This is the 8th song in the series ” VINTAGE KISHORE “. It is from the film Maalkin-1953 and it is sung by Kishore Kumar, Rafi and Ram Kamlani.

Recently, while discussing a song from Ek Nazar (1951), we have discussed the comedian Gope. Ram Kamlani was his youngest brother. They were 9 siblings and Ram Kamlani was the last one. He was born on 20-10-1919. Though Gope started his acting career in 1933 and concentrated only on acting, Ram Kamlani dabbled in Acting, Direction, Production and Playback singing too. He entered the film line in late 40s.

As an actor he acted in films like Ajeet, Inaam, Kaajal, Do Raaha and Joi Bangla Desh. As a Singer he sang in many films. Starting with Doosri Shaadi-47, he sang in Ghar ki Izzat, Rangeen zamaana, Kaajal, Refugee, Pyar ki jeet, Maa ka pyar, Naao, Raakhi, Bahurani, Khamosh Sipahi, Meena Bazar, Malkin, Chaalbaaz, Laal Dupatta etc.

He mostly sang for his brother Gope. His songs were generally duets. These were mainly comedy songs and very few were serious ones. His rare solos like,” Bane hai hum to Ghar Jamai'(Ghar ki izzat) and ” Koi samze isse muhabbat”(Meena Bazaar) became popular.

When Gope established Gope Productions, he produced some films and directed some of them like, Muskurahat, Biradari, Bezuban, Khamosh Sipahi, Malkin etc.

Ram Kamlani died in 1983 in Bombay.

Film Maalkin was produced by Gope productions and the producer was Ram Kamlani, director was O.P.Dutta and the Music Director was Roshan. There were eight songs in the film -4 duets of Kishore, 3 lata Solos and 1 Talat solo. Four songs from this film are already posted on this Blog. 2 Comedy songs of Kishor, 1 with Mukesh and Ram kamlani and 1 with Rafi and Ram Kamlani are yet to be posted. Today we will enjoy one of these songs.

The cast of Maalkin was Nutan, Sajjan, Pran, Raj Mehra, Gope, Yaqub, Poornima and Durga Khote.

The story of Maalkin was, surprisingly, about the redevelopment of an old building. The city of Bombay, 60 years ago also was facing acute shortage of space and many old and dilapidated buildings of British era were demolished and rebuilt into multistoreyed Towers. The cost of accomodation was, even in those days extremely high by the standards of those days.

This is the story of a Chawl , its owner and her relations with her tenents. The 3 storeyed “Ghareeb Niwas” is owned by Durga Khote. She is known only as Maalkin. No one knows her name. The chawl is occupied by lower middle class workers. Each small room accommodated a family or a group of 4-5 persons. They shared common space, common gallery and common Toilets-one on each floor. Despite all this people are living there happily. There is bonhomie among the residents. People share joys and sorrows of each other. The maalkin treats all tenants like her family. They live like a big family. Maalkin lives there with her only daughter Manju (Nutan).

Maalkin treats tenants like her children but Manju is a child of new generation. She had different thinking. She always dreams of big bungalows, jewellery, Money, cars, fine clothes and other luxuries of life. One day a travelling salesman of a shoe company-Sharad (Sajjan) arrives. He likes the place so much that he stays there only. He and manju fall in love. Sharad also thinks like Maalkin and is happy living in this chawl with other workers and sharing things with them. Manju, however differs in thinking and several times discusses her dreams with Sharad. She wanted a luxurious life.

One day the Maalkin proceeds to Kashi Yatra, but before departing, she transfers the Chawl on Manju’s name. Once she is gone, knowing Manju’s dreams, Sharad suggests to her that she should sell the chawl to a builder, who will pull down this structure and build a new multistoreyed tower. This way, Manju not only will get lakhs of rupees, but also will be able to live in a big spacious modern flat with all latest amenities, thus fulfilling her wishes.

Soon this news spreads to all the tenants and all are worried about their future. Those who had spent their life here did not know where to go now. They think they would be on the road. There is gloom all over. Manju is quite excited with Sharad’s proposal and she decides in its favour. The fact, however,is that Sharad is that Builder’s son and is staying here just to achieve his goal.

