Le Lo Ji Le Lo Mera Dil Le Lo

Today, 6th July, is the remembrance day of music director Sardul Kwaatra, who passed away this day in 2005. Four years ago, on this occasion, I have posted a detailed article on this ‘impressive and talented composer who failed to impress’ with the song “Aa Gaye Aa Gaye Aa Gaye”.

In that article, I had also made a statement that ‘. . . the wonder is the treasure that is hiding in the obscure, unheard songs that simply did not come to the attention of the listening public for many a reason.’ That being true for so many a song lying hidden beneath the sands of time, today I bring yet one more obscure delightful gem from this music director, from the film ‘Tees Maar Khan’ (1955). Amongst all the listed films of Sardul Kwatra, this is the only film that was not yet represented on our blog so far. Well, that changes today, and this film now makes its debut here.

The melody and the rhythm of this song is so catchy, that it is a surprise that it has remained obscure for so long. As I was sifting through the song lists of this music director, I recently came to hear this song for the first time, and just fell in love with it.

The lyrics are from the pen of Prem Dhawan. The singing voices are those of Geeta Dutt and Shaminder. For those who may not have heard about Shaminder –

Shaminder hailed from a rich family of landlords in Punjab. Unlike the rest of his kinsmen, he had a deep interest in music and singing. His family disliked this hobby, and never encouraged him for anything in this direction. I quote a brief passage from an interview of him, that is posted on the Cineplot website.

Born in a village in East Punjab, Shaminder hails from a well-to-do family which was prejudiced against his joining films. But, since childhood, he had an urge to sing and after successfully crooning for H.M.V and the Delhi and the Jullunder stations of A.I.R. he landed in Bombay in search of a ‘break’ for his talents.

Shaminder has had the privilege to work with some of our well-known music directors including Roshan, Sardul Kwatra and Shankar Jaikishan.

Shaminder was active in films till the first half of 1960s, appearing in films like ‘Aas Ka Panchhi’ and ‘Anpadh’. After this brief stint in Bombay, it appears that he simply returned to his village and his farmlands, and we hear no more about him.
[Ed Note: For reader’s information, a more detailed article about Shaminder has already been posted on the blog by our dear Sadanand ji, in the write up for the song “Ye Thhandi Hawaa Rangeen Fiza“.]

Let us listen to this wonderful song of a playful tete-a-tete between lovers. As usual, it is all of three minutes – that’s all it takes for the lady to accede and express her consent for the emotional bonding. Lovely song, lovely music and lovely rendering. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Le Lo Ji Le Lo Mera Dil Le Lo  (Tees Maar Khan) (1955) Singer – Shaminder, Geeta Dutt, Lyrics – Prem Dhawan, MD – Sardul Kwaatra

Lyrics

le lo ji le lo mera dil le lo
le lo ji le lo mera dil le lo
thoda sa pyaar de do
meri kasam
na na ji aisa sauda kaun karey
aur yun hi kaun marey
jaao balam
le lo ji le lo mera dil le lo
thoda sa pyaar de do
meri kasam
na na ji aisa sauda kaun karey
aur yun hi kaun marey
jaao balam
le lo ji le lo mera dil le lo

aise na chhedo hamen aa ke
sheeshe mein munh to dekho jaa ke
aise na chhedo hamen aa ke
sheeshe mein munh to dekho jaa ke
surat huzoor ki
jaise langoor ki
dekh ke tum ko mera nikle hai dam
hey..y..y
le lo ji le lo mera dil le lo
thoda sa pyaar de do
meri kasam
na na ji aisa sauda kaun karey
aur yun hi kaun marey
jaao balam
le lo ji le lo mera dil le lo

pehle aankhon se dil tolo
khota hai khara phir bolo
sauda bura nahin
khona na dil kahin
muft mein bikte hain tere liye hum
hey..y..y
le lo ji le lo mera dil le lo

dekhe ji kaun jhoothe sapne
hum to chale ji ghar apne
jaao na aise daghaa de ke
mar jaaunga main phaansi le ke
is taqraar mein
is inkaar mein
chhupa hai pyaar mere pyaare balam
ho..o..o
le lo ji le lo mera dil le lo
thoda sa pyaar de do
meri kasam
na na ji aisa sauda kaun karey
aaa haa
aur yun hi kaun marey
o ho
jaao balam
le lo ji le lo mera dil le lo
haa haa haa haa

Shaminder was lucky to sing a duet with Gaan-Saraswati Lata-ji, under the baton of Roshan.
