Library Installation at MCO Joy: What The Teachers Said

Ever since Kibaki’s government initiated free primary education, our schools have had an all high attendance. Despite this, Kenya is facing a literary crisis with some of our districts being the lowest performing districts in East Africa. Reading is a simple, if not the only way of improving literacy in our schools. More than just going through the syllabus, students need to set aside time for reading stories. As Situma Mummba, a teacher at MCO Joy school says, “No education will take place without a library.”

The objective of Story for Chela campaign is to install 100 schools in public libraries by December 2015. Each library costs 300,000 thousand Kenya shillings to install. The campaign aims to raise 30Million Kenya shillings by rallying the pubic to contribute words to the first ever collectively written book by a nation. Each word costs 10shs. On 4^th of November, 2015 Start a Library’s #StoryForChela successfully installed the first library at MCO Joy school in Mathare.
