I think that I have got an unique song this time. This is a song from a film called Meri Asha-50. The song is sung by film comedian Agha aka Aghajaan Baig. I have never known that Agha had sung any song. Never came across any of his songs, nor read it in HFGK about his song, in his long career of almost 50+ years.

That way, 1950 was also not a period when the lead actors had to sing their own songs, because there was a plethora of male playback singers. Then why did Agha sing this song ? It is a mystery. Agha was never trained in music ( or anything else for that matter ! ). I would have ignored the song credits as a wrong entry, but for the fact that this song is uploaded by shri Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji, the famous collector of songs and a music historian. If he says it is sung by Agha, then it must be Agha. Additionally, the voice in the song is that of Agha unmistakably. He has done a wonderful job of singing this song.

Agha (21-3-1914 to 30-4-1992) was of Persian descent. He was born in Poona. He was known for comic roles and modeled himself on Bob Hope’s style of acting. He appeared in over 300 Hindi films in his career between 1935 and 1986. His son, Jalal Agha, also became an actor, most known for the song, Mehbooba Mehbooba from the film Sholey-75.

Agha confessed that he went to school for just three days, “that was as long as I could stand it”. He spent time “mooching” around Poona Race course, as he wanted to become a jockey and loved horses. Later in life Agha owned two Race Horses and was seen on Bombay and Poona Racecourses very often.

Agha came to Bombay and joined his neighbourhood drama group. Writer Sanjit Narwekar,in his famous book,”Eena Meena Deeka”syas,” Aghajaan Baig or Agha was a fun loving practical joker, who finally gravitated towards Cinema.Legend has it that he saw Prithviraj kapoor and Mubarak exchanging swear words at each others while shooting for a silent film at the Jyoti studio-as was the practice between friends during the silent era.At first he was shocked but soon realised that anyway nothing would be heard in the film as it was a silent film. He himself was a fluent user of swear words and this trait attracted him towards films. The story is probably apocryphal, but the fact remains that he began doing small roles in films.” His interest in acting took him to films where in 1933 he started as a production manager in Kanwal Movietone.

Agha’s first film was Kanwal Movietone’s Stree Dharma also called Painted Sin (1935) starring Mehtab and Nazir. However, his films Karwan-e-Husn (1935), Wadia’s Rangila Mazdoor (1938), and Anuradha (1940) helped him gain recognition as a comic actor. He acted in Kikubhai Desai’s (Manmohan Desai’s father) Circus Ki Sundari (1941) which was popular and this helped in getting lead roles in films like Muqabala (1942), Laheri Cameraman (1944) and Taxi Driver (1944). His most active years were from 1930s to 1960s.

He was the Hero in Bombay Talkies film Jwar Bhata-44,in which Dilip Kumar made a debut. Dilip was the secondary Hero. This fact Agha used to always tell. later on of course the picture reversed and Agha became a tailpiece to Dilip in his films.

Agha’s had 3 daughters and one son-Jalal Agha. His wife’s name was Masuma.

Agha died on 30 April 1992 of a heart attack in Pune, Maharashtra, India. He was 78 years old. He was survived by three daughters and one son, Jalal Agha.

Jalal Agha died on 5 March 1995, in New Delhi, also of a heart attack.

Agha was only once nominated for Filmfare Best supporting actor’s award for Ghunghat-60.

The film Meri Asha-50 is an obscure movie. 1949.50,51,52,53 etc years had so many interesting musical films with everlasting music. Among these popular songs, the film must have been lost somewhere. I have not seen this film. It was a film made by Aalam Art productions and directed by Dr. Aalam. Music was by K. Narayan Rao. There is no mention of any lyricist. 6 songs are listed in HFGK.

Neither this Dr.Aalam, nor this K.Narayan Rao are names are known names. They are also obscure names. No information is available about Dr. Aalam. Atleast Narayan Rao is known to be a composer of C grade action/stunt films. No book or Encyclopedia gives information about their Bio data. All the information is available only via the HFGK only.

The first film of K Narayan Rao seems to be Madari Mohan-40, where he joined hands with another composer Prof. B R Deodhar. In 1943 he gave music to Pistolwali, Khazanchi Ka beta, Khooni Laash and Duniya Deewani. In 44, it was Lehri Cameraman and Qatil. In 46,he gave music to Royal mail, Khooi, Reporter, Maaf Kijiyega and Dhokebaaz. In 47-Extra Girl, Chabuk sawar and Sher E Bangal. In 48-Bahadur Naresh, Jungle Goddess, and white Face. 1949-Jagriti, Nakli Baap, Chunnu Munnu and Billi. 1950- Meri Asha and Meherbani. Then in 1959 came his last film with Lacchhiram- Hazar Pariyan. Thus he gave music to 25 films, but not even one film was a Hit, nor was any of his song famous.

With today’s song film Meri Asha-50 is making its Debut on the Blog. The Lyrics of this song seem to be interesting. It is a take on the song “Jab tumhi chale pardes” (Rattan)(1944). The song has a name Mohan Tara in the Mukhada. A singer of the same name was very much active during this period- Mohantara Talpade/Ajinkya. In the film Patanga-49, her famous song “Pehle to ho gayee namaste namaste” had become very popular. Her name is used in this song. May be ,the Heroine’s name in film “Meri Asha” was Mohantara…..

Song-Jab tum hi chali England (Meri Asha)(1950) Singer-Agha, MD-K Narayan Rao

Lyrics

jab tum hi chali England
bajaa kar band
jab tum hi chali England
bajaa kar band
o mohan taara
bambai mein kaun hamaara
hoy bambai mein kaun hamaara
jab tum hi chali England
bajaa kar band
o mohan taara
bambai mein kaun hamaara
hoy bambai mein kaun hamaara

jab yaad tumhaari aayegi
jab yaad tumhaari aayegi
baazaaron mein le jaayegi
baazaaron mein le jaayegi
sadkon pe ye gaayega dard o maara
bambai mein kaun hamaara
sadkon pe ye gaayega dard o maara
bambai mein kaun hamaara
hoy bambai mein kaun hamaara

jab tum hi chali England
bajaa kar band
o mohan taara
bambai mein kaun hamaara

jab laut ke waapis aaogi ee ee
jab laut ke waapis aaogi
kis kaam ki tum reh jaaogi
kis kaam ki tum reh jaaogi
reh jaayega ye lut ke joban saara
bambai mein kaun hamaara
reh jaayega ye lut ke joban saara
bambai mein kaun hamaara
hoy bambai mein kaun hamaara
jab tum hi chali England
bajaa kar band
o mohan taara
bambai mein kaun hamaara
hoy bambai mein kaun hamaara aa aa

umeshsontakke ji,

Thanks for your good words.
That this song is a parody of a song from Rattan-44 is already mentioned in the write up-last para.

Yes, Agha’s parody from MUQABLA (1942), “Utth jaa bijali pyaari utth jaa,” is a great one. It is a medley, parodying multiple songs including “So jaa raaj kumaari so jaa” from ZINDAGI (1940), the non-film record “Deewaana banaana hai to deewaana banaa de” by Begum Akhtar, “Pahle jo muhabbat se inkaar kiya hota” from PARDESI (1941), “Lag gayi chot karejwa mein haaye raama” from YAHUDI KI LADKI (1933), and at least one or two other songs that I cannot recognize at this time.
