Hum kaale hain to kyaa hua dilwaale hain

Posted on: October 23, 2008

Here is an out and out tapori song that became an out and out evergreen classic song, and an iconic song if ever there was one.

I am sure when this song first appeared on the air waves, it must have taken everyone by storm. Listening to this audio itself is such a wonderful exhilarating experience, and when one watches the video of the song, the roof has no option but to fall down.

“Gumnaam” was a suspense movie, and a well made one. Inspired by an Agatha Christie novel and a US TV serial, this movie became successful. In addition, comedy of Mehmood, which was original was a huge draw for this movie.

In fact, Mehmood’s comedy and Rafi’s song “hum kaale hain to kya hua dilwaale hain” may have done more to make this movie a success than the hamming by Manoj Kumar, the hero of this movie.

As I earlier mentioned, the popularity of this song is something almost surreal. This song had caught public imagination, and in fact the term ” hum kaale hain to kyaa hua dilwaale hain” became a popular phrase in day to day conversation.

This song also popularised Hyderabadi lingo no end. Mehmood mannerisms as a Hyderabadi made him so popular that Mahmood indeed became a bigger draw than the hero in the movies where he acted.

So here is this phenomenally popular song sung by Rafi. And let us not forget the contributions of the lyricist (Shailendra) and the music directors ( Shankar Jaikishan) who were not only at the peak of their prowesses, but who were the undoubted leaders in their fields.

And let us cheer Helen too, who dances alongwith Mahmood in this song, and does a great job as always.

Song- Hum kaale hain to kya hua dilwaale hain (Gumnaam ) (1965) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD- Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

khayalon me
khayalon me
khayalon me

jai hungama
kaale se dar gaye kya

hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen tere tere tere chaahne waale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain

ye gore gaalaan tandaanaa
ye reshmi baalaan tandaanaa
ye solaa saalaan tandaanaa
haay tere Khayaalaan tandaanaa
ye gore gaalaan tandaanaa
ye reshmi baalaan tandaanaa
ye solaa saalaan tandaanaa
haay tere Khayaalaan tandaanaa
hamen tere tere tere chaahne waale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen tere tere tere chaahne waale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain

tumen kidhar ko jaataain tandaanaa
kyuun paas na aataain tandaanaa
jaanmaar ye bataan tandaanaa
dil tod ye ghaataan tandaanaa
tumen kidhar ko jaataain tandaanaa
kyuun paas na aataain tandaanaa
jaanmaar ye bataan tandaanaa
dil tod ye ghaataan tandaanaa
hamen tere, tere, tere chaahnewaale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen tere tere tere chaahne waale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain

aankhaan naarangi ki phaankaan
baataan jyuun aise saarangi
chaalaan jaise mast sharaabi
haalat rang-birangi

hamen maanaa ghareeb hain tandaanaa
soorat se ajeeb hain tandaanaa
par phir bhi naseeb hain tandaanaa
ke tere kareeb hain tandaanaa
hamen maanaa ghareeb hain tandaanaa
soorat se ajeeb hain tandaanaa
par phir bhi naseeb hain tandaanaa
ke tere kareeb hain tandaanaa
hamen tere tere tere chaahne waale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen tere tere tere chaahne waale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain
hamen kaale hain to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain

Indeed, it is a timepass song, as well as an evergreen song, all rolled into one.

Wonderful!

Another farmaish please. It’s “Taxi kal raat sadak pe” from Chhaila Babu (1977) with Kaka and Zeenat, MD – Laxmikant Pyarelal). It has Padma Khanna doing her stuff with Kaka 🙂

I have begun my search for his song. This appears quite an elusive song.

Mehmood in his striped lungi 🙂

What a fun song this is.

This song’s popularity resulted in other Mehmood songs in either dream sequence or with lungi or some such chatpata number 🙂

Like “Mehbooba mehbooba” in Sadhu aur Shaitan

Then there was “Batkamma batkamma” from Shatranj.

And to some extent also
“Jogi O Jogi” in Lakhon Mein Ek
“Naach meri Jaan” in Main Sundar Hoon

Moreover, this Mahmood dance was copied by Amitabh Bachchan two decades later ! Do not believe me? Look at the song “khatoon ki khidmat mein” in this blog.

Very few of us know there is an English version of the this song “the she I love” sung by Rafi Sahab. Anohter English song by Rafi Sahab was “Remember friend the world is one” on the tune of “Baharoon Phool Barsao”. Both songs are worth listening.

Same song by Jr. Mehmood in Brahmachari-68. Just see how smartly this Jr. has tried to be like his Guru. Too good!
