For music lovers of radio era, wednesday night used to be the most important night of the week. 🙂 It was on wednesday nights that all music lovers would tune to Radio Ceylon (later Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) from 8 P M to 9 P M. Listening to the magical voice of Amin Sayani telling us about the songs in the various “paaydaan” used to be a divine experience. It was not a good idea for visitors to arrive at the households of music lovers at those hours on wednesdays. 🙂
Presentation in the voice of Amin Sayani was the major reason for the success of the programme. The songs figuring in the programme figures in the morning Farmaishi programme as well, but listening to the same songs in Binaca geetmala with comments by Amin Sayani used to be an altogether different experience.
Weekly programmes of Binaca geetmala would present the songs that were popular at that time. The songs would be assigned points based on the standing in these programmes. The 32 songs that earned the most points during the year would be played in the final two wednesdays of the year in the ascending order of the points earned by the songs.
The methodology followed for judging the weekly popularity of the song as well as judging its yearly popularity had its flaws, but few people bothered about that (may be the music creators did). One flaw was that a song could play only for 25 weeks after which it was “retired”- which meant that it was no longer eligible to appear in the programme. Secondly, songs that got released towards the later half of the year suffered because they could only play for about 12 or 13 weeks in that year as well as in the next year and as a result they failed to reach high positions in both the years. “Don”(1978) song “Khail Ke Paan Banaraswaala”, despite being the most popular song of the year failed to achieve this distinction in 1978 as well as 1979 and only won a “honourable mention” in 1979 Binaca Geetmala final.
With passage of time, it is interesting to find that the most popular songs of Binaca geetlmala those days are no longer the most popular songs of those years now.
It is a wednesday night at present. Here is a song from “Josheela”(1973) on the occasion. This song failed to make it to the final two weeks of the Binaca Geetmala 1973, but only just. This song is sung by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and chorus. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.
The song is picturised on Dev Anand and Hema Malini.
Several songs of this movie were inspired by Nepali folk tunes, including this song. I have not been able to note down the lyrics of chorus which are in Nepali. I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us what the lyrics are.
