Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Jeewan ek adhoora sapna

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

In 1968, when HMV brought out an LP of CH Atma’s non film songs, the disc was titled as ‘Lingering Melodies’. Such an appropriate epithet and such a fitting description of the quality of this voice – ‘lingering’. The baritone sounds rendered by this wonderful singer, assuredly have this lingering quality. The sound and the words stay with the listener, as if still around, as if still playing somewhere, even after the song is complete. That is the kind of effect this voice has on the listener.

In the early 90s, HMV released another wonderful collection of songs by this singer. This is a two volume set titled ‘Preetam Aan Milo’ – the title being taken from another iconic non film song sung by him. Presenting a thoughtful and philosophical non film song from this collection. The original, as far as I can surmise, is from a 78rpm record released sometimes in the 1960s. The words reflect an acceptance of the facts of life – facts that we are all aware of but mostly tend to lose sight of, in the rush of managing the day to day process of living.

The words of this song are by KL Pardesi, and the music composition is by Kersi Mistry. Regular readers will recall that Kersi Mistry is the son of Pherozshah M Mistry, the music director of the very first Hindi talkie film ‘Aalam Ara’ (1931).

Listen to the soft rendering, and you will be able to appreciate the epithet – lingering melody. Enjoy.

jeevan ek adhoora sapna
kuchh dekha kuchh baaki hai
dukh se sukh ka rishta naata
kuchh dekha kuchh baaki hai

This life, is but a dream
Always unfinished, always ongoing
Part seen, and known
Part yet to be
The inextricable link
Of happiness and sorrows
Part experienced
Part yet to be

ik aasha ka jalta bujhtaa deepak le kar saath chalaa
jeevan ki is ghor andheri raahon mein din raat chalaa
pag pag par kaanton ka deraa
kuchh dekha kuchh baaki hai

Wandering these dark passages of life
Day in and day out
With a tiny lamp of hope
That dims and flares occasionally
Feeling the prickling thorns
At every step of the way
Part experienced
Part yet to be

kaun hai apna kaun paraaya, sab ko jaana pehchaana
kaam na aaye koi yahaan par, ye jag bhi hai begaana
jo thaa so apne bhaag mein likha
kuchh dekha kuchh baaki hai

This journey (of life) is lonely
The world is an unfamiliar stranger
I know the friends
And I know the foes
None is any help or succor
Ah this journey, is so lonely
All that happens
Is already writ in destiny
Part experienced
Part yet to be
