Waffles

Mini waffle tower.

Waffles are an American staple, just like pancakes, for breakfast. This is a bit unusual for us Germans because we only eat waffles for dessert once in a blue moon and on the Christmas Market. Frankly, I don’t recall having waffles unless it was at the Christmas Market.

But, if you are in Rome do as the Romans, in this case, do as the Canadians when in Canada. Since we found a 4 in one (sandwich, grill, griddle, waffle plates) at Walmart the other day I though I should make some waffles soon. My husband is certainly not opposed to the idea and so I whipped up something today while talking to family back home.

I believe the recipe is similar to pancakes, just and egg or so more and a little different on how to whip it together. The recipe comes from “Nellie Lyle Pattinson’s Canadian Cook Book – Canada’s favourite for more than 50 years” edited by Helen Wattie & Elinor Donaldson Whyte, page 250.

Ingredients:

– 1 1/2 cup flour
– 1/2 cup skimmed milk powder
– 1 tbsp. baking powder
– 1/2 tsp. salt
– 2 tbsp. sugar
– 2 large eggs
– 1 3/4 cups water
– 4-5 tbsp. oil or melted butter

Combine the dry ingredients and in a separate bowl combine egg yolk, water and oil. Mix dry ingredients with egg yolk mixtures for about a minute. Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into the dough.

I need chocolate to start my morning.

I turned out to be a really nice and fluffy dough which was nice to pour as well. I used one full ladle for each piece. Make sure each waffle piece is well covered with dough and let it sit there until it stops sizzling and the steam ceases. I opened the waffle iron a couple of times to check the browning and had to flip it because there is a not so hot spot on the back.

Serve hot with whatever you like. Me: chocolate syrup. My husband: maple syrup and jam. I couldn’t be bothered to whip up some cream or cut the strawberries we had. I guess I was a bit too lazy for that.

It makes for a nice Saturday breakfast, just like pancakes do. But I won’t do this every weekend…not just yet.

Close ups of chocolate are even better.

    • Jazzy, I would have waffles every morning too, if I could. Well, you could make a big batch, freeze it and then put them in the toaster. Not quite like fresh waffles but close enough.
