon our Lives

Since we cannot easily observe vital beings or mental beings operating on their respective planes to influence actions in our existence, and since we maintain a skeptical attitude about things which cannot be observed or measured, we find it difficult to accept the existence of conscious vital or mental beings, or entities, who either work to aid or oppose our existence, growth and development. It is also a well-recognised truth that the senses and the mind have a very limited frame of action so that things that occur above or below our field of perception, while still existent, are not perceived or understood. Thus, the sense organs and the mind are not the proper instruments to explore and understand the vital and mental realms outside the frame of their normal active capacity.

This brings us to the question of how we know what we know. We trust our external senses, but it has now been decisively proven that the senses, as well as our interpretation of perceptions of those senses, can be faulty, misled or outright wrong. Multiple people observing the same event from different angles frequently report different perceptions. With AI deepfakes in today’s world, and with programs such as photoshop what we believe is real is often simply a manipulated or falsified version of facts. Knowledge based on the external sense organs is therefore subject to question.

In The Life Divine, Sri Aurobindo describes the different ways of knowing, with the reliance on the outer sense organs as being incomplete due to it being knowledge of what appear to be separate objects. Separative knowledge is always incomplete, inadequate and limited.

If we rely solely on the testimony of others, we are still subject to their potentially faulty observation or interpretation. To the extent that we appreciate the bona fides and intelligence of individuals who have deeply immersed themselves in a subject, we have a greater degree of confidence potentially than simply relying on the random interpretations of untrained individuals. Even there, we frequently ask for some kind of proof or evidence, and, as scientists have developed the scientific method of knowledge, we expect that repeated observations should be not only verifiable and measurable, but also reproducible.

We then come to knowledge obtained through inference of an effect that must have a cause. We treat invisible energies such as radiation, electricity, etc. by judging the effect and then developing tools to measure the force that is at work. Thus, we believe in invisible things that can be identified through their impact and which yield measurable results.

All of this is preparatory to the ultimate form of knowledge, which is knowledge by identity. In the end, we must find a way to rely on what we experience, to filter out the effect of dogma, propaganda, and the influence of desire or fear, or other factors which can distort the perception or the interpretation. We come then to the science of inner psychological study and growth. Swami Vivekananda, in his lectures on Raja Yoga, provides one method for gaining knowledge inwardly, and that is to bring the ‘mind stuff’ to a level of stillness that we can observe closely. This discipline starts with gaining mastery over various psychological reactive states, through control of desire in any of its forms, and through development of a quiet, harmless and balanced ‘seat’. When ripples in the mind-stuff arise, we can observe where they came from, what impact they are having and what they try to do within us. Thus, we turn the mind itself into a sensitive measuring device for the action of external energies that impact us.

When we match up our inward experience through some process such as this, with the force and its impact that is reaching us, it becomes easier to develop a reliable sense of what is taking place behind the scenes, so to speak. When we then correlate our own experience with that of others who are otherwise trusted guides or leaders, we have a higher degree of certitude which we can apply to an understanding of the beings and forces trying to influence us, for good or ill. It is at such a stage that we can begin to fit together the pieces of the puzzle that is our incapacity to grasp the fact of our consciousness and the general human aspiration with the apparently inconscient Nature within which we exist.

Sri Aurobindo writes: “This is certain that when we go back into ourselves very deep away from the surface appearance, we find that the mind, heart and sensational being of man are moved by forces not under his own control and that he can become an instrument in the hands of Energies of a cosmic character without knowing the origin of his actions. It is by stepping back from the physical surface into his inner being and subliminal consciousness that he becomes directly aware of them and is able to know directly and deal with their action upon him. He grows aware of interventions which seek to lead him in one direction or another, of suggestions and impulsions which had disguised themselves as original movements of his own mind and against which he had to battle. He can realise that he is not a conscious creature inexplicably produced in an unconscious world out of a seed of inconscient Matter and moving about in an obscure self-ignorance, but an embodied soul through whose action cosmic Nature is seeking to fulfil itself, the living ground of a vast debate between a darkness of Ignorance out of which it emerges here and a light of Knowledge which is growing upwards towards an unforeseen termination. The Forces which seek to move him, and among them the Forces of good and evil, present themselves as powers of universal Nature; but they seem to belong not only to the physical universe, but to planes of Life and Mind beyond it.”

