Ye hawa ye samaa chaandni hai jawaan

Lata Mangeshkar has sung for almost all the top music directors of the golden era of Hindi film music, the major exception being O P Nayyar. She has sung many popular and melodious songs for music directors like Anil Biswas, Naushad, C Ramchandra, Husnlal-Bhagatram, S D Burman, Roshan, Madan Mohan, Shankar-Jaikishan, Hemant Kumar, Salil Chaudhary etc. But her most talked about collaborations even today are that with C Ramchandra and Madan Mohan. And rightly so as there was something special about her songs under their batons. While her songs with C Ramchandra were mostly reflected the romance with ‘feel good’ factor, with Madan Mohan they were mostly associated with ‘heart felt’ pensive mood genre.
While browsing through songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar for C Ramchandra and Madan Mohan, I found that lyricist Rajendra Krishan had a major share of songs written for these two music directors. C Ramchandra gave music in 111 Hindi films and he used Lata–Rajendra Krishan combination in as many as 32 films. Some of the popular songs of C Ramchandra-Lata Mangeshkar-Rajendra Krishan combination were from films ‘Patanga’ (1949), ‘Samaadhi’ (1950), ‘Albela’ (1951), ‘Anarkali’ (1953), ‘Meenar’ (1954) ‘Azad’ (1955), ‘Amardeep’ (1958) etc. Madan Mohan-Lata Mangeshkar-Rajendra Krishan combinations worked in 31 films out of 93 films for which Madan Mohan composed music. Some of the popular songs from this combination were ‘Ashiyaana’ (1952), ‘Bhai Bhai’ (1956), ‘Pocketmar’ (1956), ‘Gateway of India’ (1957), ‘Adaalat’ (1958), ‘Jailor’ (1958), ‘Manmauji’ (1962), ‘Jahan Ara’ (1964) etc.
Coming back to C Ramchandra-Lata Mangeshkar-Rajendra Krishan collaboration, Lata Mangeshkar first sang under C Ramchandra in the film ‘Shehnaayi’ (1947) as one of three singers in the song ’jawaani ki rail chali jaaye re’. She sang her first solo song under him in the film ‘Namoona’ (1949). Rajendra Krishan’s first film under C Ramchandra was ‘Sipahiya’ (1949) for which he wrote only one song. For nearly a decade, this combination has churned out many popular as well as rare gems of songs. Towards the end of 1958, Lata Mangeshkar almost stopped singing for C Ramchandra thus ending their successful collaboration. With this, C Ramchandra’s musical career went downhill as, in his own admission, he could not get inspiration for creating melodious compositions without her.
I have chosen for discussion, one of the forgotten gems of C Ramchandra-Lata Mangeshkar-Rajendra Krishan combination ‘ye hawa ye shama chaandni hai jawwan’ from the equally forgotten film SHAGOOFA (1953). The film was produced under the banner of P N Films ( Premnath’s home production) and directed by H S Rawail. The star cast included Premnath, Beena Rai, Bipin Gupta, Sundar, Purnima, Yashodara Katju, Baby Naaz etc. The film had 11 songs (including a version song) of which as many as 7 songs were Lata solos which, in my view, are all rare gems. Two songs from this film have already been covered in the blog.
The prelude and interlude music in the song appears to be based on Goan folk music. This song is very melodious and one of the finest examples of a perfect chemistry between the singer, the composer and the writer. The longing for the beloved is best expressed in a couple of lines in the song :
tum na aatey agar mere achche sanam
rooth jaatey zamaane ki mehfil se hum
This melodious song got lost from the popularity radar as the film failed miserably at the box office. After about 15 years, Shanker-Jaikishan used the mukhda tune of this song in composing ‘mil gaye mil gaye aaj mere sanam’ for the film ‘Kanyadaan’ 1968) which became very popular.
Song-Ye hawa ye sama chaandni hai jawaan (Shagoofa)(1953) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-C Ramchandra
Lyrics
ye hawa ye samaa
chaandni hai jawaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
mere dard-e-jigar hai ye tera asar
baat muddat ke unse mili hai nazar
mere dard-e-jigar hai ye tera asar
baat muddat ke unse mili hai nazar
mere dil se uthha aahon ka dhuaan
mere dil se uthha aahon ka dhuaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
ye hawa ye sama chaandni hai jawaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
tere aane se dil ki kali khil gayi
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
tere aane se dil ki kali khil gayi
zindagi ki kasam zindagi mil gayi
zindagi ki kasam zindagi mil gayi
hai nayi ye zameen hai naya aasmaan
hai nayi ye zameen hai naya aasmaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
ye hawa ye sama chaandni hai jawaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
tum na aatey agar mere achche sanam
rooth jaatey zamaane ki mehfil se hum
tum na aatey agar mere achche sanam
rooth jaatey zamaane ki mehfil se hum
dhoondhte tum agar milta na nishaan
dhoondhte tum agar milta na nishaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
ye hawa ye sama chaandni hai jawaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan
tumhe laayi meri fariyaad yahaan

It was those audio cassette days and C Ramchandra to me meant Albela, Anarkali, Amardeep, Sargam, etc only. But then as years passed by, the numerous melodious songs of Lata for CR unfolded before me. What a great treasure indeed.
Thanks for the post.

Kamath ji,
Thanks for posting this wonderful and melodious song.
C.Ramchandra is my weakness. Actually I hope to present few CR songs of the 50s,shortly,with detailed commentary on various aspects of the singer, composer and the Lyricists.
As usual, you have done your home work before writing and so it is not only informative, statistical, but also highly readable. Thanks.
There is just one correction.
There were only 10 songs in Shagoofa-53. At many sites the songs
1.Dil kabhi apna tha lekin… Sunder/Geeta and
2.Maine lakhon ke bol…sunder/Geeta
are shown as 2 different songs, when in fact it is the same ONE song.
I am not aware of any version song in this film, nor is it mentioned in HFGK.
One song from these 10- Arey jaalim jamaane-lata solo was removed from the film later. So in effect there were only 9 songs in Shagoofa.

Dear Arun,
I am not clear about the song No.9 ‘dil ye kahata tha (Lata) in your comment. Is it the same song as the one posted today?
Today’s posted song is ‘ye hawa ye sama chaandni hai jawaan’ (Lata).
And where does the song ‘chheen sake to chheen le’ (Lata) fit in? Is it the same one as the deleted song ‘arey zaalim zamaane’ which you mentioned?
If your answers are ‘yes’ to my queries, then a total of 9 songs as stated by you is correct.
