1. The Clippers trade point guard Chris Paul to the Houston Rockets for seven players including guards Patrick Beverly and Lou Williams, forwards Sam Dekker and Montrezl Harrell and the 2018 first round pick.
2. The New York Knicks and Team President Phil Jackson mutually agreed to part ways Wednesday after a little more than three years.
3. “God forbid. Stupid Lebron needs to show some stinkin’ loyalty to someone besides himself. He made the big deal about going back home to Cleveland. Now he needs to stay there.”- Former Rosemead Girls Basketball Coach Jay Gauthier via Facebook on the notion of LeBron James coming to the Lakers.
4. Former Glendale High receiver Michael Davis is in the Los Angeles Chargers camp as a defensive back as an undrafted free agent.
5. Florida beats LSU 6-1 Tuesday night to complete a two-game sweep and capture the College World Series title.
6. Coming into Wednesday night’s action the Dodgers Cody Bellinger led the National League in home runs with 24.
7. The Chicago Cubs designated catcher Miguel Montero for assignment one day after he called out pitcher Jake Arrieta for allowing seven stolen bases in a 6-1 loss to the Washington Nationals.
8. Former Arizona Wildcat star Miles Simon has joined the Lakers as an assistant coach.
9. On this day in 1990 Fernando Valenzuela threw a no-hitter in the Dodgers 6-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. On the same day the Oakland A’s Dave Stewart no hit the Toronto Blue Jays.
10. “If you have a sombrero throw it to the sky!” – Dodger announcer Vin Scully when the final out was recorded on Valenzuela’s no-hitter.
Being an NBA player today requires only athletism? Please stop, players today are hands down more skilled than players in the 80s. Players today are more skilled in every facet of the game. They just also happen to be superior athletes as well.

I give credit to Wilt Chamberlain for that 33-game win streak and subsequent championship. You don’t win that many consecutive games without playing great defense, which requires extra effort, which the Big Dipper gave every night. As for Showtime, it was super exciting, but lasted only a few years, at which time the defenses had figured-out how to stop it. Defenses still know how to stop it, so Lonzo isn’t going to do what Magic did, but instead will remind people of a young Steve Nash or a present-day James Harden.
From MVS Staff: The Lakers won their first title with Magic in 1980 and they won their fifth title with Magic–which was called the “Showtime” era–in 1988. That’s roughly nine seasons…Nine seasons, nine years, is an eternity in professional sports–especially in the days when being an NBA player required something more than athleticism but an ability to play the game.
Jerry West is a good mind, but few remember Celtic &Lakers great Bill Sharman who created the showtime Lakers. He coached the ’72 Lakers to 33 consecutive wins, the only LA title for Wilt, traded for Kareem in ’76 and drafted Magic to start the dynasty.
Jerry West is proceeding to do everything right in Clipper Land, beginning with this Paul purging. This basketball guru has the ability to spot superstar talent BEFORE it becomes obvious to everyone, thereby getting top players on the cheap. As I’ve said before, L.A. basketball is now a duel between Magic and Jerry…may the best man win.
