Prominent Republicans and corporate employers have filed similar briefs in the past weeks in the Prop 8 or DOMA cases now before the U.S. Supreme Court, showing an ever increasing evolution and bipartisan support for marriage equality.

“The Administration’s brief should carry great weight with the Court.  The President of the United States has now made clear to the Justices of the Supreme Court that the United States Constitution prohibits Proposition 8’s exclusion of lesbian and gay couples from marriage.” said MEUSA™ Legal Director John Lewis.  “The already compelling case for the freedom to marry became even stronger today.”

“The Obama Administration’s words bring tremendous hope to same-sex couples seeking to marry in California; words that echo from coast to coast.  The arguments advanced by the Administration today add authority and eloquence to the case to restore marriage equality in California and extend the freedom to marry nationwide,” concluded MEUSA™ Executive Director Brian Silva.

AP has noted that: “The brief marks the president’s most expansive view of gay marriage and signals that he is moving away from his previous assertion that states should determine their own marriage laws.”
