The men’s and women’s crew teams dominated Bowdoin in their final dual-race action of the season on Saturday, while both also fell to perennial national power Trinity. The Cardinal women also improved to 9-3 in their last 12 races against Connecticut College with a resounding victory over the Camels. Action for both teams took place on Lake Quinsigamond in Pittsfield, Mass.

The women’s varsity eight boat of Elaine Lauriat ’09, Claire Tradewell ’11, Catie Steidl ’11, Emilie Kimball ’11, Becca Schofield ’11, Heather McCarrick ’12, Sofia Warner ’09, Beth Ogata ’09 and coxswain Sami Pop ’11 covered the 2,000-meter course in 7:37.4, well ahead of both Bowdoin (8:06.2) and Conn. College (8:17.1). Trinity took first in the race with a time of 7:23.8. The women’s second varsity eight covered the course in 8:21.3, well behind Trinity (7:55.5). Wesleyan also entered two novice eight boats; the Cardinals’ “A” boat finished in 8:04.0, well ahead of both Conn. College (8:11.8) and Trinity (8:19.2). Wesleyan’s “B” entry finished in 8:43.1.

Wesleyan finished the dual-race portion of its schedule 11-5, its best record since going 10-1 in 2001. The Cardinals also snapped a streak of six consecutive sub-.500 seasons.

The men’s varsity eight boat of Ross Heinemann ’09, Gael Hagan ’09, Charlie Weiss ’09, Elliott Skopin ’11, Terrence Word ’11, Gilder Keeler ’11, Parker Cook ’10, Ben Roberts ’09 and coxswain Jenny Moyer ’11 finished in 6:32.5, also well ahead of Bowdoin (6:49.0) but behind Trinity (6:21.8). The Cardinals’ second (7:00.8) and third (7:49.2) varsity eight boats also fell to Trinity (6:29.9 and 6:46.4, respectively). Wesleyan’s varsity four covered the course in 8:55.0, behind Bowdoin’s “A” boat (7:33.8), Conn. College (7:38.0), the Bowdoin “B” entry (7:39.3), Trinity (7:51.9) and Clark (8:06.7). The Cardinals’ novice four (8:24.7) fell to Trinity (7:19.4), WPI (7:42.5), Bowdoin’s “A” entry (7:49.9), and Clark (8:15.4) but banished Bowdoin’s “B” boat (9:00.8). The Cardinal men finished the dual-race season 7-3, its sixth straight year at .500 or better.

The race against Bowdoin was the first at the varsity eight level for both the Cardinal men and women.

Both teams return to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday for the New England Rowing Championships.
