Paper Making Workshop with Pat’s Schoolhouse

This week we had a series of paper making workshops with Pat’s Schoolhouse. Paper making is where we make paper from recycled materials.

First, a powerpoint presentation is conducted to discuss where paper comes from and how it is made, as well as why we should recycyle paper. Then the paper making process is shown to the children and they start making it with the help of the instructors and teachers.

The process is simple. The pulp (provided by us) is placed in a container and water is added to it. The mixture is then thoroughly mixed. The children are proved with a sieve and deckle to sift out the pulp from the mixture. Once that is done, they remove the deckle and place a cloth over it. After that, a chopping board is placed over it and the whole combination is turned over.

A squeegee is then used against the sieve to squeeze all the water out. This is done several times until most of the water has been squeezed out. The sieve is then gently lifted from the cloth and what remains is flattened pulp on the cloth. The cloth is brought out to dry in the sunlight

The workshop was conducted with several different Pat’s Schoolhouse schools and the preschoolers had allot of fun making paper from pulp. A number of them even wanted to do it a few more times and ended up making three or four pieces of paper. Even the teachers wanted to get in on the action and made a few as well!!!

Once the paper has dried completely, the paper will be sent to the different schools for the children and teachers to take home and show off their handiwork. We look forward to conducting more workshops with preschools and kindergarden as well.
