Morey Mann Ki Baat Haaye Kahi Na Jaat

Today’s date is an important date.  Two very unique artists share this date as their birth anniversary.  Two artists who have made some of the most memorable contributions to the Hindi film song and music.  The two names are Sajjaad Husain Sb, music director par excellence and Suraiya, the singer with an enchanting voice and an unmatchable repertoire of renditions.

On the dot, Mahesh ji’s reminder email was there early morning.  As was Atul ji response – that all creations of Sajjaad Sb that are traceable, are already on the blog, and locating another song created by him is going to be nothing short of a miracle, and that the situation in the case of Suraiya is almost similar, just that some of her songs are still available, albeit not easily.

I had picked out this song from my collection a few days ago, after an email query from Atul ji, requesting to pull out an un-posted Suraiya song if possible.  The film is ‘Trolley Driver’ from 1958, on the last films that Suraiya appeared in.  Her only significant releases after this are ‘Shama’ in 1961 and ‘Rustom Sohrab’ in 1963.

The film is directed by Gajanan Jagirdar for Divya Jyot Productions, Bombay. The list of actors includes Suraiya, Rehman, Usha Kiran, Jagirdar, Kammo, Madan Puri, Bhagwan, Protima Devi, Ghosh, Sohan, Kukku, Madan Pushkarna, and Ramlal etc.  Geet Kosh lists seven songs for this film.  The music by the duo of Husnlal Bhagaram. Five of the seven songs are from the pen of Saarshaar Sailaani, two are by Asad Bhopali.  This song is written by Saarshaar Sailaani.

What a gem of a song this one is.  The voice of Suraiya sounds so young and fresh.

morey mann ki baat haaye kahi na jaat
katey kaise raat haaye raat

Oh how will this night pass
I am not able to reveal
The secrets of my heart

What fabulous words, what an attractive composition, and what an alluring rendition.  Just listen.  And wonder.

Song – Morey Mann Ki Baat Haaye Kahi Na Jaat (Trolley Driver) (1958) Singer – Suraiya, Lyrics – Saarshaar Sailaani, MD – Husnlal Bhagatram

Lyrics

morey mann ki baat
haaye kahi na jaat
morey mann ki baat
haaye kahi na jaat
katey kaise raat haaye raat
katey kaise raat haaye raat
morey mann ki baat
haaye kahi na jaat
morey mann ki baat
haaye kahi na jaat
katey kaise raat haaye raat
katey kaise raat haaye raat

mila aisa surgeon main kya kahoon
mila aisa surgeon main kya kahoon
kahoon dard isey
ke dawaa kahoon
kahoon dard isey
ke dawaa kahoon
dawaa kahoon
kaun kahey ye baat hai jeet ke maat
kaun kahey ye baat hai jeet ke maat
katey kaise raat haaye raat
katey kaise raat haaye raat
morey mann ki baat
haaye kahi na jaat
morey mann ki baat
haaye kahi na jaat
katey kaise raat haaye raat
katey kaise raat haaye raat

mere dil mein koi samaa gaya. . .
aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa aaa

aaa aaa aaa
meri dhadkanon ko jagaa gaya
meri dhadkanon ko jagaa gaya
jagaa gaya
hatey dil se haath
nahin bas ki baat
hatey dil se haath
nahin bas ki baat
morey mann ki baat
haaye kahi na jaat
morey mann ki baat
haaye kahi na jaat
katey kaise raat haaye raat
katey kaise raat haaye raat

I went to sleep yesterday with the regret that we could not honour Suraiyya and Sajjad Hussain on the occasion of their birth anniversaries. I woke up today to find this delightful “new” Suraiyya song.

It is one of the few missing Suraiyya songs that was not available online. Our Sudhir Ji the one magician who can make lost songs reappear. It is a great Suraiyya birthday present from Sudhir Ji to the music fraternity. Thanks a lot. Listening to this song made my morning.

Sudhir Ji,
This song brought some goosebumps in my body, as a parody of the song was created and sung by my late father, to tease my mother, who also is no more with us.
Many many thanks for the upload, as this memory will now remain etched in my life.

Sudhir ji,
Such a lovely song should not remain in oblivion.
Thanks for finding a lost gem of Suraiya.

First time hearing this delightful and melodious song since watching the movie in 1960. Thanks for finding this lost gem as only Suraiya could have sung it.
