The men’s and women’s track teams competed in the Coast Guard Invitational this past weekend, with the men finishing third out of 12 teams and the women 10th of 13. The host Bears dominated the men’s action, though Wesleyan had four second-place finishes. The Cardinal women also had a pair of third-place finishers.

Tommie Lark ’11 continued his dominance in the jumping events, taking second in the long jump (21’ 6”) and triple jump (46’ 11 3/4”), the latter of which provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championships. Alex Iwamoto ’12 had a seventh-place jump of 5-9 1/4 in the high jump. Mike Moody ’10 took second in the javelin with a long toss of 185-0, which is under four feet from the NCAA qualifying standard; he also took third in the hammer throw with a toss of 148-5. Derek Kuwahara ’09 took fourth in the discus (123-5), and Newman Hoffman ’09 (41-8) took fifth in the shot put.

Wesleyan also had strong showings in the running events; the 4×100-meter relay team of Iwamoto, Dan Manuyag ‘10, Jadeene Gabay ’10 and Lark took third with a time of 0:45.48, and the quartet of Chris Coleman ’10, Brad Litchfield ’09, Avinash Sridhar ’10 and Chris Foster ’09 took second in the 4×400 with a time of 3:29.06. Coleman clocked in at 0:51.65 in the 400-meter dash, and Foster (1:58.91) took third in the 800-meter run.

The Cardinal women did most of their damage in the running events. Julia Frieze ’12 had a third-place time of 1:01.40 in the 400m, while Lilly Fesler ’11 (1:03.87) finished seventh in the same event. Wesleyan also placed two in the 800m: Jessica Levin ’11 (fourth, 2:26.79) and Helen Dekorne ’12 (eighth, 2:30.13). Kiran Sheffrin ’10 placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.37, and the Cardinals’ 4×100 relay team of Sheffrin, Kathryn Kulowski ’11, Sukki Chham ’11 and Frieze finished in 0:54.70 for seventh. Wesleyan also received points from two jumpers; Fesler tied for sixth in the long jump (14-1 3/4), and Kulowski (33-5 3/4) finished sixth in the triple jump.

The men finished the event with 77 team points, while the women amassed 27.5. Both teams open their home schedule this weekend in the Elmer Swanson Invitational.
