Two Favourite Churches

Fr Julian and Sr Diana CHN started us off in our blog series of ‘Favourite Churches’ to see their choice click here.  Now here are two more choices.

CarmelitesFirst of all from Fr Ken Leech who has recently begun worshiping with us. Fr Ken’s choice is: The Carmelite Chapel in Notting Hill, London.  At the heart of the busy city the enclosed sisters maintain a witness of stillness and silent prayer.

Fr Ken comments;  ‘The church is very integrated with Notting Hill and is very quiet and prayerful and the peaceful presence of Christ in the Reserved Sacrament pervades the atmosphere of the chapel.”

Fr Chris’ (assistant priest, St Chrysostom’s) choice is Steetley Chapel, near Worksop in Derbyshire.

steetley-chapelFr Chris writes ‘Steetley chapel was built in the mid twelfth century, and – praise God – it has hardly been touched by repairs or restoration so often inflicted on ancient churches.  For nearly a 1000 years this chapel has been a spiritual home for so many – it’s not grand, or overly ornate, but it is a “thin” place – a place where heaven and earth unite.

I was first introduced to this chapel as a teenager, and whenever I had the opportunity when living in Sheffield, not so far away, I would call in and “pay my respects” and say prayers.”

And the next two choices come from Africa – click here to see.

  1. And we have received this from the Carmelite Convent:

“Thank you so much for letting us know. We are delighted, of course, and
happy to be able to offer this quiet space in the middle of the city.

With the assurance of Carmel¹s prayer,

    Sr Mary of St Joseph
    Prioress”