The Forces of Light and the Forces of Darkness Grapple for Supremacy in the World

In Paradise Lost, John Milton describes at great length the intentions and motivations of the fallen angels as described by the Christian tradition, and their attempt and need to influence and control the human world and thereby to defeat God’s intention and plan for humanity. This story is in fact not unique to the Christian tradition. Each culture, each tradition addresses the fight between those forces that have a vested interest in maintaining and perpetuating Darkness, Ignorance and Death and opposing the advent and growth of Light, Knowledge and Life. These universal tales arise from actual experiences that occurred to individuals, who clothe those experiences in the symbols and images of their own background.

An example occurred in the mid-1970’s, as privately reported and memorialized in writing contemporaneously with the event. An individual, a spiritual seeker dedicated to practice of yoga and focused on the growth of consciousness in the Light, awoke from a vivid, “real” dream-experience in a cold sweat, and in a state of utter exhaustion. He recounted how he had been confronted in what was more than a dream, but a real experience, by a being who took the shape and form and image of Adolf Hitler. The being apparently was not destroyed by Hitler’s demise, but simply abandoned Hitler and migrated into new forms and took up its project in new places, primarily in the United States, the ‘victor’ in the 2nd World War! They had a dispute and a long battle ensued, Eventually, the battle was won and the formation was defeated. That experience was so vivid that it stayed with the seeker for decades afterwards and he recognised that it was a transcription of an ongoing battle that would take place in his lifetime and of which he would necessarily be a participant to confront the force of darkness that was appearing in that form. He in fact sees corresponding elements in the Hitler force working still in today’s world and feels like this battle is still ongoing. Forces seeking domination, which use intimidation, bullying tactics, falsehood and propaganda to gain ascendancy are active in many parts of the world, seeking to undermine and control the world’s resources regardless of the impact on huge numbers of people and the environment itself, and reveling in the creation of suffering, fear and pain.

Sri Aurobindo notes: “The theory of this traditional knowledge is perfectly rational and verifiable by inner experience, and it imposes itself if we admit the supraphysical and do not cabin ourselves in the acceptation of material being as the only reality. As there is a cosmic Self and Spirit pervading and upholding the universe and its beings, so too there is a cosmic Force that moves all things, and on this original cosmic Force depend and act many cosmic Forces that are its powers or arise as forms of its universal action. Whatever is formulated in the universe has a Force or Forces that support it, seek to fulfil or further it, find their foundation in its functioning, their account of success in its success and growth and domination, their self-fulfillment or their prolongation of being in its victory or survival. As there are Powers of Knowledge or Forces of the Light, so there are Powers of Ignorance and tenebrous Forces of the Darkness whose work is to prolong the reign of Ignorance and Inconscience. As there are Forces of Truth, so there are Forces that live by the Falsehood and support it and work for its victory; as there are powers whose life is intimately bound up with the existence, the idea and the impulse of Good, so there are Forces whose life is bound up with the existence and the idea and the impulse of Evil. It is this truth of the cosmic Invisible that was symbolised by the ancient belief of a struggle between the powers of Light and Darkness, Good and Evil for the possession of the world and the government of the life of man; — this was the significance of the contest between the Vedic Gods and their opponents, sons of Darkness and Division, figured in a later tradition as Titan and Giant and Demon, Asura, Rakshasa, Pisacha; the same tradition is found in the Zoroastrian Double Principle and the later Semitic opposition of God and his Angels on the one side and Satan and his hosts on the other, — invisible Personalities and Powers that draw man to the divine Light and Truth and Good or lure him into subjection to the undivine principle of Darkness and Falsehood and Evil. Modern thought is aware of no invisible forces other than those revealed or constructed by Science; it does not believe that Nature is capable of creating any other beings than those around us in the physical world, men, beasts, birds, reptiles, fishes, insects, germs and anmalculae. But if there are invisible cosmic forces physical in their nature that act upon the body of inanimate objects, there is no valid reason why there should not be invisible cosmic forces mental and vital in their nature that act upon his mind and his life-force. And if Mind and Life, impersonal forces, form conscious beings or use persons to embody them in physical forms and in a physical world and can act upon Matter and through Matter, it is not impossible that on their own planes they should form conscious beings whose subtler substance is invisible to us or that they should be able to act from those planes on beings in physical Nature. Whatever reality or mythical unreality we may attach to the traditional figures of past human belief or experience, they would then be representations of things that are true in principle. In that case the first source of good and evil would be not in terrestrial life or in the evolution from the Inconscience, but in Life itself, their source would be supraphysical and they would be reflected here from a large supraphysical Nature.”

