Sun saahiba sun pyaar ki dhun

Posted on: April 15, 2013

This article is written by Peevesie’s mom, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I am told by my daughter (don’t know how she keeps track of all this in between her tight schedule of finishing her projects etc) that today (15 april 2013) is Hasrat Jaipuri’s birthday. I am sure every one knows a lot about Hasrat Saab’s history, where he was born (Jaipur), his birth name (Iqbal Hussain). How he fell in love with a Hindu girl in his youth – the song “Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padhkar” was written for her (so says Wikipedia) which was later used in “Sangam” by Raj Kapoor.

We also know that Hasrat Jaipuri was discovered by Prithviraj Kapoor at a mushaira and was recommended to Raj Kapoor for “Barsaat”. He was Raj Kapoor’s most preferred lyricist along with Shailendra till 1971.

It seems Raj Kapoor had a song written by Hasrat when he began a movie called “Ajanta”. They also had the song “Sun Sahiba Sun” ready with music by Shankar Jaikishen. God knows what happened the movie was shelved. Then years later when RK was making “Ram Teri Ganga Maili” Raj Kapoor used the song. The song became hugely popular. At this juncture Raj Kapoor sent Hasrat some money even though he had paid him more than 30 years ago in 1952. (All these information is courtesy myswar.com otherwise hum toh anandi hain. Itna sab kahan jante?!!)

So here we are with a song that has been credited to Ravindra Jain in the movie but in reality it’s a Hasrat Jaipuri song which I got to know about today thanks to Peevesie who put me on the job of finding a Hasrat Jaipuri song which is yet to make an appearance in Atuldom. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

LP records for this movie lists Hasrat Jaipuri as the lyricist for this song.

myswar, which u have referenced in ur write-up also lists Hasrat Jaipuri as the lyricist for this song. they are just saying SJ originally composed the song, while Jain gets the credits.

Credits in the movie video also lists Hasrat Jaipuri as one of the lyricists for the movie (@2:46 time frame) and he has no other songs in the movie as per the LP. So, RK films also have given proper credits to Hasrat Jaipuri.

Agreed.

However, the confusion arises from the fact that the official filmfare nominations for 1985 Best Lyricist list “Hasrat Jain” as the lyricist. Not sure if thats the typo or whether they intended to give both of them credits as Hasrat-Jain. Hence, while Hasrat Jaipuri is definitely the lyricist officially, to give Ravindra Jain the credits also as co-lyricist is subjective to interpretation. Hasrat is already on record accusing Jain to steal his songs past RK’s death, for movie Henna.

Above write-up just lists just Ravindra Jain as the lyricist in the tags below the video link and thats not correct.

Atulji/ Sudhirji and the knowledge bank of Atuldom
have we resolved on who to give credit for this song as lyricist?

It was rumoured that just before RK said final Goodbye to S-J ,he had recorded 500 tunes made by them. later one by one he used some of them in his films. The above song tune is also one of those tunes.so,no credit for Ravindra jain, who was in any case a big ‘thief ‘ of lyrics and tunes from others.

Tune of this song is similar to the song “Ich Liebe Dich, I Love You” from Sangam. You are right in saying RK had used a tune from SJ’s earlier compositions.
