“Lekh”(1949) was directed by G Rakesh for Liberty Art Productions, Bombay. The movie had Suraiyya, Sitara, Motilal, Ishu Jaagirdaar, Cuckoo, Anand Pal, Suraiyya Chaudhry, Sudhir, Gurudasram, Chamam Puri, Ameena Bai, Rekha, Sarita Veer, Kanwal, Vats, Pittoo, Atma Prakash etc in it.

This movie had 15 songs in it. Nine songs from the movie have been covered in the blog in the past.

Here is the tenth song from “Lekh”(1949) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Krishn Dayal.

This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle in a singing style prevalent in those days which was much different from her trademark singing style that she would later develop .

I have not been able to get a few words (even sentences) in the lyrics. I request our knowledgeable readers to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections in the lyrics.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-O baabu aabaad rahega duniya ka ye mela (Lekh)(1949) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-Krishn Dayal

Lyrics

o baabu
o baabu
aabaad rahega duniya ka ye mela
o baabu
aabaad rahega duniya ka ye mela
koi sang rahe preetam ke
koi sang rahe preetam ke
koi rahe akela
o baabu
aabaad rahega duniya ka ye mela

yahi roopsi(?0 pyaar ki aankhen (?)
tu kyun aankh churaaye
yahi roopsi(?) pyaar ki aankhen (?)
tu kyun aankh churaaye
ye jaadu ka khel hai baabu
jo maange mil jaaye
ye jaadu ka khel hai baabu
jo maange mil jaaye
har panchhi ne saathi dhoondha
tu kyun ude akela
har panchhi ne saathi dhoondha
tu kyun ude akela
o babu
aabaad rahega duniya ka ye mela
o babu
aabaad rahega duniya ka ye mela

aakar chale na jaayen raaja
chale na jaayen raaja
pyaar ke din rangeele
aakar chale na jaayen raaja
chale na jaayen raaja
pyaar ke din rangeele
dilwaalon ko mile mohabbat
khade rahe sharmeele
dilwaalon ko mile mohabbat
khade rahe sharmeele
roop(?) se aankh churaane waale
kis jogi ka chela
roop(?) se aankh churaane waale
kis jogi ka chela
o baabu
aabaad rahega duniya ka ye mela
o baabu
aabaad rahega duniya ka ye mela

Atulji,

Missing words of the fist lines are
mili roop se pyaar ki aankhen
tu kyun aankh churaaye

trying to get other missing words…

roop se aankh churaane waale
kis jogi ka chela …. sounds right.

Ashaji’s voice is hard to recognize as she sounds more like Geetaji.

Regards