Conscious Powers of Light and Darkness Oppose One Another in the External World We Inhabit

Everywhere we look, whether in material Nature, or in the vital or mental domains, we see a play of forces, attraction and repulsion, centrifugal and centripetal, positive and negative, dark and light, etc. It appears to be a core principle of the creation to utilize these opposing forces to create the dynamic needed for a progressive evolution of consciousness. Opposition appears to strengthen the forces of growth. We find that trees and plants subjected to somewhat strong winds, for instance tend to root themselves more firmly.

What is not so obvious to us is the conscious intentionality behind the operation of these forces. This is mainly due to our limited viewpoint that treats what we cannot directly see and understand as simply a mechanism, rather than the actions and resultant impacts of conscious entities making conscious choices. We may experience various negative consequences in the world, we may become angry, enraged, lustful or otherwise extremely passionate and we simply treat this as a response to events that occur without specific conscious causation.

We can see, and in fact, often do learn about manipulation that takes place among human society, to pressure people into responding or acting in a certain manner. This is done through creation of fear, desire, pressure of various sorts, appeals to vanity, offers of fame, power, wealth or sex, and through false or misleading information. Rumor and gossip are also powerful means of dissemination of implied meaning that cause people to respond in very predictable ways generally. The pressure tends to create specific types of responses based on the Guna that is predominant in the situation.

It should not surprise us then, that it is possible, indeed likely, that beings who operate on another plane, such as the vital plane, would work to manipulate our responses for their own benefit or enjoyment. Since most people have little direct experience with beings on these other planes, they tend to disregard this potential source of what they experience in the outer world. That is however like saying that because we cannot see it, electricity has no impact. There are individuals who have had direct experience of vital beings and their interactions in the human world, and they report what could be expected based on what others see occurring in the outer world. In other words, just as electricity has a cause and an effect, so too do the vital or mental beings and their action have cause and effect.

We see in all the great religious traditions, and even in the great literature of the world, an individual or multiple individuals having such relations and interactions. Jesus was tempted by the devil. Buddha was confronted by Mara. Moses had direct interaction with God to free the Israelites from Egyptian slavery and to lead his people to Palestine and to establish the 10 Commandments to be followed by them. Zoroastrianism described the conflict between Light and Darkness. The Rig Veda told of the hiding of the light and the need to liberate it from the control of the forces of darkness. Hamlet was visited by the ghost of his father who drove him to action of revenge. Richard III of England was visited by the spirits of those he had wronged in his ascent to the throne. Brutus had an experience just prior to a decisive battle that evidenced the action of vital powers to undermine his confidence. The Puranas are filled with stories relating the interaction of various gods with human individuals to accomplish some purpose in the world. All of these forces are seen to act with conscious intention and to act upon situations, events, circumstances and individuals in the external world we inhabit and within which we live and act.

Sri Aurobindo observes: “There are forces, and subliminal experience seems to show that there are supraphysical beings embodying those forces, that are attached in their root-nature to ignorance, to darkness of consciousness, to misuse of force, to perversity of delight, to all the causes and consequences of the things that we call evil. These powers, beings or forces are active to impose their adverse constructions upon terrestrial creatures; eager to maintain their reign in the manifestation, they oppose the increase of light and truth and good and, still more, are antagonistic to the progress of the soul towards a divine consciousness and divine existence. It is this feature of existence that we see figured in the tradition of the conflict between the Powers of Light and Darkness, Good and Evil, cosmic Harmony and cosmic Anarchy, a tradition universal in ancient myth and in religion and common to all systems of occult knowledge.”
