STREET SINGER (1938) is regarded as one of the three tops films of K L Saigal produced under the banner of New Theaters. If ‘Devdas’ (1935) confirmed the arrival of K L Saigal as an actor-singer, ‘Street Singer’ (1938) and ‘Zindagi’ (1940) made him the first star actor-singer of the Hindi film industry. People used to watch his films more for his songs than for the film itself. The flip side of Saigal’s popularity as a singer was that his songs virtually eclipsed the songs sung by other singers in his films.

‘Street Singer’ (1938) as the name suggests was a musical film in which New Theatre’s two top most singers-actors , K L Saigal and Kanan Devi paired as lead actors probably for the first time. The film had 13 songs of which 7 songs were sung by K L Saigal ( 5 duets with Kanan Devi). This blog has so far covered 8 songs from this film – 2 K L Saigal solos, 5 K L Saigal-Kanan Devi duets and 1 Kanan Devi solo.

I was interested in knowing as to which other singers have sung the remaining 5 songs of the film. To my utter surprise, I came across a duet song ‘lo khaa lo madam khaanaa’ picturised on none other than Khemchand Prakash, the music director and an unidentified female actor ( at least for me). The singers are not credited but the male singer in the song may be Khemchand Prakash. After all, being a singer in Bikaner and later Nepal royal courts, I will not be surprised, if R C Boral, the music director of the film may have got him to sing the song. I would request the knowledgeable readers of the blog to identify the playback singers of this song. The song is a farcical one, written by Arzoo Lucknowi in keeping with the situation of the song which is a part of the stage show in the film. It is very rare to find in other Hindi film songs, some of the words he used in this song such as ’muye’ (wretch) ‘chandool’ (fool), ‘ul zool’? (disobedient), ‘naamaakool’ (crazy) etc.

I had read that after leaving the court of Maharaja of Nepal some time in mid 30s, Khemchand Prakash assisted music director Timir Baran in ‘Devdas’ (1935). It is speculated that Khemchand Prakash helped Timir Baran in composing two songs of this film – balaam aaye baso mero man mein and dukh ke ab din beetat naahin. But I was not aware that he acted in Hindi films. As per IMDb, Khemchand Prakash acted in one more film ‘Kapal Kundla’ (1939) in addition to ‘Street Singer’ (1938). He left Calcutta (Kolkatta) for Bombay in 1939.

Khemchand Prakash was trained in Hindustani classical singing in Dhrupad (the oldest genre of Hindustani classical music) and Kathak dance by his father Govardhan Prasad. One can notice his dance in Kathak style in the video clip of the song under discussion at 2:30.

So far, I had seen only one most common photo of Khemchand Prakash on many audio clips the songs composed by him. This is the first time, I could see a relatively younger Khemchand Prakash (30 years) through this video clipping.

Singer could be Kanan Devi as all the other songs were sung by her. Or is it Rekha