Luckily, the old Maalkin returns in time. When she learns about all this she is very sad. She gives a sermon to Manju and gives her a choice between the demolition of the Chawl or her mother. In addition she joins the tenants in protesting and fasting. Manju’s eyes open up and she realises that Love is more important than all Luxuries put together. Sharad is also repentant and all is well in the end.

Maalkin-53 was Nutan’s 6th film, after her debut with Hamari beti in 1950. This was the second time that she was working with Sajjan. Nutan (4-6-36 to 21-2-91) was an extraordinary actress. She was very talented. In her first few films itself, she had worked in a serious film like Humlog-51. This must have added to her skills in acting.

Sajjan, ( 15-1-1921 to 15-5-2000) who most people remember as a small time villain and character artiste, was a very Handsome actor in his young age. His first film was Mera Suhag-47. In his career he wrote stories(2 films),Dialogues(2 films) and Lyrics. Some of his geets were sung by Talat Mehmood as NFS. some of his films were, Dhanyawad, Humlog, Nirmohi, Toofan, Muqaddar, Sainya, Poonam, Lagan, Sangram, Nazariya, Sheesham, Chalti ka naam gaadi etc.

Thanks to thedu.in,here is a short Biography of Sajjan-

Born on January 15, 1921 in Jaipur, his full name was Sajjan Lal Purohit. BUt he was famous with his first name in I he movie world. Sajjan did his graduation from Jaswarit college, Jodhpur.

He had a desire to be a lawyer but not an actor.

In 1941, he arrived in Calcutta and worked as an apprentice in a laboratory of, East India Company.

His initial breakthrough in films was as an extra ill films like Masoom (1941), Chouranghee (1942). Sajjan left Calcutta during World War II and reached Mumbai. In Mumbai he worked as an assistant to famous director Kidar Sharma. At that time great showirian Raj Kapoor was also worked as an assistant to Kidar Sharma. He also worked as assistant to Gajanan Jagirdar in Vakil Sahib and got Rs. 35 as salary.

A poet by heart, Sajjan showed His talent when he wrote dialogues for Meena (1944) and lyrics for Door Chalen (1946) and Dhanyavad (1948).

Sajjan also acted in small roles in Prithvi Theatte. His acting debut film was Dhanyavad. After that Bombay Theatre’s Muqaddar was released in 1950. The heroine was Nalini Jaywant.

Now Sajjan was well established in film world. In 1950s- 60s Sajjan acted as hero or side-hero in films like, Sainya, Rail Ka Dibba, Bahana, Sheesha, Malkin, Nirmohi, Kasturi, Mehmaan, Lagan, Girl School, paridhaan, 00 Dulhe, Ghar-Ghar Mein Diioali, Haa-Haa-Hee-Hee-Hoo-Hoo, Poonam Jhanjhar, Halla- Gulla. As hero his last film was Kabuliwala and as an artist he last appeared in 1986 release Shatru.

Artist of more than 150 films Sajjan also worked in TV serials. In Vikram-Betaal he played Betaal. His other serial was Lena-Dena.

For Kishore Kumar, his dream of becoming a singer was looking bleak. Instead of singing, he was getting offers to do comic roles in films. It was only Dada Burman who dared to to cast Kishore as the Playback singer for Dev Anand. The first ever song he sang for Dev Anand was ” Mere labon mein chhipe”-Baazi-51. However, not until his song in Munimji-55 ” Jeevan ke safar mein raahi” that he proved he was a singer first and actor next. Out of all 12 songs of Munimji, only this song was the most popular and hummable. In Funtoosh-56,Dada gave him ” Dukhi man mere”.By now Kishore was out of Saigal’s shadow. The song clicked, but not Kishore, because in that period he had heaps of acting offers and there was no time for concentrating on singing. He settled for singing his own songs and those songs for Dev which Dada gave him occasionally.

In our next episode we will see how Kishore developed his career after 1956. Till then, let us enjoy this hilarious comedy song from Maalkin-53. It is written by Rajinder Krishan.
