In the 1950s, many new female singers joined Hindi film industry to try their luck in making their careers in playback singing. Many of them went into oblivion after a couple of years or so. Playback singing career of a few of them like Seeta Kalyanpur, Suman Purohit ended with one or two films. A few others like Meenal Wagh (11 songs during 1950-54), Kaumudini Munshi (10 songs during 1954-68) could remain connected with Hindi film music for longer period but their singing output was low. While some of them may not have pursued the playback singing career due to personal reasons, there is no doubt about the fact that with the emergence of Lata Mangeshkar in early 50s along with established playback singers like Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begum, the newcomers faced tough competition from them.

Madhubala Jhaveri was one of those newcomers of the 1950s who could extend her carreer as a playback singer in Hindi film industry for a longer period (active years 1951-1961) along with Suman Kalyanpur (1954- 1985), Kamal Barot (1957-1975) and Meenu Purushottam (1959-1992). Still their output in terms of number of songs was no match with that of their contemporary top two female playback singers.

Here is a brief profile of Madhubala Jhaveri which I have condensed from an article in Gujarati written by Biren Kothari:

Madhubala Jhaveri (19/05/1935 – 11/09/2013) was born in Girgaon, Mumbai to Vanjeewan Jhaveri and Heerabai. She learnt music from her mother and aunt Shyamla Mazgaonkar. She completed M.A. from SNDT University, Mumbai and completed Sangeet Visharad from the same university.

Madhubala Jhaveri recorded her first song for the film ‘Bhoole Bhatke’ (1952) under the baton of music director Manohar Arora. However, the film was delayed and her first film to be released was ‘Rajput’ (1951) in which she sang 4 songs under music director Hansraj Bahl. Later on, she sang for Hansraj Bahl the most number of songs during her association with him (1951-55).

In 1958, she married Madan Mohan Chawla and by that time, her carrier as a playback singer in Hindi film industry was on a declining trajectory. By the start of 60s, her carrier in Hindi films was virtually ended. After she sang in ‘Apsara’ (1961) and ‘Murad’ (1961), her next and the last film was ‘London Express (1968). However, she continued to sing for Marathi films and also a few Gujarati films.

Madhubala Jhaveri sang around 100 songs in 52 Hindi films. Out of them, as many as 42 songs in 13 films were under the music direction of Hansraj Bahl. One can say that Hansraj Bahl was her mentor in shaping her playback singing career. There are some interesting facts about the association of Madhubala Jhaveri with Hansraj Bahl during 1951-55. They are:

1. Lata Mangeshkar sang only 2 songs for Hansraj Bahl during 1951-55. In fact, Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum and even Asha Bhonsle sang more songs for Hansraj Bahl than Lata Mangeshkar during this period.

2. Once Madhubala Jhaveri’s association with Hansraj Bahl came to an end in 1955. Lata Mangeshkar sang for him in films like ‘Rajdhani’ (1956), ‘Changez Khan’ (1957), ‘Milan’ (1958), ‘Saawan’ (1959) etc. In the 1960s and thereafter, Hansraj Bahl was mostly associated with B grade films. During 1955-61, Madhubala Jhaveri sang mostly for B grade movies.

3. Madhubala Jhaveri had no occasion to sing for almost all the top and second sting music directors of her time such as Anil Biswas, Naushad, S D Burman, Roshan, Madan Mohan, O P Nayyar. She sang only one song each for C Ramchandra and Shankar-Jaikishan.

From the above analysis, it is clear that Hansraj Bahl was no O P Nayyar. Like-wise, Madhubala Jhaveri was no Suman Kalyanpur who could sustain herself in Hindi film industry for much longer time than the former. Probably, she was a victim of the circumstances obtaining at that time in Hindi film music. In the process, the budding playback singing career of Madhubala Jhaveri virtually came to an end in Hindi film industry by 1961.

The lovers of Hindi film music lost an opportunity to listen to more of her songs in a different texture of voice.

