“Belts will be on the line at New Jersey Duals this Saturday. 🔥”

Pennsylvania Wrestling Roundup

“Fire all of your guns at once and explode into space,” — Born To Be Wild, Steppenwolf.

Independence Day has long since passed, but those seeking fireworks won’t want to miss what promises to be a sure-fire wrestling spectacular on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Rockland Community College in Suffren New York

Crookham, Cerniglia, Ungar, Handlovic … Wow!

The three returning state champions and prohibitive favorite for the upcoming season have made their intentions known they will compete in the North Jersey Duals Battle for the Belt.

What a warmup!

Organizers of the event have long-term aspirations to grow the tournament and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) wrestling in the states of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania to great heights.

Their initial effort says so in a BIG way.

The tournament, which will be the first AAU folkstyle wrestling event in the three states in more than 25 years, is attracting top-caliber athletes. Twenty mats will be set for action as more than 40 teams and 500 wrestlers will converge for top-flight competition.

Among those set to participate are Pennsylvania state champions Ryan Crookham and Andrew Cerniglia of Notre Dame-Green Pond, New Jersey state champion Brett Ungar of North Hunterton Central and Pennsylvania state medalist Cole Handlovic of Bethlehem Catholic, who will be one of the favorites to win a state title in the upcoming season.

Crookham, who won his title as a freshman, Cerniglia and Unger will all compete for Notre Dame-Green Pond during the 2019-2020 season.

Competition will take place in three divisions — high school, middle school and elementary. There are 13 weight classes in the elementary division. 11 in the middle school division and 14 in the high school division.

Teams from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Florida and Connecticut are scheduled to participate.

The pool format, in which the winners of their pools will square off for titles which will award championship belts for those on the winning teams, will feature awards for the Outstanding Wrestlers in all three divisions and Most Falls in the Least Time awards.

The Jordan Burroughs Award will go to the high school division OW, while the Kyle Dake Award will be presented to the middle school OW and the Yianni Diakomihalis Award will go to the elementary school OW.

Burroughs, a New Jersey native and Olympic champion, was also an NCAA champion as were Dake and Diakomihalis.

The Wade Schalles Awards will go to those who post the most falls in the least time.

Schalles, a Pennsylvania state champion and NCAA champion, made pinning opponents an art form while competing a Clarion University.

Three AAU Districts will benefit from the event this year and for years to come. In addition to the more than 500 wrestlers committed to this year’s event, it is projected that more than 1,000 athletes will compete in 2020.

All the action-packed excitement will be live streamed on Track Wrestling.com.

New Jersey-based teams committed to the tournament’s high school division include Cimino Trained, Coop Trained/Apex Black, Cordoba Trained, Ganzo Trained, Iron Horse-Blue, Olympics Wrestling Club, SJR-NJ, South Jersey Elite, Team Howell, Team North Jersey, Red Nose Wrestling and Ultimate Wrestling Academy.

They will be joined by MPR and Red Hawk Elite/BECA from Pennsylvania, VHW-NY and GPS Wrestling Club from the New York Metro Area, Team Tugman of Connecticut and the Florida Jets.

Representing New Jersey in the middle school division will be Coop Trained/Apex, Edge Wrestling, Iron Horse, New Jersey Hit Squad, Olympics Wrestling Club, Red Nose Wrestling, New Jersey Psycho Squad and the Killa Bees.

Pennsylvania will send the Dark Knights, MPR-Blue and MPR-Green while Vougar will represent the New York Metro Area and Team Tugman will hail from Connecticut.
