Damien Opens Season with a “W”

(La Verne) – Damien played host to Chino to kick off the 2016 prep football season. After a first half that was plagued by turnovers, Damien took control in the second half to beat the Cowboys 21-6.

Both the Spartans and Cowboys failed to mount any consistent offensive drive early. Chino scored on a 78-yard run by Willie Morris with 25 seconds left in the second. After a failed extra point conversion, the Cowboys took a 6-0 lead at the half.

Damien took over in the second half, led by junior QB Warren Bryan. Bryan found a rhythm and opened up the passing game for the Spartans. Damien scored 21 unanswered to win by a final of 21-6.

  • Andrew Beeson led the rushing attack for the Spartans, rushing for 89 yards on 21 carries.
  • The Spartans Warren Bryan was 11/20 for 150 yards, 2 passing TD’s, 1 rushing TD.
  • Chino’s Willie Morris rushed for 95 yards on 8 carries, 1 rushing TD
  • Chino had three turnovers in its first four drives of the game. The most costly came at the Spartans 21 yard line.
  • Damien travels to Citrus College next week to face Glendora.
  • Chino is at Baldwin Park.
