I am delighted to find this song from Humaayun (1945), suggested by Kamath Sir. This is exactly the type of desert songs that I love. Since I have seen very few movies from the 40s, the chance of discovering such songs is very remote.
Unless one stumble upon it on youtube, which is again like finding a needle in a haystack. So I am grateful to Kamath Sir, for the suggestion. So here is ‘Desert’ song no. 2.
For a song of 1945 the print is very clear and the audio too is very clean. This ghazal is written by Vikar Ambalvi and composed by Ghulam Haider. The movie starred Nargis, Ashok Kumar, Veena, Chandramohan etc. This song is playing in the background as Nargis is embarking on a journey in a desert with a kaafila on Camel back. The song begins with shadows of the desert ships at their longest in the rising sun and ends with the silhouette of the same in the setting sun. Clearly the song is picturized on outdoor location. Ashok Kumar appears to be in the title role of Humaayun, and is watching the caravan leave from the palace. Never given to histrionics, at the best of times, he is maintaining royal demeanor.
There are two singers one male and one female singing this whole song in tandem. We have the female singers name as Shamshad Begum , but male singer’s name is missing, even in myswar.com. I can guess that it is Ghulam Haider himself. In fact in the song list of myswar.com singer’s name is absent for some other songs also. Out of nine songs listed, three are already posted. I have the name of only two singers, Shamshad Begum and Rajkumari among these nine songs. May be the titles of the film are mentioning some male singers which will give a clue to the male singers name.
I know Ashok Kumar was a big star in the 40’s and thought Nargis came into prominance only with Barsaat (1950). Nargis must have been a teenager while working in this film, but is looking mature in the royal gear. This must be one of the first major films done by her.
