Today (30 october 2016) is deepaawali, the festival of lights. It is the ninth deepaawali for this blog. How time has flown ! And it is quite heartening to realise that this blog is still around and the core group of regulars of this blog have stuck around.

All well known deepaawali songs that one may listen to on radio and TV have already been discussed in the blog during the past eight deepaawali occasions. The songs that we will discuss in this and the future deepaawali occasions are song that few people may have heard before. They are rare songs now, but these songs must have been quite popular during their time before time took its toll on them.

The first deepaawali song of the day is from “Phool”(1945). This obscure movie was directed by K Asif for Famous Films, Bombay. The movie had had Veena, Sitara, Prithviraj Kapoor, Suraiyya, Durga Khote, Sitara Devi, Wasti, Yakoob, Ashraf Khan, Mazhar Khan, Dixit, M Ismail, Agha Jaan , Jillobai etc in it.

There were eleven songs in the movie. One of these songs has been discussed in the past.

This second song from “Phool”(1945) is a deepaawali song. The song is sung by a female singer and chorus. HFGK is silent about the identity of the singer. The uploader has mentioned the singer as Shamshad Begam, though the voice does not sound like her to me.

Lyricist is not known either. Music is composed by Ghulam Haider.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the identity of the singer as well as on the picturisation of this nice song.

I have not been able to get the lyrics right at a few places. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections in the lyrics wherever applicable.

The audio is not of a very good quality but this is the best that we have. so unless a better version of this song is available, we have to make do with this copy which appears to be a recording from a radio broadcast of SLBC.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy, prosperous and safe festival of deepaawali.

Song – Kya Kehne Tere Deewaali Raani (Phool) (1945) MD – Ghulam Haider, Lyricist – [Unattributed], Singers – Unidentified Female Voice, Chorus

Lyrics

aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
kya kehne
aa aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa
kya kehne
kya kehne
kyaa kehne
deeewaali raani ho
tere kya kehne
ho deeewaali raani ho
tere kya kehne

dulhan bani hai aaj duniya
haa haa haa haa haa
dulhan bani hai aaj duniya
haa haa haa haa haa
bani thhani hai duniya
haa haa haa
pehne jagmag karte gehne
pehne jagmag karte gehne
ho deewaali raani ho tere kya kehne
ho deewaali raani ho tere kya kehne

galey mil mil ke deepak muskuraayen
milan ka din hai
ye hamko bataayen
chali hai raat
chali hai raat
chali hai raat
pooja ko
liye aakaash ki thhaali
chhamaachham aayi deewaali
ho o o
aayi deewaali
hoy
chhamaachham aayi deewaali
ho o o
aayi deewaali
aa aa aa aa
kya kehne
aa aa aa aa aa aa
kya kehne
kya kehne
kya kehne
deewaali raani ho tere kya kehne
ho deewaali raani ho tere kya kehne

banaa hai aaj duniya per
naya ye aasmaan kaise
nikal aaya
sitaaron ka
zameen pe kaarwaan jaise
aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa aa
chhama chham aayi deewaali
ho o aayi deewaali
hoy
chhama chham aayi deewaali
ho o aayi deewaali

o re deepak
muskuraate hain
ke jugnu jagmagaate hain
ke pariyaan naachne aayin
damakti choliyaan pehne
wo naachen chham chham chham
phar phar gaayen
sa re ga ma pa dha ma ga re sa
ma ga re sa
koi ruke to bal khaaye
koi apne se sharmaaye
haaye
koi ruke to bal khaaye
koi apne se sharmaaye
jawaani apni duniya par lutaane
aaj hain shaide

Atul ji,

What a fabulous, melodious song. It was sitting in my collection, but not heard before.

I have a much cleaner version, and it has helped to clarify the lyrics completely. The lyrics are now updated.

The song has a few ‘alaap’ lines sung by a female singer, and the rest of the entire song is sung by a chorus of singers.

In the version I have, the source person has indicated the voice as Suraiya and chorus. On listening, I feel that this voice is not Suraiya either. I request other people to please comment on this.
