Friends, we are on the grandstand day today, now slowly moving towards the coveted 10K target which will be reached later in the day today. In the interim past few days, the pace has somewhat been slow, since Atul ji himself has been traveling on work for some of the days in the past two weeks. In fact he is in travel even today, and his posts are now coming from Nagpur.
There is a set of 10K series songs still lined up to be posted. Outside of that we have some more songs to be posted today to reach the 10K mark. I am gathering some special songs for the day, for this purpose. Here is the first song of this extra set today.
All of us are familiar with the singer S Balbir. In a career that lasted from mid 1940s to early 1980s, his voice is heard many songs and especially in qawwaalis, group songs and many duets. Balbir was born in 1926 in Amritsar. With a good sense of music, and good singing voice, the filmi bug bit him. At the young age of 20, he made his way to Bombay with the desire to become a singer in films. With no familiarity, it would be two years before he would get a break. In 1948, he recorded some songs for the film ‘Deewan ji’ for music director S Bannerjee. However, this film could get released only in 1950. Before that, in 1949, the film ‘Karvat’ was released in which he has sung under the music direction of Hans Raj Behl. Also released in 1949 is the film ‘Khush Raho’ in which his voice is heard in the music direction of SD Batish.
In the next 3 decades, he has sung songs for almost 120 films. Interestingly, this was a career that very soon got relegated to singing as part of duets or larger group of singers. In his entire career he may have sung maybe about a dozen or 15 solo songs. In that sense, the solos of Balbir are kind of a rarity. With that in mind, I searched through our blog, only to find that we have 22 songs posted thus far in which Balbir’s voice is heard. And not surprisingly, there is not a single solo song by him posted so far.
In this post, I present the first solo of Balbir to be posted here. The film is ‘Mumtaz Mahal’ from 1957. Produced by Nigam Films, it is directed by Ram Daryaani. The cast of actors includes Sheila Ramani, Jairaj, Agha, Veena, GM Durrani, Heera Sawant, Umesh, Samson, Uma Dutt, Nazir Kashmiri and Minnie etc. The seven songs of this film are written by Hasrat Jaipuri, Kaif Irfani and Pt Priyadarshi. This song is from the pen of Kaif Irfani. The music is by Vinod.
So as the first of this set of special songs for today, here is the first solo by Balbir, to be showcased here. With music by Vinod, the composition has to be interesting and attractive.
Listen and enjoy.
Song-Mere dil jhoom zara (Mumtaz Mahal)(1957) Singer-Balbir, Lyrics-Kaif Irfani, MD-Vinod

machal machal ke kali bhanwre ko bulaati hai
hawaa nazaaron ko hans kar galey lagaati hai
hawaa nazaaron ko hans kar galey lagaati aur gaati hai
gaati hai haaan aan
bulbul pe aaj huaa maali fidaa aa
maali fidaa aa

mere dil jhoom zaraa
jhoom zaraa
jhoom zaraa
mere dil jhoom
mere dil jhoom
nashe mein choor ye baadal falak pe dol rahe
koyal ke dil mein mohabbat ka rang ghol rahe
koyal ke dil mein mohabbat ka rang ghol rahe
ghol rahe
ghol rahe haaan
papihaa kahe le lo meri duaa aa
meri duaa aa
meri duaa
mere dil jhoom zaraa
jhoom zaraa
jhoom zaraa
mere dil jhoom
mere dil jhoom

Nice, breezy song. As usual (this is becoming one of my standard lines here), I am hearing this for the first time. 🙂 Thanks, Sudhirji, for this blog-solo debut of Balbir.
