Ridden & Reviewed: A Follow-up On the 2013 Specialized Crosstrail
Mid-Summer.
Potentially a bike lovers favorite time of year. Sure there’s good riding abound. But for gear heads (like me) it also means that we start to see new bikes from the various bike companies out there.
I’m an equal opportunity observer of what’s allegedly the latest and greatest. Sure I have my favorites. But while I’ve been a roadie most of my riding life, and have become a passionate convert to cyclocross in the last 12 months, I like to take it all in.
It was in that spirit that I jumped at the chance to take the 2013 Specialized Crosstrail for a pre-release spin and review it here.
The sneak peak at the 2013 Specialized Crosstrail generated a lot of interest and a lot of questions. Now we know with the full release of the Crosstrail line-up.
My quick write-up and hastily shot pictures of that bike got a good response and numerous questions both here on It’s Time to Ride, at the shop on the sales floor, and on my email account.
Well, the 2013 Crosstrail is not only officially out, but we’re getting our first look at the complete line-up with all the specs for each model. And, many of the models are already in stock at Bicycle Sport Shop with the higher-end ones likely to land in Austin in August.

Pricing is on par with the 2012 models, with the exception of the new higher-end bikes, which have an expected retail price around over $1,000, similar to the Sirrus line-up on the asphault side of things.

I have been shopping for a couple of months now and thanks to your review and the link to the new models I have made a decision (finally). I am going with the Comp Disc. Love the color and the specs and it should just fit into the budget I have been granted by my Minister of War and Finance. 🙂

I am in the market for a new 29er, but, I have to confess that I use the bike most of the time in the city. Your review changed my mind, before, I have not thought about getting a hybrid one.
Do you have the weight of the Crosstrail Comp and the 2013 Carve Comp? Are they light?

Alexandre: I’m sorry I don’t have those weights, and Specialized doesn’t publish weights in their catalog or on their website. However, your local dealer may have those bikes in stock and they could likely weigh each of those models in your specific size. Good morning. Do you have the geometry of the XL 2013 Crosstrail? I’m trying to find a longer horizontal top tube bike (torso is longer compared to legs for 6 feet height). I’ve tried the Trek 8.5 DS (2012) 21″ and fits good for length however I have a 2010 Large Crossrtail that I love but just too small for me. By the way, is the remote lockout a big deal in your opinion? Thanks in advance for your comments.

The last page has a geometry chart which should have all the info you need to make the bike/size comparisons to find the right bike for you.
As for remote lockouts, I think that applies more on a dedicated MTB than a dual duty bike like the Crosstrail. That said, convenience is nice!

Thanks for sharing the link on the geometry and specs of the models. Plus, amazing response time! By the way, looks like the Pro model comes with remote lockout and has 2×10 gears – very good news for me because from what I can tell, my 24 speed is overkill and hs too much overlap. Probably over my budget but that’s usually how it goes…
Look forward to seeing the 2013 Crosstrail in the local store up here in Canada.

Hi from the UK. Just like to say thanks for the article, helped me make a few decisions on a new bike. My wife owns a 2011 Crosstrail sport which I preferred riding to my Rockhopper, when I read this article I sold the RH and ordered a 2013 CT “Expert” which I think is comparable to the US Comp. taking delivery early September, really looking forward to it. It’s a shame we’re not getting the white colour schemes though, mine is “graphite”.
