(Burbank)—Burbank’s Kaydon Spens landed the final blow in a 55-42 slugfest between the Bulldogs and the visiting Tustin Tillers on Friday night at Memorial Stadium in the first round of the CIF playoffs.
With a minute to play the Tillers, Noe Salas connected on a 46-yard field goal to make it a 49-42 contest. But the ensuing onside kick was taken 44-yards by Burbank’s Spens to paydirt to ice the contest.
The back and forth contest began with teams trading touchdowns in the first quarter and the Bulldogs taking a 28-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Tustin tied the contest again at the start of the third when Mike Meirez raced 39-yards to the end zone. It then took the lead on a Salas field goal from 30-yards.
Down by three the Bulldogs responded on both side of the ball.
Burbank quarterback, Matt Porras—( 4 touchdown passes) connected with Chadz Vang (3 touchdowns) for a 10-yard score to put the Bulldogs back on top 35-31.
The Burbank defense then provided breathing space when defensive back Louie Torres returned an interception 42-yards for a touchdown.
Tustin continued to counter punch out of it’s Wing-T offense with K.C. Carr scoring on a short-run…but the Bulldogs were able to stave them off at the end with Spens kick-off return closing the deal.
