#LAAPFF15: Lucretia Stinnette’s QUYEN unspools at the Japanese American National Museum on April 28

Quyen, a dramatic short written and directed by Lucretia Stinnette, will unspool on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 9:30 PM at the Japanese American National Museum, 100 N. Central Ave Los Angeles, CA 90012, featured in the 31st Annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Tickets are $14 for General Admission, $12 for members, students and seniors and are available at the festival’s website.

Quyen tells the story of a young Vietnamese woman in the first week of her arranged marriage in rural South Korea. Isolated from friends, family and the conveniences of city life, the weather and the living conditions are not the only things that are harsh for Quyen, who understands neither the language nor the culture. The reality of life with a disabled husband and his critical mother are not what she imagined when she emigrated for a better life. A visit from a childhood friend involved in the seedier parts of Seoul’s nightlife provides a peek into a world of financial freedom and introduces Quyen to options that she never knew that she had. Suddenly faced with options in what was a seemingly bleak situation, Quyen must choose between the choices that we make for family, survival and happiness. Shot in location in Korea and in Korean (with English subtitles), Quyen has garnered a number of accolades. It was an official selection for the New Orleans Film Festival, the Munich International Festival of Film Schools, the Newport Beach Film Festival and the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. It was also an official selection at the UCLA Director’s Spotlight in 2014, where it won the KQED Film School Shorts Best Film Award. The writer and director, Lucretia Stinnette is in her final year of UCLA’s MFA Directing Program where she has won a number of awards for her work. Stinnette is the recipient of the 2014 Princess Grace Graduate Film Scholarship, the Lynn Weston Fellowship in Film, the Women in Film Foundation/Verna Fields Memorial Fellowship and the Four Sisters Scholarship in Directing. In addition, Stinnette is a regular contributor and producer of online content and has produced media for Mountain Dew, New Castle and the will.i.am Angel Foundation. Lia Chang is an actor, a performance and fine art botanical photographer, and an award-winning multi-platform journalist. Lia has appeared in the films Wolf, New Jack City, A Kiss Before Dying, King of New York, Big Trouble in Little China, The Last Dragon and Taxman. She has guest starred on “One Life to Live,” “As the World Turns,” and “New York Undercover.” Lia starred as Carole Barbara in Lorey Hayes’ Power Play at the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, N.C., with Pauletta Pearson Washington and Roscoe Orman. She is profiled in Jade Magazine.