I am presenting one of Madhubala Jhaveri’s rare songs ‘dekho dekho dilwaalon dil apna bachaa lo’ from an obscure film ‘HERO NO. 1 (1959). The song is written by Muzaffar Shahjahanpuri which is set to music by Iqbal. The film was produced under the banner of Jawahar Films and was directed by Sultan. It was action film comprising the star cast of Kamran,, Naazi, Neeru, Sham Kumar, Leela Gupte, Habeeb, Shaikh, Chandbala, Heera Sawant, Tun Tun etc.

The film has 5 songs, none of which has so far been represented in the Blog. In fact, to the best of my efforts, I could not locate any of the songs of the film on YT until I uploaded the song under discussion.

Enjoy this peppy song in the voice of Madhubala Jhaveri.

Song – Dekho dekho dilwaalo dil apna bacha lo (Hero No. 1) (1959) Singer – Madhubala Jhaweri, Lyrics – Muzaffar Shahjahaanpuri, MD – Iqbal

Lyrics

dekho dekho dilwaalo
dil apna bachaa lo
main teer chalaati hoon
meri aankhon mein jaadoo
meri baaton mein jaadoo
main chain churaati hoon
dekho dekho dilwaalo
dil apna bachaa lo
main teer chalaati hoon
meri aankhon mein jaadoo
meri baaton mein jaadoo
main chain churaati hoon

naach mera qayaamat dhhaaye
saari mehfil ka dil tadpaaye
naach mera qayaamat dhhaaye
saari mehfil ka dil tadpaaye
saari mehfil ka dil tadpaaye
suno paayal kaa gaana
chhum ta naa naa naa naa naa
main hulchul machaati hoon
meri aankhon mein jaadoo
meri baaton mein jaadoo
main chain churaati hoon

kaali kaali laten naagin hain
ye to zehar bhari qaatil hain
kaali kaali laten naagin hain
ye to zehar bhari qaatil hain
ye to zehar bhari qaatil hain
in se pyaar na jataana
in ko haath na lagaana
main zehar pilaati hoon
meri aankhon mein jaadoo
meri baaton mein jaadoo
main chain churaati hoon

badi qaatil meri har adaa hai
ye sitam hai balaa hai kazaa hai
badi qaatil meri har adaa hai
ye sitam hai balaa hai kazaa hai
ye sitam hai balaa hai kazaa hai
dekho dhokha na khaana
jaan apni bachaana
main nishaana banaati hoon
meri aankhon mein jaadoo
meri baaton mein jaadoo
main chain churaati hoon
dekho dekho dilwaalo
dil apna bachaa lo
main teer chalaati hoon
meri aankhon mein jaadoo
meri baaton mein jaadoo
main chain churaati hoon

Radio Ceylon announced on September 16, 2013 that popular playback singer Madhubala Jhaveri(Chawla) had passed away on September 11. The lady announcer said that although they got the news earlier but they were withholding it to confirm its authenticity. It is a pity that when such a popular singer of yester-years passed away none from the print and electronic media within the country broke this news. Once again it was left to Radio Ceylon to tell us about the demise of one of our great singers.
Madhubala Jhaveri also sang for Shankar-Jaikishen in a hit RK film-Boot Polish. She sings along with Asha and Manna Dey the song, ‘Theher zara o jaane wale babu mister gore kale, kab se baithe aas lagaye hum matwale polish wale’

Sadanandbhai,
You do not disappoint again, in the researchful write-ups, or selection of songs. (for a change, why not try sometime?)
Nitinbhai,
Dekho Chanda (1952) by Madhubala Zaveri, is ditto in tune from the same music director Hansraj Bahl, who used the tune in 1949, with Lataji’s voice in Punjabi film ‘Lachchhi’ (naale lammi te naale….)

Sadanand ji

An unexpectedly fabulous song. Or rather, this the kind of gems we do expect to uncover when we go searching into the the unknown and obscure B and C grade films. Thanks for the song as well as the detailed article.

I have made the corrections to the lyrics above.
(??) = ‘saari mehfil’

Also, in the 3rd antaraa, the words
‘is’se tang hai’ should read ‘ye sitam hai’.

Also, I have added lyrics in Hindi.
