“Heera Moti”(1959) was based on Munshi Premchand’s story “Do Bailon Ki Katha”. This is a story of two bullocks owned by a poor farmer couple.

The story is told from the point of view of the bullocks.

The movie was produced by Pravin Desai and directed by Krishan Chopra for Rupalaya production. The movie had Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy, Baby Naaz,Helen, Cuckoo, Ashim Kumar, Shubha Khote, P.Kailash, Rashid Khan, Baij Sharma, Moolchand, Charubala, Bhola etc in it.

I had provided the story in detail while discussing another song from the movie. Here the story again:

In this story, Premchand tells us about two bulls ,called Heera and Moti, who live with a farmer and his wife. the farmer treats them well, but his wife is inconsiderate and ill treats them. The wife sends the two bullocks to her maika to work in the fields of her brother. Her brother also maltreats the bulls. Unable to take the ill treatment, they escape from his house and come back to their original home. The wife is obviously not amused and gets them sent back to her brother’s place once again, where they are subjected to more torture. Unable to take it any longer, they escape once agin. This time, they are rounded up by the stray cattle department officials. Needless to say, they are ill treated there too, and finally they are put up for auction and they are bought by one kasaai (slaughterer). When the sluagerer is taking them with him to the slaughter house, the two bulls realise that they are passing through familiar surroundings. They realise that they are passing though the village of their owner. The two of them escape and end up infront of the house of their owner. The slaughterer comes running behind them and demands the bulls back, saying that they belong to him. The owner points out that the bulls have come before him and are standing there on their own volition, which is enough proof that they belong to him. When the slaughterer tries to argue, the bulls charge at him and chase him till the outskirts of the village. The wife of the owner comes out and hugs the two bulls. So all ends well.

There were six songs in “Heera Moti”(1959). Five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the sixth and final song from “Heera Moti” (1959) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata, Hemant Kumar and chorus. Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Roshan.

The song is a joyous song that shown Nirupa Roy and Balraj Sahni, alongwith others harvesting their crop and singing this song on this happy occasion.

With this song, “Heera Moti”(1959) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Atul ji,

What a song, what melody. I have been waiting for this song to appear.

At a get together at Kushal ji’s place, during our last visit to Bombay, this song figured prominently in a discussion on favourites. This song stands right up there with icons such as “Hariyala Saawan Dhol Bajaata Aaya”, “Matwaala Jiyaa Doley Piya”, “Dekho Re Aaya Mausam Suhaana”, and “Mere Desh Ki Dharti Sona Ugley”, in term of songs that are associated with the soil and the farms of this land – much like the series initiated by Avinash ji – ‘Desh Ki Mitti Ki Khushboo’.

Fantastic song, thanks for posting.

This song is composed by Salil Chowdhury, NOT by Roshan. While composing the music Roshan had to go overseas for medical treatment, consequently he ran out of time to finish the music score for the movie producers. Therefore he requested his friend Salil to finish the song for him!

You are right about the MD I think. Well-known web site on Salil ji mentions that this song is composed by him. In fact, it says that the original version which was composed before this song is in Bengali (?) but was never released.
@Atul ji / Arun ji, please verify the info.

The song ‘nach re dharti ke pyare’ was composed by Salil Chowdhury and not by Roshan who was the music director of the film. The song has Salilda mark all over it. So i checked with Gautam Chowdhury who has researched the work of Salilda and he confirmed that it is indeed his composition.
