The Eagle and Child, Oxford, Chippy Challenge #15   3 comments

cod and chips at Eagle and Child Oxford

[The Chippy Challenge: to eat more fish and chips in 2014; see original post for details.]

Fish: cod
Sides: chips and mushy peas
Evaluation: Typical Bird and Baby experience:

“How is everything?” the staff girl asked.
Wincing at the intrusion, I replied, “Meh. It’s alright.”
“Just alright?” she led, hoping for a correction.
“Well, since you insist, ‘alright’ was generous. The batter is good but the fish inside is dry and chewy, even rubbery. The chips taste raw and as if the potatoes are more suited to boiling. The peas are a delight, though, and if there had been more than a decorative spoonful the entire meal would have been greatly improved.”

She went into the kitchen while I finished up the 14 quid meal (£11 before the pint). No one emerged but her and that was just to return to the bar. They don’t care; they don’t have to. Tourists and those enamoured of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien will always keep the bar in profit.
Days since last: 2, (Cepen Park, Chippenham)
