Today (11 october 2015) is the 73rd birth anniversary of Amitabh Bachchan (11 october 1942). From his date of birth, it can be seen that he was born a few months after the Quit India movement. Inspired by that movement, he was initially named “Inquibaab”. He was later renamed Amitabh on the suggestion of Hindi poet Sumitranandan Pant who was a close friend of Amitabh’s father, poet Hariwanshrai Bachchan.
On the occasion of Amitabh Bachchan’s birth anniversary, here is a song from his earlier struggling days. This song is from “Raaste Ka Paththar”(1972). “Raaste Ka Paththar”(1972) was produced by Bolu Khosla and Lekhraj Khosla and directed by Mukul Dutt for Khosla Enterprises. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Laxmi Chhaya,Neeta Khayani(Introducing), Asit Sen, Satyendra Kappoo, Prem Chopra, Kishan Mehta, Bhagwan Dada, Trilok Kapoor, Shah Agha, Asrani, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Polson, Viju Khote, Suresh Bedi, Shivraj, Ashoo, Nikita, Sabeena etc in it with special appearances by Chand Usmani, Sanjana and Sudhir.
This song is a duet that is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mukesh. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
This is a song that I had never heard before. It is picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and a lady I had not heard of. She is called Neeta Khayani who was making her debut in Hindi movies with this movie.

Harivanshrai Bachchan used ‘Bachchan’ as his non de plume the day he started writing poems. However, he was officially known as ‘Harivanshrai’ or Mr. Rai. He had already discarded his surname ‘Srivastava’ as the surname was identified with a particular caste (Kayasth) and he did not believe in caste system.
The name ‘Bachchan’ originated from ‘Bachcha’ by which name Harivansh was lovingly called by his mother. ‘Bachchan’ was offcially used for the first time not by Harivanshrai but for Amitabh when he was registered as ‘Amitabh Bachchan’ for admission in St. Mary’s Convent at the age of 4 (1946). It was only in 1952, Harivanshrai officially used ‘Bachchan’ when he registered for his Ph.D thesis on Irish poet Yeats in Cambridge.

As is well-known, Dr. Harivansh Rai ‘Bachchan’ was a Professor in English Department of Allahabad University, which was a premier educational institution at that time and continued its exalted status till the decades of 60s/70s.
His extremely candid and very detailed (running into 4 volumes) autobiography written in Hindi is regarded as a literary masterpiece and among the best autobiographies ever written.
He was often asked whether his penname (upnaam in Hindi or takhallus in Urdu), ‘Bachchan’ was derived from Bacchus, especially since his most famous creation “Madhushala”, inspired from or loosely based on (But not translation of) Omar Khayyam’s “Rubaiyaat”, was devoted to the pleasures of drinking (madhu or mai – wine), madhubala (saqi or serving bar-maid), and, madhushala (maikhana or wine parlour). Actually, it is a brilliantly conjured allegory of life. Harivansh Rai Bachchan, however, was a tee-totaller and did not imbibe alcohol.
The famous urdu poet (Shaair) Raghupat Sahay ‘Firaq Gorakhpuri’ was also his colleague (but senior) in English Department. Both the maestro craftsmen were active in their chosen domains other than the English language that they were teaching, viz., Urdu & Hindi.

I think, Hariwanshrai ji’s name was Hariwanshrai Shrivastav “Bachhan”.
He was referred to as Hariwanshrai Bachhan after Amitabh became famous. If anyone knows otherwise,please enlighten.

Harivanshrai Shrivastava changed his surname to Bachchan in 1930s itself as he has mentioned in his autobiography. “Madhushala”, that made him immortal in Hindi literature was released in 1935 and he was already known as Hariwanshrai Bachchan by that time.
